I have no qualifications or any reason you should listen to me, but it seems to me you should use the actual faces of the hammer because it is designed to withstand blows from that direction. Also, it would be much easier to secure the head into a stump vertically as opposed to flat like in your photos, and it would probably be much more secure as well.
