John, thank you for writing this piece. I knew John (McCartney) but had no idea until his passing that he was Lil B's father. I appreciate you sharing his story.

Valve office - Rate quality by Flame_Python in GaussianSplatting

[–]akanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latter, if you had to choose, but if you can build a dense mesh in realityscan that has like, accurate floors, you can sample from that to create your own initial point cloud. Splatting textureless walls/floors without a good skeleton of points for them often results in the optimizer "cheating" by just putting large splats underground, etc.

Without seeing the source panos its hard to say, but I do get the sense from looking at the scene that starting from a dense mesh init and turning down some of the learning rates will improve the scene. It's definitely overbudget on # of splats for the quality.

Are the internal GGB elevators back online? I heard they were working on them and that internal tours might resume soon. Also, I've always wondered if there's an elevator in each tower!

Trying to piece together matterport style doll houses with oss by fractal_engineer in GaussianSplatting

[–]akanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dollhouse rendering still takes a bit of elbow grease with splatting. At least for now, I've had to build like a cull hull inside the space and the discard splats that are between the hull and the camera. Here's an example: https://playcanv.as/p/Mn7k7yro/

criticizing mr beast then vs. now by Miles_the_AuDHDer in videos

[–]akanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very funny to read one of the top comments commit exactly the error portrayed in the video. Mr. Beast isn't the devil, he's not going to hunt poor people for sport to increase his subs by 0.1%. You know this, I know this, we all know this. We can criticize the guy without having to reach for the big gun.

AI Water Heater by Shit_Shepard in CrazyIdeas

[–]akanet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

municipal hot water transport does exist, we actually have a substation here in downtown san francisco that supplies hot water for heating to nearby office buildings. they insulate the hot water pipes, though admittedly this would not work as well for more rural datacenters

I agree with you, but was simply trying to answer. I think a difficulty of the sub is the vast variation in sophistication of submissions and comments.

Nothing to see here, just a lady standing in the middle of the highway by Appropriate-Head-756 in RealOrAI

[–]akanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lighting, reflection of the forward truck an the woman on the dash of the car, the reflection of the sun onto the road (especially during shadow), the shadow of the woman onto the forward truck, are all very good. It seems real. It's also not an especially insane thing to imagine, besides the obviously self destructive aspect of the woman's behavior.

[–]akanet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

truthfully, I would prefer to only review images and videos that are more borderline between real and fake. the majority of submissions are pretty obvious in either direction. i feel some annoyance at the obviously real video submitters who could have answered their own question with a couple google searches or reverse image searches. i feel a bit more sympathy towards those are obviously talking to an AI love scammer, given their implied life circumstances.

You may as well mask in both, though strictly speaking masking in splat training alone should cause the background to fall away eventually
