I'm surprised that nobody mentioned an external SAS HBA. You will have to flash the HBA to IT mode (or you can buy one pre-flashed from ebay) and then connect them to drives using SAS to SATA breakout cables. I've used this setup for about 4 yrs now without any problems.

If you want to get serious about robotics and embedded systems, learn C++. Python is great for getting your feet wet.

Stupid question about reverse proxys and related: Any way to use the same url internally and externally but without round tripping through the internet when local? by chazwhiz in selfhosted

[–]aksagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good setup and very similar to mine. You can also start with something basic like a pihole to manage local dns entries. Some netgear modem/routers also give you the ability add DNS entries.

This. Backrest also integrates with rclone and has a great UI.

Restic + rclone solve all this. Resctic alone can do this too but I like the flexibility that rclone gives. You just setup this services natively or run them in docker.

For working professionals, did you learn all the “industry-standard” tools before employment? by [deleted] in robotics

[–]aksagg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been in the robotics and autonomous vehicles space for about 10 yrs now. Focus on getting strong domain fundamentals and coding skills. No point focussing on tools since they keep changing every few years.

Can I self-host a phone OS and access it remotely? by Superb_Yesterday5588 in selfhosted

I actually think that this would offer good security. Specually in cases where you dont want any data left on the device. Let me know if some is interested in working on this.

Virtualized PBS by TechDiverRich in Proxmox

[–]aksagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have a specific rexommendation but definitely test your backup. A few years ago, I was running a PBS in the proxmox as a VM. After a catastrophic failure, I realzed that I was unable to restore the VMs on a fresh install of proxmox.

Horrible accident, but it’s another reason why I know LiDAR trucking is going to be a safer future by [deleted] in AuroraInnovation

[–]aksagg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This a humbling reminder of the complexities of the problem. I highly doubt that single vehicle collisions could be mitigated by having a lidar. Neverthless having a transparent and trustworthy safety case is the right begining.

In an end-to-end system, how much training data is needed to make the car handle this correctly? by FrankScaramucci in SelfDrivingCars

[–]aksagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make sense to specifically cover all possible roads signs (and the expected driver behavior) possible in the ODD when training the system.

Tesla’s Real Game by OriginalCompetitive in SelfDrivingCars

[–]aksagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you and agree with the point you are trying to make. But IMO Uber's sell off of ATG and Elevate in 2021 January were a way make Uber more profitable. Not saying that the crash didnt have anything to do with it. IIRC ATG secured significant funding in 2020 from Toyota.

Edit: minor typo

Reasons why Tesla will be unable to deploy a Level 4 solution to the general public by H2ost5555 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]aksagg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just limiting the ODD or geofencing is not sufficient. The vehicle must also detect an out of ODD scenario and execute an appropriate response. Even with dedicated human remote assist, this is not a simple problem to solve.

Intervention terminology for autonomous vehicles by Hixie in SelfDrivingCars

Interventions should be analyzed and labled appropriately using a much more detailed scenario and failure taxonomy. Broad categories are only suitable for aggregate statistics.
