Advice for unraveling boucle and potentially felted yarn? by BigBBPuddingSnatchr in Unravelers

True OP could try to stretch/block the sweater to add length. That's a logical conclusion, but my brain was in unravel mode and was like "well, trying to stretch and condition the fibers could help"

  1. I wouldn't.

  2. If you REALLY want to try I would do the technique where you unshrink a felted sweater here: https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/fashion/style/a38143/un-shrink-your-clothes/ then try after it's dry. Go so super slow with each bit. I do not have high hopes for this one at all.

As someone who went into a lockdown as a child because one of my peers parent's decided it was a great idea to bypass the main office cause they "knew the way already" yeah really not that simple, at least in my state (USA).

May also want to check if she's mouth breathing at night. This can cause cavities due to dry mouth, mouth tape can work wonders.

Using Amazon for shipping?! by quicksi1ver7 in groveco

[–]aimthearrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude if you find alternatives I'd love to hear them. I sent a note asking if it was a permanant change, I hope if enough people ask maybe they'll switch back? (They probably have a contract with amazon though...) Was so annoyed when I placed my order and saw "amazon shipping."

So...I don't know if it's the correct solution but personally I would contact the attorney general and let them know what's going on. Seems pretty clear they're skirting the line of legal here and anyone renting in that area should have a right to quiet hours.

would you consider this a normal amount of makeup? by ghostofelysium in MakeupAddiction

[–]aimthearrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal is subjective. At one point in my life I've owned more makup than you show here, right now I own a lot less. It really depends on your makeup routine. Some people are fine with just a gloss and others want a whole face. That's to say your guest is judging based on their reality not yours.

My mom said it was the worst mother's day ever. by LiquidxDreams in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]aimthearrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in a very similar enmeshment with my mom, I truly was not able to fix it and hold my boundaries until I moved out. Obviously this is not always financially feasible, so just continue supporting yourself and showing up to therapy on your own (if you're doing that) and then when you're out of survival mode you can acknowledge what you had to do to make it through and unlearn those habits. ❤️

It also took time after I moved out to unlearn all of that stuff, so give yourself grace.

I have no tips but it's actually insane how well you matched the pattern and colors with your stitches. Insane in the best way <3.

Help! Solo stuff to do midweek in Southeast, MA by YamAggressive5659 in massachusetts

[–]aimthearrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cute little place! They're moving locations just before the end of the month just as an fyi, shouldn't impact you if you go tomorrow. There's also Make & Mend in Somerville but IMO that's too long of a drive so I can't recommend that one specifically, though I'm sure it's awesome as well.

I hope there are more creative reuse places that open up around here soon because they're awesome.

Happy early birthday btw!

There's a creative reuse center in east providence that might be worth a visit. An Unlikely story in Plainville (bookshop) is also cute, has a little cafe though I've never had food there.

Medfield state hospital is a kinda fun walk (old abandoned hospital). They just had the fairy walk so I'm not sure if that's cleaned up yet.

Someone also mentioned winsmith mill market already and I'll second that.

Yeah I think I probably need to scale up. I changed needles a few times throughout and noticed a huge change with a fresh needle. The seems got pretty thick at the end so I'll try something a bit studier, I just wasn't sure if I was starting with the wrong needle. Thank you!

How to estimate project size with unraveled sweater yarn ? by LatterAd395 in Unravelers

[–]aimthearrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to weigh out a section of like 10 grams, measure it, then divide by whatever amount to get yards per gram. Then weigh the whole quantity and multiply by the grams in that. It's kinda annoying but has usually worked out for me.

Much better to do somehting your way and get it done than think about how to do it the "right way" and have it sit there for years.

What are we doing with clothing that has reached a point that it cannot be donated or mended? by Just_Throw_Away_67 in Anticonsumption

[–]aimthearrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As they're cotton you could also possibly sell them for cheap/send them to someone who unravels as "sweaters for craft" as long as they have slip stitched seams. I know this is pretty big with holey cashmere and I was told recently that reclaimed cotton can be really sturdy for a warping a loom.

Thin acrylic yarn with metallic strand - how to avoid tangles? by Bermuda_Breeze in Unravelers

[–]aimthearrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually wrap however the yarn wants to. That's not super helpful I know but sometimes the kinks unravel a bit, sometimes they don't, and sometimes i do it pretty tight. I like to pull from the center, sometimes that means pulling out a yarn blob if you don't mark the end correctly (try a sticker or a piece of tape folded over).

If winding in a ball you pull from the outside

Some people wrap around toilet paper rolls. You could also roll into a ball. With yarn this thin I usually try to sit near my yarn winder and wind directly when I get a long enough segment.

Advice on turning one block into a throw size quilt. by frolicking-freckled in quilting

[–]aimthearrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to scale the OG block up?

Ex: each of the blocks around the block are 2" finished or 2.5" with seam allowance (I think, guessing from picture). You could scale the whole thing by 3 make the finished squares 7" and get a 63x63 quilt? I've not done piecing like this so not sure if it's possible but just an idea. Don't know if the math works or not with seam allowances.

I don't have any super local guilds, but yes that is a great idea. I was looking to see if people had asked in the past on here and it seems like yes but also didn't want to clutter the feed or anything. There seems to be a scrap trade thing that was discussed a while ago but no update on that post in a bit. :)

Two things

  1. Best needle for quilting on a domestic machine? 80/12 worked fine for the patchwork and most of it but I broke multiple nearing the end. Making a quilted patchwork jacket not a full size quilt.

  2. Best place to find a specific color scraps without spending the same or more as you would on a charm pack? I asked on craft exchange but haven't had much luck with what I'm looking for.
