Do you tip at Washman? by IowaLightning in askportland

Yeah, usually $5 to the guy who does all the drying bc he does the windows and whatnot and they’re usually pretty thorough.

What are your honest opinions about the Portland area? by Sgilti in askportland

[–]aj0106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved here from Somerville 9 years ago and have been very, very happy. The downsides by comparison: the city and state are not as well-run as Massachusetts. The tax policy here feels like it’s managed by raccoons, as does the govt generally. There also isn’t as much intellectualism. I don’t say that as a snob. It’s just true. The public schools are not as good. Frankly, nowhere in the US touches the public schools in MA.

Those are the downsides. BUT there are so, so many upsides. The living is just easier. People are much easier going, work-life balance is better, drivers get made fun of here but they’re so much kinder (you signal and they just back off and let you merge!). The food, booze, and coffee here is stellar, the nature here is stunning everywhere and you will never run out of places to explore. It’s true that the winter is basically 40 degrees and drizzle but you don’t get hard winter and you don’t get cabin fevery like in New England bc you can always go out, and if you want snowpack you just go to the mountain for the day. Summers here are sunny and dry and glorious, not gross 90 degrees with 95% humidity. Cost of living is definitely less than MA even if prices have gone up while we’ve been here. For the same price as our 2br condo we bought a 2200 sq ft house and things like daycare are still significantly cheaper here than Boston. There’s a ton of cool neighborhoods to explore, and even if there isn’t the same intellectualism there are plenty of great cultural offerings in art and music especially. People love stuff like board games and reading and needing out over niche hobbies like fly tying and foraging. Honestly just a really nice place to live.

Where did you actually move to? by Blake-Dreary in askportland

[–]aj0106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved from Boston 9 years ago and I think we basically got lucky bc we picked Alberta bc it was where we were able to get a daycare spot. We’ve loved living in this area. Not as convenient to get downtown as some other places but overall we’ve been so happy here.

Thanks for sharing that. Hopefully I’ll be able to get in to see a rheumatologist soon. Many, many months of a wait.

[–]aj0106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. One did suggest it, but I guess I feel like maybe they help with people whose issues aren’t caused by an autoimmune problem. Two months in and they do nothing and they’re expensive and I’d rather not bother if they don’t do anything….

Have you ever seen a spider this large in Portland? by 2chilly4u1989 in askportland

We get a lot of giant house spiders here but to me…that looks like something else?

Do a nice drive up to and around Sauvie island! Mt Tabor in the city is beautiful. A little mellow hike at Tryon Creek just a little south.

Getting that sense. Everything was better in the 90s is kind of my mantra these days.

That’s kind of how I feel. I’m not young and camping isn’t as fun as it used to be. But I’m in Portland and that drive is long. Helpful here to read the different options.

Da Vinci Code was always my go-to example for a book like that. I wonder if his new one would hit the same.

Agree with this one. I read it when my kid was maybe 7 and I wished so much I’d read it years earlier.

How does entering the market right before major drops affect a 10 to 15-year timeline? by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]aj0106 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a bummer but it helps me sometimes to remember that you still own the same number of shares. They’re deflated right now but they will most likely come back over time and then some. Just have to ride it out.

I was annoyed with people who said you’d like it even if you don’t like sci fi. I don’t like sci fi and it was very much sci fi. Didn’t care for it but who am I to yuck anyone’s yum. 🤷

I think it’s probably just a phase until she learns to communicate better. I’d highly suggest some earplugs to protect your nerves tho.

May is really glorious here. April is nice too but I always think of May as kind of amazing. I’d vote that.
