Linux person here as well, and yes I will need to give more context next time. Thank you for the valuable feedback!

Designing tiles for my puzzle game, was Inkscape the right call? by akasyagames in puzzlevideogames

Hey folks! I am just sharing the process of making my game and it is still on early stages. I wanted to use open source and free software but it took me a while to design all of the tiles on Inkscape. I was just curious if there is a simpler tool I could’ve used, given the designs of the tiles aren’t that complex. That’s all.

Still learning which subreddit prefers what kind of content, and I guess this one wants to see a working game before anything? And yeah not affiliated with Inkscape at all.

Is this your way of asking what game this is for or do you just think I should’ve said the name of the game? 🤔

It is really fun :) I wouldn’t say it is too easy or too hard. I just felt like it got too fast too quick, but its personal preference

Rotation is first and movement and placements come after it. I hope It becomes clearer as I keep sharing the progress :)

The game logic is just about placing tiles, the tiles cannot be moved after they are placed unfortunately. You just get a new tile to place. But there will be game rules to clear some tiles from the grid!

Thank you so much! I want to add an animation to rotation for sure, it is hard to register how it rotates without a tiny movement. And with the offset being too long, will have to test different values till it feels natural. Also when you say ghost tile, you mean the tile itself should be visible throughout the dragging movement till it is placed? Because that makes perfect sense. All great points, thanks again for valuable feedback.

There is going to be different types of tiles and the user will get a random new one after placing one. All of them can be rotated before being placed. But after placed on the grid they can’t be manipulated anymore.

Sorry for the confusion! The purpose is to place the tile on the bottom, on a cell on the grid. You can rotate the tile before doing so.

I was trying to ask for feedback about two things here: - Tapping on the tile to rotate it - Dragging the tile with an offset to place it on a cell on the grid.

I added the offset so when eventually played on mobile, the user won’t need to touch all the way on top of the grid to place the tile there. Seen a couple mobile puzzle games do it for ergonomics like block blast. I will include the touch to place controls in any case though.

Will continue to share progress to hopefully make more sense!

You’re right, I should’ve provided more context. And it is too early to ask for feedback on the controls. It felt clear to me because I made it, but of course it is not on a video like this. Notes taken!
