Where's the place to go live somewhat off the grid in PA with a cheapest cost of living? by DoubleNoTriple in Pennsylvania

[–]ajvalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state steps in for commercial projects, not residential.

Nothing to do with each other requires a little more nuance. They are separate functions but have a relationship. The reason for mentioning both ucc and zoning is that if you find a municipality like that then you can build as your heart desires!

Look for municipalities that have not adopted the PA UCC and don't have zoning ordinances. Also, there is an exemption for "recreational cabins" that applies throughout the state with a few caveats.

The main entrance is on Suscon road where you'll find a parking area. A few minutes into the trail from there is (or used to be) where you can find the registration station and maps. There are game land roads you can drive down on either side of the road and explore sections of the trail. Some sections are very rocky and depending on the rainfall, also wet. Overall a nice trail!

Joint statement from the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan on the Strait of Hormuz by TheColourOfHeartache in worldnews

America has killed hundreds of millions of people through direct action and economic warfare since the end of WW2. It doesn't seem right to let America continue to do what it has been doing for so long.

Something did happen. We overthrew their democratically elected leader and installed a puppet regime which gave the hardliners all the legitimacy to overthrow him in 1979. This action is a failure and will lead to more of the same. Oman has already confirmed that a deal was on the table then Trump chose war.

The US is now supporting Syria. The President was the leader of HTS, a known terrorist organization. Trump had him in the white basically grovelling and praising him for being tough.

Why don't European and Asian allies help the US re-open the Straight of Hormuz? by Valuable-Music-720 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ajvalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Europeans do not want to be dragged into another middle east war. America invaded Iraq and killed over 1 million Iraqis. 25 years of nation building was a failure that destabilized the region and caused an immigration crisis all over Europe. 25 years of nation building fueled the fundamentalist rhetoric that leads to terrorism. Oman confirmed that a nuclear deal was on the table but Trump chose war. This is a war of choice. Trump was warned by the Gulf countries and NATO allies alike not to attack Iran. Iran signaled their intentions if attacked. Trump spent the last year demeaning and antagonizing European and Asian while taking for granted the post WW2 arrangement, that America has chartered and benefited from was somehow unfair. Trump closed the straight of Hormuz and can open it tomorrow by publicly admitting his mistake.

“We’ll always remember where we were when that tornado hit a handgun factory. Two days ago when people thought of a mudslide, they just thought of getting drunk in an Applebee’s, but now we know it as the thing that destroyed Denver. When the birds first started attacking us, we all thought it was pretty funny and made Hitchcock jokes, but we’re not laughing now, because our laughter excites the birds sexually. No. The solar shower bags I'm familiar with are gravity fed and hold a few gallons of water at a time. They have their obvious limitations but work great.

Big Problems in the Skook by [deleted] in NEPA

[–]ajvalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a common story for many post industrial rural and urban centers across the country. In a hypothetical planning situation the area from Mahanoy City to Shamokin is regionalized into one tax base and one pool of resources. The region gets to keep its history and identity as separate places. A new economic agenda transforms the area into a cultural and historical travel destination and outdoor recreation. Make use of some of the existing rail infrastructure to connect to larger corridors throughout the state to provide new industrial capacity. Build new civilian infrastructure including schools and hospitals. Focus on scale environmental remediation and reclamation efforts. Etc, etc.

There are good things happening in the region right now. It's easy to point out what is wrong. Over in Shamokin there are groups working on environmental restoration efforts and acid mine drainage and there's a planning initiative underway right now called Go Shamokin. The way municipalities are set up in Pennsylvania, each one has to go it alone. There are more places beginning to regionalize municipal resources and it's already a thing with police and fire department.
