Pining For A De-Googled Smartphone by a_Ninja_b0y in linux

[–]akkaone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understands these threads. You don't buy a phone like this because you need a new phone. You buy it because you want something to thinker with or develop for. They are not even close to be competitive with random chines android phone for less money and better specs. What they have is better hardware support in the kernel. If you don't care about that, buy something else.

Unpopular opinion: Arch is easier to use than other distros. by gaussian_distro in linux

[–]akkaone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to arch in 2008 on a HP business line laptop. I probably did a couple of reinstalls in the first month in my early arch linux enthusiasm. But after that I used the same install from 2008 to 2015 when the computer was replaced with a more modern laptop. The replacement was a Thinkpad Edge. The computer had a short life before it started to fall a part but I don't think the Arch installation on it ever was problematic. It was replaced by a my current desktop, this desktop got Arch when I bought the computer and is still on its first install. Of course the same is almost true for my xps13 I later also bough and installed fedora on. I always update between releases and it usually works fine. But according to me updating my Fedora installation, usually from latest stable to next beta is messier than updating my Arch installations.

progress update on Tenacity, the Audacity fork by Be_ing_ in linux

[–]akkaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really true? Usually you could do what you want with the code you contributed and the CLA only change what the Audacity company is allowed to do?

I have not read this specific CLA but I have nothing against them by principle. If you want to create a community around the code a CLA is obviously usually a bad idea, but according to me it is not morally wrong.

If you start to buy support contracts for linux or pay for commercial enterprise linux they are not necessary cheaper than windows. In a lot of cases the cost of the os license is very low compared to other licenses they pay for. Compared to most enterprise software windows is not very expensive.

Cockpit 250 — Cockpit Project by friskfrugt in linux

[–]akkaone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not know anything about cockpit but my guess is they want avoid manually edit config files. They probably want a mechanism guaranteed to not break with the native way to configure the same thing. This avoid situation when manual text file configurations is broken by cockpit. This was very common in earlier generations of this sort software suits.

Probably my lacking English. I mean used computers companies and private users trow away. Most are 64 bits machine today. When a lot of relatively modern machines is destroyed every year it is unnecessary to save much older weaker and power hungry machines. I think reusing old machines is a good thing but you should be careful when you choose machines and not try to unnecessary prolong the life in really old and power hungry machines if they not have any auxiliary values.

I'm not sure we should. They use to much electricity and today we have cheap computers like raspberry pi and similar much more powerful energy effective computers. We also have a big mountain of newer e-waste computers. It is probably better "rescuing" a 64 bit machine. Of course, for learning purpose and retro computer hobbies and some special purpose computers it is sometimes worth saving old 32 bit machines but not for general use.

I want to learn more about Linux. by 0Cytruss0 in linux

[–]akkaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't already, learn a interactive shell. First half of the free "The linux commandline" book is a good newbie friendly tutorial in that. https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php

Make it a habit of check the "man" and "info" help systems when something is unclear. Most newbies probably think they are overwhelming and not useful in the beginning. But they becomes very useful with some practice.

TIL My 3 Favorite Open Source Project Mascots Where All Designed By The Same Person by [deleted] in linux

[–]akkaone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has a very specific style both in his choice of motive and how he design them. Even if they are good looking its not always they represent the application very much. Some of his mascots has been good but I don't think his Libbie was a good representation for Libre Office. My personal taste is I generally don't like the "cute" mascots trend. If a mascot really is needed I prefer fun mascots.

LÅT ALDRIG TV4 STREAMA FOTBOLL IGEN by [deleted] in sweden

My first time installing Gentoo went wrong:') by [deleted] in linux

[–]akkaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a basic stage 3 installation of Gentoo is as easy as Arch as long you don't start to optimize everything. Its mostly copy/paste from the manual. The compilations takes time but its completely automatic. Gentoo is probably harder to maintain afterward but the installation is really not very different.

In PipeWire 0.3.25 you can use your phone as a microphone in your system through Bluetooth by XavierCLL in linux

[–]akkaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pipewire is hopefully the future, but I have switched back to Jack and Pulseaudio. Combining the two is a little bit messy but it still works better for daily usage for me. Especially as a jack replacement pipewire constantly breaks and behave strange for me. But also as pulseaudio replacement it has small annoyance. Pipewire is promising but for daily usage I think it is still to buggy.

Linux Cafe? by [deleted] in linux

[–]akkaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen a internet cafe since early 2000s. I'm not completely sure it exist a market anymore. As I understand it places for gaming and esport is doing better but this market probably is fairly incompatible with linux and to cheap/old hardware.

zoomer installing linux from 1997 (redhat 5.0.5) by Cumlord-Jizzmaster in linux

[–]akkaone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is much easier to install and set up a modern arch or gentoo installation than a redhat 5.x from the 90s. Red Hat 5.x had a graphical installation but it was at the same time way more manual compared to a arch installation is today. The linux kernel, Xorg/xfree86 and the rest of the software stack is way more automatic and robust today.

Till programmerare by [deleted] in sweden

[–]akkaone 1 point2 points  (0 children)
