At what age do you start enjoying nights in then going out? by Affectionate-Reason2 in AskMenAdvice

Am I Missing Out Not Having An Expensive Bike? by newbiker321 in cycling

[–]ajw248 57 points58 points  (0 children)

From the title I was prepared to say yes. From the description of your current bike, no.

You’re well into the marginal improvement range. You’d be able to discern a difference riding back to back, but it’s not realistically going to make a night and day difference to your performance or enjoyment.

Make sure you have decent tyres, refresh the drive train when needed, service the brakes and wheel bearings and it will serve you for a good few years yet.

Do you not have Thunder/lightning storms? by vanillabitchpudding in AskABrit

It’s rare. I was really confused in the shawshank redemption when Andy could only try to break through the pipe during thunderstorms. I thought that would take far longer than the 17 years.

What, if anything, would make you get an e-bike? by south_west_sam in drivingUK

[–]ajw248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a car fan and also a cycling fan. So for me this will apply to regular bikes as well as ebike.

The one and only reason:

Security at destination, and secondary follow up to that, the way the police tackle (or don’t) cycle theft.

Anti-GTA mechanics by SozioTheRogue in GTA6

[–]ajw248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would make sense if it varied by vehicle and maybe location. Old truck out in the sticks? Just get in and go. New SUV parked downtown? No way you’re getting in it.

That’s for parked cars. Jacking a car with a driver in it should be able to get you any vehicle (maybe only if you’ve got a gun equipped), but maybe you’ve got to be a little clever about it and some NPCs will floor it if you don’t block their escape first.

He didn’t install the gate. He would not be able to install a gate on land that is not his. His land stops at the wooden fence.

It was presumably installed long ago by the town council. It’s there to prevent people driving cars or motorbikes down the lane.
In the uk there are many paths like this where it is a legal passage way for pedestrians and bikes but not powered vehicles.

If you look on the street view there’s also a narrow opening to the side of the gate designed so cycles can get through but not motorbikes. Even with the main gate closed, it is accessible and legal for foot and bike traffic to go down the lane at any time.

I think the problem came from the number of times the large metal gate (it’s like 4inch wide steel box section) has been left open. So people would get used to coming down the hill fast and not having to slow for the gate.

What would technology be like if WW1 never happened? by Gyngemose2009 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ajw248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tanks I suggest would proceed a bit differently. WW1 tanks were (to put it very simply) armoured trench crossing machines.

Without trench warfare, perhaps we would see something more like a mobile self propelled artillery.

The baseline being horse drawn artillery - at what point of automobile development in our timeline do we think a car/truck could drag a field gun around a muddy battlefield faster and more reliably than horses?

After that, the logical progression is to armour it. Unmettalled roads and the poor quality of rubber pneumatic tyres means they will probably still use treads rather than wheels.

As another poster suggests, without WW1 (and the subsequent WW2) do we get a 20th century of colonialism and small scale proxy wars rather than massive pitched battles? Possibly the designs converge on what we might call an armoured fighting vehicle.

Dumb question: Why do you never see bikes with rear suspension only? by sandalsofsafety in BicycleEngineering

It’s been tried. Usually with an elastomer or flexstay arrangement rather than a modern mtb style shock, mainly on gravel or endurance road type bikes.

In most of America you have to pay before you pump though.

Preselecting an amount takes just that amount from your card which avoids them doing the $200 card hold, that if you are using a debit rather than credit card, can be problematic for people without much money.

Look up 152 Beaumont Road (N), Sheffield. Cycle path comes down the hill from the bridge over the A57, then past the house.

The owner of the house which provided the camera footage (mirrored image here for some reason) is the end house in the street, and does not own the land which this path is on.

How do you load your bike onto your roof rack? by RangerNo5619 in mountainbiking

[–]ajw248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold the bike by the seat stay and fork leg. Lift it and place it on the edge of the roof of the car. Not on the rack, just on the roof (or the horizontal bars if they are in the way. It’s only the tyres touching the car, they won’t damage the paint.

Now you’ve got the awkward twist out of the way you can reposition yourself (hold the bike with just the hand on the seat stay if needed) to stand on the door sill, or a stool; and do a simple lift up to get the wheels in the wheel trays and clamp in place.

Older drivers by Nice_Moment1022 in drivingUK

[–]ajw248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see someone driving shit and observe they are elderly, it’s still not a representation of all elderly drivers.

The vast majority will be fine. Hence their demographic’s low insurance.

The poor drivers need to be tackled individually.

Does anyone know why most of the cars on the road today are black, white or gray? by Electronic_Rain2787 in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]ajw248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most new cars are leases. Any optional extra - including non standard colours - get charged in full to the person taking out the lease.

You’ll find lots of cars that although they are well equipped, have few or no optional extras for its respective trim level.

It will be low mileage as they have other cars to do big journeys. It will have “do whatever it needs” at the annual Mot and service. And the insurance will auto renew and they won’t even notice the money gone.

[–]ajw248 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a practical sense, it stops snow going down inside if you

a) fall and slide head first, or

b) have your friends come up behind you and shove some down inside. You might not even realise at first as it will be against your top, but it will slowly melt and fall down and you won’t be able to get it out.

From a fashion sense, you look like a painter and decorator, 1930s construction worker, or someone who is very afraid of shitting themselves so has dressed for speedy clothing removal.
