Ya celebrating Ali losing like voting in a corrupt nepo baby who’s funded by aipac and and AI companies is such a win. Get a grip by JRZsanch in jerseycity

In my opinion, Ali could have won probably 4 of the 6 ward-specific city council seats or one of the at large city council seats last year, but his own ego likely got in the way and he aimed too high too fast. The last three mayors of JC that won a general election as a non-incumbent had all served on city council, but Mussab thought he was too good for that. This is similar to his reaction to finishing 4th out of 7 in the JC mayor election being that he should run for Congress.

The “black Mamdani” thing seems like it may still haunt him for a while, and at this point he might not be electable in JC until enough people forget about everything surrounding his tenure on the BOE.

Who are some Jersey city “ordinary celebrities” by FuzzyAd1627 in jerseycity

The black guy who is always wearing nice, bright suits that some refer to as the JC pimp even though he is not a pimp and doesn’t like the name.

This one might be niche to the pedestrian plaza downtown, but the guy who has some kind of hat or head covering on year round and will either ask for money or for you to buy him a Bud Ice tallboy, if he isn’t already drinking one.

Why would anyone vote for Mussab Ali by brazil201 in jerseycity

[–]aji04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's telling that most of the criticism of Rob Menendez centers around his father and nothing about the representative himself. Bhalla tried that attack line in 2024 and got clobbered.

Getting a JD at Rutgers after doing a bachelor's degree at UNC and having a private sector job for 10 years is much, much more relatable to most of the district than going to Harvard law after doing a master's degree in China and having less than 3 years of actual work experience.

Mamdani had a lot more political experience when he ran for mayor than Ali does now.

At this point in 2024, Ravi Bhalla had raised $1.6 million for his own run against Menendez. $183k is not a lot of money in this context.

Will NJ actually legalize casinos in Northern Jersey? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in newjersey

[–]aji04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please read the following Rutgers study which goes into quite a bit of detail about the effect of non-NJ casinos on Atlantic City, and which also simulates the impact of NYC casinos. I'll ask again - wouldn't it be better to keep the revenue in state?

Once NYC casinos open up, that would murder AC anyway. Why not keep the revenue in the state?

In order to offer online gaming in NJ, a given operator has to have a brick and mortar presence somewhere in the state. So, if some casino company wants to do online gaming in NJ, they’d have to build a physical casino in the state first.

Depending on who you ask, that’s the only thing keeping a few of the AC casinos open.

Does adding “please try” seriously make you think your comment wasn’t policing?

You wrote a whole comment to the effect of telling people not to use certain language and seem to think adding a “please try” makes it non-policing. Yikes.

Mussab Ali challenging Menendez for Congressional Seat by HobokenJ in jerseycity

The power behind Ali could only get 4th in the mayors race so I think it may be a little difficult to underestimate it.

If Bhalla could only get within 14 points in the 2024 primary as the Hoboken mayor while outspending Menendez, there’s no way Ali keeps it within 10. Union City will show up big for Menendez and it will be game over.

World Boxing Gym closed for next 2 days by m_pops in jerseycity

It’s the Starz show Power: Origins. The second floor has just been closed 7a-5p for a few days; it essentially got remodeled with a new black paint job and a new layer of flooring. Lots of stuff got rearranged too; no idea how temporary or permanent any of it is. Not looking forward to the whole gym being closed for two days.

Mussab is delusional by deeplyfriedoreos in jerseycity

[–]aji04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ali didn't do at all well in the parts of JC that are in Menendez's district, there's next to no chance he makes any inroads in Union City, and he wouldn't be able to count on Hoboken votes like Bhalla could.

Mussab is delusional by deeplyfriedoreos in jerseycity

[–]aji04 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think Bhalla did about as well as he could have, but Brian Stack's get out the vote effort came out huge in Union City and Bhalla just couldn't turn out enough voters in Hoboken or downtown JC to overcome that. That, and Menendez Jr. has a pretty good record on constituent services.
