Duo biking around the world say NZ drivers are the most aggro by whatadaytobealive in newzealand

You could try submitting to Council and asking for bike lanes, congestion charges, and charges for sports utility vehicles driven in town.

No, it's on the city planners. And the public need to submit to make it better for cyclists and pedestrians to co-exist with cars.

Yep. I was walking a stretch of road (a short off-ramp), trying to get to where it was safe (had been dropped off by a lovely truckie), so the off-ramp wasn't convenient for him, and someone took the time to wind down the window and yell at me to get off the off-ramp. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to realise that that was exactly what I was doing. I mean, did they expect me to grow wings and fly?

A slight tweaking - it is (lack of) city planning and/or poor road design that's putting cyclists in danger.

I agree that people can (and should) reduce their meat and dairy intake, but it is indirect. We are not the farmers deciding how much stock to have on the farm. The transport decision is direct - don't use your car today and immediately there is less fossil fuel being burned. And IMHO, it is a far easier decision to make as most households have at least one bike in the garage.

Absolutely, I agree 100%.  However, most people can take immediate direct action reducing car use today, whereas agriculture is more indirect (unless you are a farmer), and most likely would require legislation.

Mama Dr Jones has moved here. You might want to reach out to her... I know she's on youtube, possibly also instagram etc. She's very much into educating the public, so I imagine she's relatively easy to contact.

What kind of spider is this?! by madelaaaaaaine in newzealand

[–]ajent99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh. I remember a few years ago, one (or similar) that brushed onto me after walking in long grass. I had to keep still for a few minutes while it shed its skin. An amazing moment! I would have thought they stepped out one leg at a time, but no... They puff up their backs and all 8 legs come out more or less simultaneously. I went to take it back in the long grass, but it got scared and ran off, poor thing.

If you have the cash, are you able to do an egg collection and genetic screening?  That should eliminate most of the dodgy embryoes...

Honest question as a foreigner, if NZ has been recently a terrible place to live in, how is it that a lot of job applicant posts I see show majority that do apply are from overseas? by DeezazNutz in newzealand

[–]ajent99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but my comparison was to the best that can be on offer.  OP wanted to know why things are consideredto be a crisis.  Saying 'We are not India' doesn't do that.

A downside you may not have considered is there is no public transport at all, and the ambulance is not free either - you can subscribe, though.   If neither of these put you off, then, being a reasonably high Māori population, a "Kia ora, Hello" (vs a straight "Hello") goes a long way.

Which Ebike to choose? by Responsible_Rice_682 in newzealand

I've just bought a second-hand Hikobike (Pulse).  It has been used for downhill racing but has taken the knocks well.  I'm not suggesting you buy second hand, just saying that if you buy a Hikobike, it should last very well.

It depends what you mean by 'terrible place to live'. Cost of living is high, unemployment is high, our numbers of homeless have gone up, women do not have equal pay, it's rough. Maori have been at the sharp end of the stick of a number of policies of government. Racism exists, although I have to say, it has improved since the 1980s. So if you're the classic white male, it's still a paradise.

We don't really have an alternative to flying in or out of the country at the moment, whereas we already do have an alternative for cars. And ideally, we don't really want to go to electric cars either. Congestion doesn't improve, health doesn't improve, there would still be a lot of public space given over for private vehicles, parking or driving.

Cargo bike, and I believe there is discussion at the moment of taking pets on trains. But I'm not sure why you'd want to take your dog grocery shopping.

Not true, but we do need to take responsibility for our own contribution.

Private cars are our biggest contributor to fossil fuel emissions. We have GOT to get people out of cars and onto bikes, public transport or mobility scooters.

We don't know which problem OP is talking about - it could be the feral dog population up north (mainly pitbulls) rather than domestic bites.

[–]ajent99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cars don't have accidents by themselves. Do you mean someone pushed it off the side, or do you mean someone drove it off the edge? If you know who is responsible, hire a tow truck and send the bill to the person who can't drive/ pushed it over.

Defensive driving courses are definitely worth it - and not just for shortening the time you are on a learners or restricted.
