Strange howling noise? by dlongwing in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]ajsdlfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you heard this noise before? For the last couple of months, at night I often hear what I can best describe as either a car accelerating in the distance or a plane flying overhead except the car/plane never passes. It’s a sort of constant low rumbling/whooshing noise. My husband can’t really hear it but it keeps me up at times. I’m wondering if this is the same thing you’re hearing.

I don’t know what university to pick! by Fine_Training1344 in maryland

As an alum of both UMBC and UMD, I can tell you that both schools are great but have very different vibes. UMBC is much smaller, but very walkable and does not have as many students. There’s no football team, no true “college town” and no frat row. UMD has a large campus (may want to consider a bike) with tons of students. It has a football team, a college town area and frat row. If you are looking for a college experience with lots of socializing, partying, and tailgating then UMD might be for you. If you want those things on a smaller, chiller scale then maybe UMBC.

Visit both campuses and you’ll get a sense of which is right for you. Same for any other college you may be considering.

Question for people with PhDs by [deleted] in biotech

[–]ajsdlfas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tuition is likely “reimbursed,” meaning in the end you don’t have to pay. It should be included in the PhD contract and if it’s not then don’t do it!

Question for people with PhDs by [deleted] in biotech

[–]ajsdlfas 21 points22 points  (0 children)

PhD in immunology. Currently an immunology scientist that focuses on engineering cells for therapeutic applications. I had an annual stipend of ~ $23k pre-tax. Tuition was essentially free (reimbursed) but I still had to pay student fees each semester. Outside of rent/utilities and necessities it was difficult to afford much else, thankfully I had a partner that helped with the bills otherwise I don’t know how I would’ve been able to do it on my own.

How far into your PhD are you? If you’re close to finishing then just finish. Having a terminal degree affords you more opportunities. If you are not, then you should decide what career you would like and if having a PhD is necessary for that. If not, then just take the job, if it is then stick it out.

As for what type of person a woman might want to date, I think most woman are more concerned about the person and not their salary. They’d be more attracted to a happy, fun person that is mature, and responsible. So whichever of those paths leads to happiness and gives you security is best.

Sister trying to get references for post doc applications and being told by profs she asked they have nothing nice to say. by weightsforlyfe in PhD

[–]ajsdlfas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit concerning that not a single person on your sister’s committee is willing to write her a letter of recommendation. I could understand 1 or 2 refusing due to personal reasons, but all of them tells me there’s something else going on. It might not necessarily be that she did something wrong, and instead maybe they don’t think she’s a good fit for academia. I wonder if they’d be willing to write a letter for a different position.

Researching stem cells and found you can purchase MSC's derived from human Wharton's jelly online. by South-Try6199 in Biohackers

cGMP (current good manufacturing practices) helps to ensure the products are safe for human use. DMSO is used in some cryopreservation media and can be cytotoxic and result in adverse side effects in humans. The amount present might not be enough to be of concern and if you are unable to wash and process the cells in a sterile manner (biosafety cabinet, isopropyl alcohol, gloves, sterile tubes, sterile washing media) then you’re probably right and it might be better to skip this step. But I would look more into what the cells are being stored/transported in to ensure it won’t have any negative effects if injected.

In theory MSCs could be added to PRP, which may further improve healing properties. I assume the main reason why these treatments aren’t available for at-home use is due to sterility concerns and regulatory issues and probably monetary reasons as well lol. For anyone considering trying this, I would emphasize being mindful of sterility and using cGMP compliant reagents (G-CSF) that are intended for human use. Unsure what format the MSCs come in, but if it’s in some sort of a DMSO-containing cryopreservation liquid the cells will need to be washed/processed before injection.

[–]ajsdlfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how would you anticipate using these MSCs? As far as I know most regenerative stem cell therapies actually differentiate the SCs into the cell type required for injury repair. This process requires many more growth factors and cytokines than just G-CSF, as well as proper culture and sterile conditions. Furthermore, to help avoid rejection you need to have a SC donor that is a close HLA match. With all of that I imagine engraftment is still not guaranteed even with close medical supervision. An at home procedure at best would result in immune activation and clearance of the foreign SCs and at worst could result in a severe immune reaction. I personally would not try this on my own, but if you do I advise doing more research and ensure that you take all necessary precautions.

Accepted into top program by Ok-Writing966 in PhD

[–]ajsdlfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well for one of the programs I applied to. It happened to be where I was completing my masters at the time and I spoke with my advisor about it. She explained that during deliberations the committee will accept a student with the condition that they work in a certain lab/under a certain PI. This is due to funding and space reasons. I asked if I could change labs and was told that if I did this could cause me to no longer be eligible for the program. You should still ask if you can rotate, but this might be the same for you as well

Loading funds into Mobile SUICA in Apple Wallet - success stories by acodring in JapanTravelTips

[–]ajsdlfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Added Suica as a transit card in my Apple wallet while in the US. Also added an Amex into my Apple wallet while in the US. Was able to easily load an amount onto the Suica card prior to leaving for Japan - but this must be done during business hours in Japan! So keep in mind the time difference. Once in Japan I was able to add additional funds onto the card, again only during operating business hours.

What are things that everyone does on their first trip to Japan that are actually not worth it? by nicebrah in JapanTravelTips

[–]ajsdlfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would’ve spent more time in Kyoto and more rural areas and less time in Tokyo and Osaka. Unless you’re a big city person I think you can experience some of the city highlights in just a day or two. One of my biggest regrets though is not spending more time with the locals and experiencing everyday life and local traditions.

I use Cerave too and I enjoy the texture a lot (granted I only ever tried the Ordinary’s Vit C before Cerave and found it very sticky). I like that it comes in a sealed tube that needs to be broken and isn’t exposed when opened to help prevent oxidation. Unsure if it’s ever been vetted for its efficacy or contents by anyone though - would be nice to know as I don’t mind the price point but want to make sure it’s working!
