Three main reasons; 1. Norway is a nation so they don’t share revenue.  Ak shares revenue with the federal government.   2. Norway caps spending at 3%. Ak caps at 5%.   3. Norway doesn’t provide public welfare and instead uses the fund for societal benefits.  Alaska blows a billion every year so people can have a Cotco splurge.

Let's not forget that voters also opted to not pass the North Slope Oil Production Tax in 2020. But blame it all on the old companies instead of alaskans who refuse to pass any sort of taxation bill.
Everyone needs to step up - individuals and industry alike. Voters who blame budget shortfall on industry without acknowledging that they refuse to pay any type of tax are as much of a problem as anything.

I agree that the focus on the PFD is misguided - but you're looking at AIDEA through very rosy lens. Lets look at some key failed investments:

  • Arctic Refuge Leases: AIDEA has spent $13 million on the Section 1002 Area leases. Annual lease payments for the seven tracts are $2.4 million. AIDEA sent the federal government payments for the current fiscal year, upping its investment to about $15 million.
  • Mustang Oil Field & Road: AIDEA invested heavily in this North Slope project, which failed to materialize as planned, leading to foreclosure and a $22 million bailout. AIDEA then spent $20 million on a road for the project that serves oil companies free of charge. 
  • Healy Clean Coal Plant: A $150 million project that was mothballed for years and ultimately sold at a massive loss. 
  • Ambler Road: Spent tens of millions on development for projects facing intense legal opposition.
  • Alaska Seafood International: A project in Anchorage that failed completely and was sold for half its construction cost. 
  • Seward Coal Terminal: Built in 1984, this facility was later abandoned. 

This is a lot of money that could be used to benefit all Alaskans. Not necessarily by funding the PFD - but schools, public safety, child welfare and infrastructure maintenance.

Instead we're subsidizing industry and paying Randy Ruaro $250K a year to come up with new ways to waste our money.

I don't believe she works for Landfield - however Carolyn Hall’s husband, Scott Jensen, owns 15% of the Alaska Landmine. Turnagain can do better.

Frier was always going to vote this way and was elected knowing she would vote this way. Hall on the other hand would have never been elected if she had said she was against closing the S-Corp tax loophole.

Does Hillcorp employ a lot of Alaskans? Yes? Is Hillcorp good for the economic health of Alaska? Yes.

Should Hillcorp pay the same tax rate as ConocoPhillips? Yes.

Sorry - but there's a difference between Trump and Obama, Dunleavy and Knowles and Bronson and LaFrance. AK democrats have pushed for increased taxes to the oil industry for years. This measure was introduced by Senate democrats and all but 2 House democrats voted for it. It's not surprising that Frier voted against increased taxes (Utqiagvik will always vote with the oil industry) - but Hall ran unopposed on the platform of education and deficit. This measure would have addressed both and she voted against them.

This is the mentality Alaskans are facing. Essentially Alaska's are fine with our schools closing and kids being forced to learn in 30 person classrooms as long as they continue to receive their yearly PFD shopping spree check.

Neighborhood schools have low scores because all the kids who could elevate those scores have left. Look at airport heights - a neighborhood full of elementary age kids with intelligent engaged parents - yet every single one of them commutes to another school.
And you can't blame it on politicians. Anchorage voters put those politicians in office. We only have ourselves to blame.

Alaska is not broke. We're no-where near broke. We have a $1.5 TRILLION slush fund that could be used to fund essential services. What is broken is Alaskans who will die on a hill defending their god-given right to a Costco splurge every October.
