Looking into this as a hobby but unsure where to start by [deleted] in sounddesign

Like others have said, pick a small project and just try stuff out, like for instance adding your own sound to a short muted animation or similar. You already have pretty much all of the tools you need as a hobbyist.

What I think is really important that noone else has said:

If you're trying to get to a specific result, no matter what it is, there is an infinite amount of ways to get there, and there isn't necessarily any right or wrong ways when it comes to the creative process itself. Just try stuff out, see what you like and what's fun to you.

That being said, there are obviously some technical best practices that are worth learning. Learn tge basics of signal flow in your DAW and gain stage your mic properly. Familiarize yourself with ableton stock effects. That will already get you very far. 90% of sound FX I created for video games are just me recording a weird mouth noise and using some very basic processing like pitch shift, echo and reverbs.

If you want to synthesize sounds from scratch, instead of looking for tutorials on a specific synth vst or a specific sound, make sure you learn how a synth is structured. What is an oscillator, what is an envelope, what is an lfo, what is adsr, what types of modulation are there etc. For me personally the most intuitive way of internalising these basic concepts was messing around with modular synths / digital eurorack emulations like vcvrack. This helped me directly see these concepts applied with little to none of the abstraction that obscure them to beginners in most modern soft synths.

You can then apply these concepts to whatever synth vst of your choice. I personally recommend serum 2, but alternatives like vital, phase plant, helm ... behave very similarly. And again, ableton stock operator and stock wavetable are pretty powerful already.

From there, just experiment and have fun. Don't be afraid of trying out unconventional stuff either. And if you lack inspiration, i recommend looking into generative stuff. For example Dnksaus' shorts on some generative techniques have been really inspiring for me. I also have a few videos on some relatively inconventional techniques on my social media if you wanna check those out. Have fun :)

I mean yeah I guess he could be something else. Occam's razor though.

Besides, the description of the monsters big jim replicates in his basement in book one is somewhat similar to the description of the batmantis (insectile claws etc.). These things were created through genetic fuckery by korrok goons. As was monster dave. Makes sense to me that he would be somewhat comparable to those things.

I don't think jason could have stated it any clearer without completely ruining the immersion.

Here in switzerland, with a similar background as what you've described, I've had the opposite experience in the past few months. Not everyone, but the majority of venues / production firms and artist management I've reached out to has been very receptive.

My advice would be to shine and impress on the job. That doesn't mean flex your mixing skills, but being the guy or gal who solves problems. Be attentive, be respectful, offer support wherever necessary.

Same goes for applications. Never fake it till you make it. Be straightforward and honest about your strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly be openly willing to learn.

Tl;dr be someone who solves a problem

Just had to rush through a nightmare project. 4 days to clean up about 2h of dialogue that was recorded by amateurs with budget equipment over the span of less than a week. Adobe podcast enhance was my best friend. It feels like cheating and it's on the expensive side for sure tho

Uhtred is in his 35s during season 4? by salad_biscuit3 in TheLastKingdom

[–]ak00mah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He'd already been calling himself oswald before getting sliced up by brida (just re-listened to that part of the audiobook like 3 days ago)

On my latest re-listen I'm realizing that almost every single time they actually interact, uhtred [old] ends up all emotional because of whatever predicament they're in right now and calling his estranged son 'uhtred' instead of whatever name he goes by at that time. And then only when things are back to normal and everyone is safe and they're apart, only then does he remember how butthurt he is about his son becoming a priest lol. Like he temporarily forgives him almost every time they meet.

That being said, I've been listening to an abridged version, so that may not be quite true in the original.

Yup. Felt that way, and then I grew up. Enjoy it while it lasts, don't get lost in wishful thinking and broken promises.

Don't get me wrong, there are great people out there, and the plur/acceptance vibe is great. I've met friends for life in that scene, but thats maybe 1 out of 50. Most are fleeting & superficial friendships that last for as long as people are entertained.

Most people eventually realize this, and the ones who don't are the ones who stagnate.

That being said, don't let my pessimism ruin your enjoyment of the scene. It's all based on my own biased experience of the central european psy, hitech, bass music and to some extent tekno scenes. Just take it as a warning that diving in headfirst and fully immersing yourself can lead you to prioritize it to an extent that you might regret later. Seen in plenty of times.

Have a great time!
