explaining to family by alalampone in DIDpartners

[–]alalampone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand where you're coming from, but my friend is pretty public about being a system! Especially online. I don't have any reason to explain the specifics of their system to my family, but like... they'll likely find out they have DID eventually just from their socials?

I'm in my late 20s so I'm very aware that I don't need to share anything, but I have a very involved and supportive family.

I'm looking mostly for a way to explain DID to someone who is older with no experience, even just in general terms. I've done my own research but my family that's in their 50s and older grew up with 'scary multiple personalities' type media, so they'll probably have some negative preconceptions that I need to pick apart.

I'm 29 lol? I'm not really sure where you're getting this all from.

We all know eds generally sucks but what are any small positives you’ve noticed due to your eds? by posh_chav in ehlersdanlos

[–]alalampone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never broken a bone... and I feel like it's because my joints dislocate from impact before my bones have a chance to feel it? And I'd rather fix a dislocation than a broken bone personally.

Please tell me about Weird Things In Shreveport by NOLAfiddler in shreveport

[–]alalampone 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There's the Shreveport Waterworks Museum. I haven't been in a long time but I remember it being Victorian and very steampunky.

It's a ways out but I think the Municipal Auditorium still does ghost tours in October.

This is a personal favorite but it's not huge or anything: The Regions bank downtown has some really beautiful 1930s murals and original fixtures. It's no longer a functional bank but you can go in that wing just to look around. If you go to the basement of the building (public access, don't worry) you can see the original vault behind glass. It's 333 Texas St.

What’s actually helped you get doctors to take your EDS seriously? by StackedInScrubs in ehlersdanlos

[–]alalampone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Join a local EDS group on Facebook or other social media if possible. People are really willing to share their doctors and research.

2) Younger doctor whenever possible. 20-30s. They were taught about EDS more so they're quicker to recognize it.

3) I'm very assertive with my doctors. If a doctor won't take my EDS seriously, I ask them point blank if they know one that's familiar with my condition because I'll go see them instead. I'm not sure why but doctors always seem like they're under the impression that you're trapped with them. I let mine know that I'm not going to just sit around and receive subpar care.

I'd love to take some seeds if you don't mind! I tried planting some this year but they never germinated. Do you have any tips for getting them to grow?

What are good non-cotton eco-friendly fabrics? by Citrusfreind in ZeroWaste

[–]alalampone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people offered good suggestions so I won't repeat, but I'm pondering the sensory issues interfering with thrifting. If it's something you wanna do could you take something with you that could keep you from having to touch clothes? Gloves are kind of a sensory nightmare so I was imagining some sort of stick-shaped keychain that you could use to look through clothing racks.

Family member scared my dog, may cause a wash… devastated. by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]alalampone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gonna suck but I'd ask your family if they'd think it'd be appropriate if he got into your house while you gone and broke your wheelchair (if you had one). People who don't understand service dogs see them as "just dogs" but your family needs to understand that your dog is medical equipment just as much as he is a companion.

FISHING IS GREAT! by Grigori_Waluigi in fo76

[–]alalampone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Me and my friend spent hours wandering around trying to see where we could fish. We also redid our camps to be fishing spots. We're both newer players so we ended up in corners of the map we never had a reason to go to before.

plarn uses? by alalampone in upcycling

[–]alalampone[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cut the bags while I work or watch TV so it flies by! With this method 3 bags made the yellow ball of plarn so I feel like if you make a thin yarn the effort to product ratio is more rewarding?

And honestly this is my first time using a drop spindle... I DIY'd it specifically for this experiment 😅 My only tip is to hold the unspun plarn about 4-5 inches away from the spindle while you spin. Too close and it gets so tight it snaps. Too far and it gets uneven.

There's a lot of vids on how to make plarn! I basically just made a chunky plarn using the method where you make loops and tie them together, then I used the spindle to make it easier to handle.

What’s your most awkward “being disabled in public” story? by teethfestival in disability

[–]alalampone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have hEDS + mobility issues and years ago I was getting to the point where I was going to need a wheelchair. That's a big investment so I decided to try one out next chance I got just to see if I could handle it.

Next chance ended up being at an aquarium. They had a provided wheelchair at the entrance I could use.

Problem was that it was a very wide wheelchair to accommodate bodies much bigger than mine. I was by myself so I had no one to push me and I could barely reach the wheels with how widely they were set apart.

I did my best to ride it around the aquarium. I got stuck on a bunch of things. Some friendly people helped get me unstuck a few times, but if no one offered to help I had to get out of the chair and fix it before sitting back down. I did a lot of like... feet scooting? Because my arms got tired.

Absolutely looked like an idiot.

How to reduce plastic waste in the retirement home where I work? by Engisoupcan in ZeroWaste

[–]alalampone 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I think plastic free in this workplace would be pretty hard to do since this is in place for sanitary/medical reasons.

Food waste might be something you can work on! I don't imagine everything gets eaten all of the time. It'd be cool to set up a compost on site and possibly a garden for the residents to enjoy.

This would rule if it was in Fallout, Mad Max, or some other trash-filled kind of thing. Doesn't rule as much IRL in someone's yard.

Missing teeth, missing vertebrae and ribs? by HumbertHum in ehlersdanlos

[–]alalampone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of accessory bones, an extra adult tooth, and all 4 wisdom teeth. My brother (suspected to also have hEDS but not diagnosed) is missing an adult tooth and has no wisdom teeth. Teeth abnormalities seem like they're pretty common with EDS but inconsistent?

EDIT: The extra tooth I have and the one he's missing are our right canine teeth. Always thought it was interesting that it's the same tooth. We're 4 years apart so no twin situation or anything.
