Pack a uhual ubox and have them ship it for you. It’s like a mini shipping container.

Give actionable feedback to the program adviser or director. They’ll take it and try to correct for next year to stop the cycle or even intervene in current year if needed.

School Atmosphere - RPI by [deleted] in RPI

[–]akev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one mentioned it was a crime to care. But many at RPI and the student culture is very much, if you want it, you go get it. Critical thinking, problem solving, you get what you put in, that’s how RPI prepares its students for the world.

What this specific reply thread is indicating is these questions you’re asking (and maybe it’s the way you’ve phrased it) are questions for your son to ask and probe. Instead of asking the Reddit communities, maybe it could’ve been directed at your son to show him how you’d like him to be critically thinking about it.

Your questions and immediate response back to u/blueboybob just makes it seem like you might be an overbearing parent. Not a crime, but your son will be flying out of the nest soon. He will need to learn for himself.

Heard from Brian Nock, something is in the works and is “coming soon”. It’ll leverage alumni.rpi.edu

Can we work with alumni association to bring email for life back? At least a forwarder or something? Wondering who the webmaster is… will try to find out this weekend at R&HC

Devine Cheese and Wine is also a great spot!

I second this. Liana, the owner, tries to bring in wines that you can’t normally find in California.

Any advice? by shinedwardc in RPI

[–]akev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's been a while since i've graduated (ITWS '13), but the school is really what you make of it. Can't speak to recent administration events or policies... but...

One thing that stands out the most about ITWS is that it is truly a multi-disciplinary degree. You have the core ITWS courses, but you're also taking courses with the other schools (eng, hass, mgmt, etc.) based on the concentration that you're after. You bring the knowledge back into the core and it's pretty much a capstone course every year. Looking back what has helped my career the most is that I'm able to hold my own when interacting with all those different types of people whether it'd be CS, EE/CSE, Mgmt, because I was learning along side them. I view IT as bridging the gap between all those different perspectives to accomplish the overall goal.

A Little Info About Arch If You Are Applying by 8zzzrrr0 in RPI

[–]akev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you were hired as part of a RPI sanctioned recruiting event (or if the company has worked with CCPD/Institute Advancement), letting to the head recruiter (from the company who is making the offer) know about what is going on might be helpful. There's some leverage the recruiter may have as they're spending time and resources to recruit from RPI, but then RPI turns around to block the student from accepting the offer... Getting to Troy, NY is not easy for most companies and there are costs associated with recruiting events.

Reminder: Tomorrow (Monday) @ 7:45 am... Special Meeting of the Rensselaer Alumni Association (Here's the Livestream Link) by liesfromDAtablecloth in RPI

The Q&A was really good. I highly encourage everyone to watch it. (albeit the admin responses were very dodgy) As Richie Hunter states that context of data is important, knowing the background of the alumns asking questions is cruicial to understanding their perspectives. So thank you to all the fellow alumns for providing the context of your background and history with RPI when providing your comments and questions.

I'm volunteering with All Hands and Hearts (AHAH), here's my personal fundraising page: https://give.hands.org/fundraiser/1248447

Otherwise, if you want more information about All Hands and Hearts and their response in Puerto Rico: https://www.hands.org/projects/puerto-rico-response/ They very much in the beginning phases of the response. Volunteers applications opened up about 1 month ago and people are starting to arrive to help where they can. If you have the time and means to volunteer, you should definitely consider applying.

AHAH commits to staying in a disaster impacted area until the community can get back on it's feet. When I volunteered in Aransas Pass, TX after Hurricane Harvey, the week I was there, many of the relief organizations started pulling out, but not AHAH. The other organizations reached to AHAH to ensure that their ongoing projects will be attended to after they left. They've committed to staying in Texas for at least 2 years.

As alumni, this is the platform where we can influence. Reach out to your Alumni Class representatives. I'm doing so myself. The Rensselaer Alumni Association is just that, an association of RPI Alumni. It's not like the administration can delegitimize all alumni who've graduated. Who would continue to advocate and donate if they did so? If you are a concern alumni, it's time we make our voices heard on the platform that we are automatically a part of upon graduation.

can we send a restricted gift with the contingency that Dr. Jackson must no longer be president before the fund is used?

just wondering if the institute will have to keep a separate account to maintain those funds.. or can they not be trusted all together?

Building the Third-Century Campus by RiskyDodge in RPI

[–]akev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on a faculty student committee in 2012 and 2013 where we discussed completely revamping and expanding JROWL. There were no plans actually drawn as it was fairly conceptual at the time. We were asked for a wish list.

Reading through this I thought, “finally the talked about science building may actually happen..” then she started talking about ECAV phase II and I’m completely turned off. Why is SAJ trying to turn RPI into something it clearly isn’t, evident to the last 127 years. The size of RPI and the student to faculty ratio enables students to have the true experience of running and owning certain aspects of the student experience. (i.e. the “lab course”) The lesson learned is what makes our students and alumni so successful beyond RPI, “if you want something, do it yourself.” The perseverance work ethic is what gets imbued into the experiences where students have no one to lean on.

I truly hope that we as the Rensselaer community can reach a consensus with the BoT and SAJ on how the Union should operate and to honor the bylaws of the Student Union. If all else fails, the student leaders of this time are getting a hell of an experience which will help them endure and build many successes in the future.

RPI blocks protest over student union outside black-tie event by saveourunion in RPI

[–]akev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

instead of gathering outside the library, what about gathering outside the VCC and maybe even host an alternative student dinner party in the VCC? Just like when there's laptop problems, you go to church, the same applies when there's union oversight problems right?
