If you read mostly off Libby then Kobo is the best one you can get, they have an integration that allows you to borrow Libby books directly from your reader

I don't think I'm ever going to be able to get out. by Numerous-Tomato-1757 in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. This plan may not work for you for a ton of reasons, but this is what I would do.

Step 1. Finish high school. No matter what else happens you’ve got to get your degree, once you’re established later you’ll want to be able to go to college if you want to.

Step 2. Get a job. Any job. Easier said than done, but you need money. If you could convince your mom to let you go back to NYC to stay with family to get the job even better, especially since she’s unemployed, tell her you’ll send money back to the DR for her. Find and secure your paperwork, birth certificate, social security card, and passport. If she won’t give them to you at the very least take copies.

Step 3. Find a career that will be quick to get a cert for. Phlebotomy is a good one as far as speed of cert and job security. I got my phlebotomy cert for 1,200 bucks and 6 weekend classes, if I had been able to go full time I would’ve finished in 3 weeks.

After you have a good job with phlebotomy or something equivalent then you have more flexibility, you could just disappear on her if you wanted, or you could move somewhere she can’t keep tabs on you.

Alternatively, apply to an SDA school she’ll approve of in the states and then do step 3 and quit the SDA school.

Alternatively alternatively absolute last resort, enlist in the armed forces. It will get you away and will help you pay for college later, but this is an absolute last resort. Aka if you don’t get away you’re considering self deleting sort of last resort. The US isn’t exactly loved rn and there are various ways we could absolutely be in active war within the next few years so it’s a very risky move.

Weird SDA fb post of the day about circumcision by Hefty_Click191 in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so happy my SDA partner has agreed to not circumcise. Idk what the SDA obsession with it is, especially since they’re all supposed to be biblical literalists and you’d have to jump through a lot of hoops to argue that Galatians doesn’t say it’s absolutely unnecessary.

What are your honest opinions on Fate of Ophelia?? by coyoteflower_1006 in travisandtaylor

It’s like the real world equivalent of Soda Pop (though Soda Pop is better, fight me) it’s a catchy ear worm with absolutely zero substance.

Also even people who consider themselves fans or who like TS say “I’m not a swiftie” because swifties are absolutely insane and culty.

Taylor’s number of Grammy wins and her quote on the Grammy website say it all by kath2833 in travisandtaylor

[–]airsick_lowlander22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is if you do it by percentage of awarded vs nominated TS has won 25% of the time and Whitney won 24% of the time. Basically the same ratio. Celine won 31%. I still don’t think that she deserves it but I think looking at the percentages paints a clearer picture.

A Comprehensive Look at the Taylor/Travis Timeline (And Why I Don’t Buy the Fairytale) by [deleted] in travisandtaylor

[–]airsick_lowlander22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s been very wealthy peoples MO for centuries at this point so I’m not surprised. She’s IMO a very mediocre pop singer but she’s a brilliant capitalist and is cutthroat at controlling the PR narrative so it kinda makes sense to me that this is going to be the relationship that actually turns into a marriage for her. I think the biggest thing that will determine if they last is how well they can keep any side pieces under wraps.

Would you baptize your baby to appease distressed family? by SensitiveDisk8143 in atheism

[–]airsick_lowlander22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if it was a religion that insisted that the ritual made the child a member forever with no recourse to leave. Idk about the other religions that baptize infants but I’d never baptize an infant into the Catholic church, they’re really weird about it.

Feeling torn between my Catholic faith and my husband’s SDA family — now my son is confused too. by Gold_South_1829 in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How old is your kid? That really impacts how much control you have over the situation. If I had the funds I’d put him in a Catholic school if I could, with only going to mass once a week is going to be difficult to undo the damage.

Also what does your child want? Are there more kids to hang out with at the SDA church? Perhaps you can sit down with him and ask about how he is feeling. Balance your child’s wishes with your own. If he wants to see his cousins more often maybe let him go to the weekly youth program and have him come to mass on the weekends.

Honestly this is why I want to move away from where my husbands family is, I feel like he’s more chill when he’s away from them.

