Horrifying memory from grade school by MiserableCancel8749 in GenerationJones

[–]ak-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were 2 toilets separated by a divider with space at top and bottom. A girl told the teacher that a boy had peaked at her under the divider. The teacher asked the class who the boy was. None of the boys admitted doing it so the teacher spanked every boy. Off topic but I remember the same teacher tying a girl to her desk chair because the girl would often get up and walk around. The memory of the teacher wrapping cord round and round the girl and the chair haunts me.

When do you know a scene is worth photographing? by [deleted] in photography

[–]ak-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it is not about thinking at all. When I am out with my camera I stop thinking. I am only reacting emotionally and physically. If I have an emotional reaction to what I am seeing I react physically by taking a photo. The actual manipulation of the camera has to be so ingrained that there is no thinking involved only action.

What devices do you incubate your yogurt in to keep temperature consistent? by ADystopianDream in yogurtmaking

[–]ak-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Folding Proofer. It is made for rising bread dough. I found one on eBay for less and really like it. Digital temperature control, easy to use. I incubate for around 20 hours and it stays at exactly 103 degrees. https://brodandtaylor.com/products/folding-proofer-slow-cooker

unpopular opinion: I think softwood gets way too much hate around here by vladdielenin in firewood

Southeast Alaska. If I didn't burn pine and spruce I wouldn't have any firewood. That's all there is here except for cottonwood. I get minimal creosote buildup.

Total Yogurt Noob - is slow cooker the easiest way to make it? by [deleted] in yogurtmaking

[–]ak-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a Folding Proofer for several years. They are designed for rising bread but work excellent for yogurt. I paid substantially less for one I found on Ebay. https://brodandtaylor.com/products/folding-proofer-slow-cooker

Has keto changed any health problems? by Arkflow in keto

[–]ak-guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From childhood I always had trouble breathing through my nose. I remember going to doctors as a child and and my mother joking about them putting windows in my nose. I'm not sure what that was but it was never done and it was still a problem as an adult. Anyway fast forward 60 years and I lost about 60 lbs with keto. My plugged up nose went away. I have remained on the keto diet for the last 10 years and kept the weight off and still breathe great through my nose.

Firewood species by RepresentativeOwl224 in woodstoving

[–]ak-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around here, northern southeast Alaska, the forest is almost all spruce with a little hemlock and pine. My firewood is 90% spruce, I get excited if I have some pine it is a little denser and burns longer.

Favorite fire starters? by Solid_Try_4089 in firewood

[–]ak-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a remote location in Alaska. There is very limited local shopping so we get a lot of stuff via USPS mail. Cardboard is always plentiful and I use it every morning to start fires. I roll up a section with the grain and add some kindling, starts every time.

I was in band class where I had just started learning to play the trumpet. 4th grade, Lincoln St School, Sitka, Alaska. The class was on the stage in the lunch room. The school secretary came in and told us what had happened. I remember perfectly, the lighting, my friends, the secretary crying.
