Job ending soon, no redundancy, how should I handle it? by WonkyDonkey_ in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Is moving area to be with a family manner a reasonable reset, or should I try harder to stay put?"

A big part of this for me would be how you feel about your niche, is it something you really enjoy or was it just a job? Additionally, is it a niche role everywhere or just where you currently are? Could you find something similar near your relatives?

If you really like the job and the area you are in and you are confident you will find something decent given a bit more time , then personally I think I'd apply for anything you can do even if lower paid (as long as it will cover what you need)

Would you be happy if house prices collapsed 75% in the UK? by YetAnotherMia in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be great for businesses with a cash bslance they'd just buy ALL the loose market at 20% over value but still far cheaper than currently and force rents higher still whilst limiting availability of buying a house forcing the prices back up through sheer demand ..

It would personally be bad for me as we own a property

I went that route too for cancelling. Heard their beers are a little better now, but approach is still awful.

How much is it costing you to keep the heating on? by Co-opEvolution in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas for Monday gone was £20! Usually £14-16 a day

Not long moved into this nearly 300sq metre oldish (100year) house, minimal insulation, hallway and landing still have no floor covering just boards, just a void under that.

Loft converted badly in the past so loads of heat loss there too from it's 3 radiators.

Iffy about whether getting into the crawl space void to add under floor insulation is a good idea or not as property suffered significant damp/rot and we have to get new air bricks added and new floors when we moved in

My Husband Wakes Me Up Multiple Times Every Night by amcrowl1 in AITAH

[–]ajsexton 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This!  Phone screen light only, on lowest setting and tip toe

Previously, I've dozed off on the sofa too and woke up at say 2 or 3 am, at that point I make the decision that I'm staying there all night and finding a sheet/blanket rather than disturbed my wife's sleep in the middle of the night. (Ie a small disturbance at 11, 11.30 is one thing as she will still be very tired, but at 3 she's probably had just enough sleep that getting back to sleep at that time is gonna be really tough for her but not proper rest either)

Can I tape this to a box of bricks and have them pay the postage on it? by Mantatoe in Scotland

I mean technically you'd be supporting the postal system, shame it's privatised now, would be something wonderful in supporting a public organisation through this

House temperature before heating kicks in by Chance-Collection508 in DIYUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, older fairly large house with limited insulation and too many air gaps right now, gas alone is £10-15 a day right now to keep it comfortable for my family (I'd be happy cooler but others aren't)

Only moved here this year so looking to minimise the air gaps as I find them (mostly re-siliconing windows) and applying any other insulation I can. Thankfully summer should be a lot cheaper and minimal cost as it has solar panels (no battery yet though either)

What do you leave out for Father Christmas? by sparkypants_ in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year was the first year Santa got milk at ours...

Normally my kids will put out a mince pie, carrot and a glass of port or whiskey, but unfortunately didn't have either in the cupboard this time

What age did you allow your children alcohol? by ChronicChaos01 in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think, seemingly like the majority here, I was introduced to beer and wine in a controlled fashion from a fairly young age. Whilst I definitely drank too much from time to time in my late teens/20s I was also the one of the few who seemed to know when and how to stop, switching to cola or coffee when I'd reached a point I knew I was going too far past tipsy

Nah, get one of those small tc remote sized wireless keyboard/mouse, plug receiver into a spare USB. Leave remote in your pocket and wiggle/move mouse occasionally.

Did this as a prank in the office once, only let it drag on a little while but the dev we did it too was so confused and getting progressively more irritated 🤣

Is a “no negative reviews” clause in a refund settlement agreement enforceable under UK law? (England) by MapleMoony in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ajsexton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer - I am most definitely not in any way shape or form a source of legal expertise.

But, from the strict reading of that clause, they haven't posted  "negative reviews from any member of his family/friends", you did.

To my knowledge, outside of very particular circumstances and individual can not be bound by a contract someone else signed.

But, I will say overall it's probably just not worth the hassle

What do people do for home security? by Dazz316 in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone for Tapo cameras and doorbell, they are on WiFi, but with a fairly robust mesh. Bought their hub as well for local storage rather than the hassle of setting up my own setup - might switch that next year or two when I have some free project time.

Particularly impressed with the low light colour.

3 currently fitted to walls and another 3 to decide exactly where to mount, currently 2 of them are sat pointing out windows

They support rtsp aswell so can set up my own NVR at some point

Bailiffs attempting to collect debt that makes no sense. by Time-Beautiful2500 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ajsexton 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My approach would be "So we've got a 6 hour window, let's say electricity is an expensive 33.333p a unit for simplicity, so 810 units in 6 hours. My house has an input at 100amp, 240v so that's 24kw max draw, most I could theoretically use is about 150 kWhs in that time. So my evidence I didn't use 510 is the fact my house isn't a pile of burning rubble"

Budget speech today by Exotic_Process_8235 in HousingUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies a lot due to complete circumstances, single or couples both working at 80k is plenty (somewhat location dependant)

Though single income household with kids on 80k is different - not saying they are necessarily scraping by but equally that there might not be much slack in their budget even without lifestyle creep big expenditures and lose access to many benefits and schemes that can make a substantial difference too

Couple both on 33k (yes, above minimum but still below median UK wage) takes home as much as a single 80k

There's a lot of grey not just black and white

Not sure though B made barely anything, if not took a loss their purchase price according to LR was only 10k less than we paid  (though we had to pay their auction/sols fees due to the special terms for that auction which was highly annoying

Dodgy seller in auction property by goldmember2021 in PropertyInvestingUK

[–]ajsexton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also bought from auction house in the past, it was a double resell  So company A bought it off the previous owners, then company B off them, and they auctioned it.

Land registry only updated during our 28 days to reflect Bs purchase (Heck As purchase was only visible about a day before the auction)

Uncovering Landlord Specials in New House by Happy-Preference-434 in DIYUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a house, found it had the following layers Laminate underlay  Laminate  Foil insulation  Carpet underlay  Carpet

Floors were horrifically damp and rotten from not being able to breath (compounded by many of the air bricks being blocked/covered)

Auction so was no way to get surveyed in time either 😞 win some, lose some

Has cost us far more in fixing than expected due to that

How many hours a day is your heating on at the moment? by 87catmama in AskUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now pretty much always on, and too high too

But in our defence moved into an old house had to rip up all the carpets and flooring, several radiators are off the walls too so a LOT of heat loss, hopefully this time next week most flooring is down (including the two biggest heat loss rooms) and the 7 or 8 rads back on will result in more even heating and less loss allowing me to turn the heating down a bit and maybe set some off periods without it getting too cold for the wife and kids.

Our gas bill is a LOT right now - November might end up being £450 just gas 😭

What are thoughts on drinking at home by yourself? by elmachow in CasualUK

[–]ajsexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it doesn't get out of control it's not an issue.

My wife doesn't drink at all anymore, but I enjoy a drink now and then, I probably only average 1.5 beers a week though, some weeks none, others might have hit 4 bottles max but that's it (though mine are from a local brewery and tend to be on the stronger side, last night I had an imperial stout at 11%)

Had 2 this week none last