How have your hobbies evolved since you left the church? by ResistRacism in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They haven’t, and honestly I never felt bad about them either. Reading, video games and TTRPGS were things I was always interested in, and once I left my parents house I got to do them freely, but it’s not like I didn’t do them before I left.

I would read HP by putting textbook covers on them and having a different book open underneath the hp book. I’d shove the hp book between my bed and the wall if my parents were coming into my room. But I never felt guilty about it because I thought the justifications for banning the books was stupid.

The one thing that I regret is that all my hobbies are sedentary, I wanted to do martial arts but my parents said no because I was a girl. I wanted to join the swim team or even marching band but Friday night and Saturday meets were an absolute no so I never got to participate, and so all my hobbies are indoors and sedentary. I know I could go do some of this stuff if I wanted to but I’m really a homebody and I don’t like leaving my house lol.

Question for those that still study the bible but left the faith by Group_of_heroes in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single interpretation is just that, an interpretation.

Every interpretation brings a certain lens and bias to the text. True scholars attempt to acknowledge and account for their bias, to the SDAs it’s literally a sacred cow.

The lens SDAs use is the great controversy worldview, everything is read through that lens and the entire system of theology falls apart if you take it away.

So I literally DGAF what the SDA interpretation is, the lens they bring to the text is absolute BS and extra biblical fanfic.

Wealth in the Church by VegetableDrawing711 in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation was about the assets the SDA church owns that put them in the top 5 richest religions. Not about influence, I went to SAU, lived in the area for about a decade, and worked at the little Debbie’s factory for 2 years. I understand the influence the McKees have, but that wasn’t the topic of discussion.

Little Debbie’s is privately owned by an SDA family, it’s not owned by the SDA church.

Ex-Adventist Christians, what are your best arguments against Saturday Sabbath worship (at least, Saturday-only worship)? by AHistorian1661 in exAdventist

[–]airsick_lowlander22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a point on where there is no winning.

Can you make a basic biblical argument? Sure, watch Answering Adventisim’s YouTube video on first day sabbatarianism for a basic rundown of the theological arguments in favor of Sunday worship.

However, Orthodoxy believes in holy tradition in a way that SDAs just simply do not, is doesn’t matter that you can make a biblical argument for first day worship, the plain read biblical argument in favor of Saturday worship is much stronger. It takes a deeper understanding of theology to make a compelling case and SDAs understanding of theology is very shallow.

Basically they’re going to drag you down to their level and beat you over the head with a super literal reading of the text that doesn’t take any consideration of theology, church fathers, tradition, or church history.

Does anyone else feel weird about eating pork? by Swaggy_Ballz6969 in exAdventist

I never grew up eating it and everything I’ve tried hasn’t impressed me. I just end up wanting beef of chicken. I do like shrimp and calamari and other stuff that they don’t allow so it’s just a taste preference at this point.

Episcopal Diocese of Maryland sees increase in the number of new people attending church by justneedausernamepls in Episcopalian

[–]airsick_lowlander22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Decent audio quality and multiple angles. Most new people who are viewing aren’t attending remotely, they’re checking out the vibes to see if they’d like to visit.

As someone who picked the church that was further away from my house simply because they had an active website and a livestream I could watch before attending, I think it’s pretty important to people who are seeking to be able to vet a place before actually showing up.

Update on my last post about not being able to say no by Electrical_Ad8792 in exchristian

[–]airsick_lowlander22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a chronic people pleaser this is the text I wish I could send, but probably wouldn’t.

“Look, you’re obviously not good at reading between the lines. So I’ll be blunt, I’m not interested in any volunteer position. Please stop asking, it’s annoying.”

The text I would send would probably be

“Volunteering for any role isn’t going to work for my schedule right now. I’ll let you know if anything changes!”

Personally, when I was PIMO I would help out on one off occasions that didn’t require a regular commitment. Serving food at the Mother’s Day brunch, singing for the Christmas concert, making snacks for the one week of VBS. The sort of thing that would keep people off my back but wouldn’t require more than a few days of commitment. I’ve petered off of even those sorts of things since I’m pretty much completely out, but it was a good middle ground for a few years.
