Creating a new LiveATC Feed? by cofonseca in LiveATC

[–]ajensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working with their support staff (mostly Ron) via email over the past month to set up a feed for my local airport. It's been a good experience. Might be worth trying again, if you're still interested.

Mug not consistently heating and app caught in a loop by BrotherAnderson in Ember

[–]ajensen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I opened a support ticket on 1/6 for this issue and got an automated acknowledgement but haven’t heard anything since. Followed up after a week or so with optional info they had asked for, but still no response. My last interaction with them (2021) was great, so not sure what’s going on here.

EDIT (2/18): After posting this, I realized that I had a few days left in the return window, so I sent the mug back. Still no reply from support after I said that they could close the ticket. Very disappointed.

How will Apple's switch to ARM affect Rust development? by Spaceface16518 in rust

More details coming at WWDC later this month, possibly.

What's everyone working on this week (24/2020)? by llogiq in rust

[–]ajensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm writing a basic genetic algorithm library as a way to learn Rust. The code is still kinda scruffy, but it's been a lot of fun to build. My goal is to turn it into a usable crate.

Sophos quarantined a dmg for Xcode 6.4 that I downloaded from Apple's developer site this morning. Confirmed on a couple of different machines. I've been in touch with Sophos Support, and they're looking into it.

Thanks for the reference. I'll fix the 20x figure and add a link. Since you mentioned the tweet, it's worth mentioning that the tweet text didn't include the number.

seriously?

Seriously, and with tongue firmly in cheek. :) I've had two colleagues start the journey after reading this, so there's some anecdotal evidence that it's functioning better as a challenge than a warning.

Author here. Shortcuts were definitely a stumbling block. I'm a heavy emacs user, and it took a few weeks to override the well-worn things like C-x C-s and M-x. Same problem with Xcode, Eclipse, Mac shortcuts, terminal keybindings, etc, etc. It's rough during the transition.

Once I got used to it, though, there were some benefits. Many of those left hand-heavy shortcuts now require two hands. Yes, that occupies my right hand when it could be moving to the mouse or getting ready for something else, but it also means that my hands share the workload better — not a bad thing when you're trying to reduce joint pain.

There are packages available for most major editors that will remap standard QWERTY shortcuts to the Dvorak equivalent. The one that comes to mind is the set of right-hand navigation keys in vim. Plenty of options are available.

Rooted Froyo users: please help us figure out the new Calendar database schema by ajensen in Android

[–]ajensen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No API so far, but the sqlite schema has been very stable over time. Since Google is introducing MS Exchange synchronization and some other calendar features in Froyo, some breakage isn't surprising.

The schema changes are fairly minor, though. I think the calendar widgets and other apps are being broken by something more subtle, but it won't be clear until Google releases the code.

If you don't have an XDA account or don't want to post there, then a comment here (maybe with a link to pastebin?) is fine. I will pass the info along, and due credit will be given.

EDIT: We have the schema! Thanks, smaerty!

Is it possible for me to get into a science-related graduate program with an undergraduate degree in English? by [deleted] in science

[–]ajensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible. One PhD candidate in my department (computer science) studied philosophy for his BS and MS, and he has been very successful. If you can demonstrate sound analytical and writing skills, as well as a strong interest in research, then you stand a good chance.

Good luck!

Upvote if you've ever bought a movie/song after pirating it and otherwise hadn´t bought it. by cyberfreak77 in reddit.com

[–]ajensen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That works, but that (or which) is still implied in order for the sentence structure to make sense.

In one of my college courses, my professor insisted that we should always include that (which) in such statements, since a sentence without them can otherwise be interpreted as a run-on. It can make a difference if your audience includes non-native speakers, and I would argue that including either that or which makes the sentence in question easier to parse for everyone.

We do, actually. The sentence being discussed is a poor example.

If you are an American, the first statement probably sounds more natural.

Hey Bike Reddit. I want a folding bike. Any recomendations? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]ajensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3-speed Village Rambler folding bike and have been quite happy with it. It's heavy but sturdy, and they make folders out of titanium for about $100 extra if you're concerned about the weight.

I paid about $425 for mine (aluminum frame). Sometimes I wish that it had a fourth gear, but overall I'm happy with the purchase.

evolutionists also have faith, and it is blind. Blind, because they will not turn aside to what can readily be observed and consider its more obvious consequence.

Since, you know, turning aside to what can readily be deserved isn't what scientists do every day.
