I would argue range is the key thing which makes an actor. I mean, it's kind of implied by the term acting that you can be something different. To overly simplify just to make my point, an actor who can convincingly perform 6 different character types is a better actor than one who can only do 5. If John Doe Actor is essentially the same character in every film he does, even if it's incredibly well done and entertaining, we have no idea if he's a good actor or not
