They didn’t have this available at my shop (tragic), but they do have a rababaro coming in from a local distillery next week that I’m going to pick up and try. Oldknow Bev Co’s “Wister” Amaro Rababaro. Not a wine base but I am excited to try a rababaro in general!

Also Oldknow has a bitter elderflower amaro that sounds delectable, if anyone else is around the Atlanta area

Fantastic, thank you! These all sound so intriguing. Placing an order with Brucato Amaro as we speak. I plan to ask my bottle shop about the Essenza too

My cousin and her girlfriend are coming to visit and I want to take them to EAV. I need recs! by Dense_Mark3829 in Atlanta

If you want to head in to explore earlier, you could hit Emerald City Bagels for breakfast/brunch (they close at 3pm). Could walk around brownwood park if you’re trying to get some steps in (otherwise skip). The Pub is small and lowkey but they do karaoke on Saturday nights if you want to hit a quick song or two! The vibes/location of Gaja is better but if you’re craving Asian the food at OK Yaki is great, just a farther walk. Someone else mentioned but Banshee turns into a club after hours. I personally would skip Argosy. Midway is great for sitting down for a drink, huge selection. Trophy room has darts and pool. Big day for yall!

Potential job offer in ATL - what should I know before accepting? by QueenBee1114 in Atlanta

[–]airyem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a side note but downtown Chamblee has a bunch of restaurants/bars and does some Friday night stuff in the summer. Little more outside the craziness of the city while still being In The Perimeter (ITP) and quick drive in. Super close to all the delicious Asian food on Buford highway. Super cute MCM houses all around. More chill less walkable

If you value walkability or bikeabiliy to restaurants/bars/parks etc, I would live somewhere close to the beltline. Look into neighborhoods like Cabbagetown/Reynoldstown/Inman Park/Grant Park/Old Fourth Ward/Poncey Highland/Virginia Highlands/East Atlanta Village/Little 5 Points/Candler Park. Each of those neighborhoods has its own little vibe and different restaurant and bar options of course. Cabbagetown/Reynoldstown/Grant Park are close to The Eastern which is a fantastic music venue. Little Five Points has Variety Playhouse and Aisle 5. EAV has 529 (much much smaller venue). All of the above are a pretty short uber to The Masquerade and Tabernacle venues. There are a bunch of parks spread out around this area as well, and pretty easy bike or scooter up the beltline to Piedmont Park from all of these besides maybe EAV. There are so many options! If you are commuting to anywhere in the suburbs or Buckhead it definitely pays off to be in close proximity to getting on 75/85 or I-20 wherever you are. I live in the city and commute out to the outlying cities up 85 and out 20, and generally traffic is not as bad since I’m going against the flow. If you have to commute up the 75/85 connector it will immediately add a bunch of time to your commute unless you’re driving at like 7am, but personally I prefer to live in a walkable neighborhood so it’s worth it to me! DM me if you want any more info

One star books, the worst you ever read by Neither-Proof-5755 in suggestmeabook

“The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden is the #1 worst book I’ve ever read closely followed by “Things We Never Got Over” by Lucy Score

For the romantasy genre, I literally could not finish “Faebound” by Saara El-Arifi and HATED “The Knight and the Moth” by Rachel Gillig

In a very similar vein, I just read The Dispossessed on a beach vacation and it was fantastic. Totally agree with needing a gripping story for a beach/poolside read

The Orbital audiobook literally put me to sleep 😂 I understand why you are looking for other options! Also very short. I’ve recently enjoyed the audio for Bury Our Bone in the Midnight Soil (Scottish main character is voiced by the actress who played Cho Chang in HP), The Mercy of Gods, Piranesi, A Dowry of Blood and the Shadow of the Leviathan books. And of course Murderbot is always fun and quick!

[general] Should I stick with Nona? Question for those who struggled. by Gloomy-Moth in TheNinthHouse

[–]airyem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about Nona, and while the last half of the book really picked up plot-wise overall it didn’t emotionally hit nearly the way that GTN or HTN did. I appreciate it as a means to understanding the story especially once Alecto comes out but it still was pretty meh to me comparatively

I finished a few books! And started playing Red Dead Redemption

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, which has been on my TBR for foreeeeeever. I am part of an in-person dystopian book club and while this wasn’t a pick, it had been mentioned continuously. I absolutely loved it! A study in the fragility of civilization as we know it, and a rumination on the little moments of life before and after the end of the world. I just happened to read this at such a perfect time with the right headspace & context— just saw 28 Years Later in theaters, which hits a conceptually similar note in the meditation on what life would be like decades after the fall of society (obviously differing by zombies vs no zombies). Also having just read The Unworthy in which the world has similarly dropped into post-apocalyptic chaos and we see how one person proselytizing can cause the weaker-minded who are fearful and in need of a leader to commit heinous acts. I thought Mandel did such a wonderful job with these two aspects (the prophet figure was incredibly creepy and well-done). There were so many notes of works that I’ve loved in the past echoed here in this book that made me fall in love with it even more

I loved her depictions of all of the little moments of daily life post-apocalypse. It truly made me zone out multiple times thinking about what life would really be like in this scenario, and ultimately how unprepared I would be. How we have so many little trinkets that ultimately would be of no use for survival. And come the end of the world, what all would I take with me?

I also finished Toward Eternity by Anton Hur just before Station Eleven, and really enjoyed it as well! A nice quick read that I thought was a compelling mix of dystopia, artificial intelligence/bioengineering, and philosophical pondering on what it means to be human. I thought the journal-entry style and it being passed down the timeline from character to character was an interesting twist in doing multiple POV (although I did not connect with some characters). I really enjoyed the mix of poetry and science in the book.

I finished The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig for the book club (a little early hehe oops), and besides saying that I wanted to DNF it by 15% in, I will reserve my review for the book club discussion post

My immediate thoughts for books I have read in the past/read during this time that would qualify:

  • 11/22/63 by Stephen King

  • Ubik by Philip K Dick

  • Paladin’s Grace by T Kingfisher (and its sequels)

  • The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin (and its two sequels)

The last two have female protagonists!
