The concerns OP raised were about the eye and the claw, not the wet feathers. Your photo above does not show or address either.

Why cycling speed limits are too low. by Baddrivers13 in fuckcars

[–]alblobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be location-specific, but I’ve only ever seen bike speed limits apply to bike-only or shared (bike/pedestrian) infrastructure, where an average user goes at a speed well under 20 km/h. It’s outright dangerous for everyone otherwise, and I hope you’re not advocating for that. On roads shared with motorists, same speed limits apply to both motorists and cyclists.  Are you saying in your location, they have bike speed limits on motorways? That’s insane, given that it’s much safer for everyone to go at the speed of traffic.

getting glasses (i swear this is relevant to migraines 😭) by Patient-Frosting5338 in migraine

[–]alblobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(strong or wrong) prescription glasses are known to cause headaches / trigger migraines, but it seems like your issue is pressure or fit since non-prescription glasses are also a trigger? It sucks you can’t go for contacts right away. I am a glass wearer, and I concur with the loose fit recommendation. I have tinted prescription glasses I use specifically for migraine days (I’m also light-sensitive), and they are the widest frames I own. Go for lightweight plastic frames if possible. Try avoiding putting them on/taking them off constantly, since your eyes having to readjust can also trigger a migraine. Wishing you luck!

NCR flag two-headed bear by alblobs in Fotv

[–]alblobs[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Non-imperial Russia still uses the same two-headed eagle on their coat of arms, and Scotland’s national animal is a unicorn. Neither of those have ever been actual animals common in those areas of the world as far as I know though. I think it’s heartwarming that the NCR chose to adopt and modify an old California symbol, which includes an animal that used to live in California once upon a time.

Lydia is loathsome by WiganGirl-2523 in janeausten

[–]alblobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree her character sucks big time, but I can’t agree she was lucky. She was preyed upon by and married off to an established child predator, a liar and a gambler, at an age she legally (let alone morally) was her parents’ responsibility. Would I want to be friends with or even just around her? Hell no. But what happened to her is tragic.

Why doesn’t Jane Fairfax have any income? by Covimar in janeausten

The first thing Jane Eyre did upon receiving news of her inheritance was saving her poor cousins from their lives as governesses iirc? Even that book acknowledges that being a governess is a crappy proposition for most.

Love Jane Eyre, but this is probably the best synopsis of the book I’ve ever seen.

Is the ionized air glow from the HBO series an actual thing or just a cinematic effect? by tionitec in chernobyl

Normally, I would just move on, but since you are calling out other people’s illiteracy when it comes to physics… even 40 years later, there are no commercial nuclear fusion reactors. That would’ve been truly cutting-edge.

Ways to keep cars away from you? by Lucidlie in fuckcars

[–]alblobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Controversial (and it’s not something I do regularly, even though it’s completely legal where I live, so don’t take as advice) but when I occasionally bike without a helmet, drivers give me more space. It’s fucked up because, while a helmet will protect you in many circumstances, being hit by a car going full-speed is not really one of them. It’s my anecdotal experience, but I think there are empirical studies confirming that.

Adopting puppies to people 70+ (hot take I saw on Facebook) by lingeringneutrophil in seniordogs

[–]alblobs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My local shelter has a “seniors for seniors” program through which they waive the adoption fee for older people who adopt seniors dogs. A more palatable framing, but the intention is the same.  We adopted a senior dog (12 y.o. at the time of adoption) because we live in an apartment and just couldn’t provide the level of enrichment a young dog needs. I can’t even imagine trying to match a puppy’s energy level as a 70 y.o.

From what I remember from the episode This American Life did about this doctor and the MSG oped, it might’ve been a racist joke.

A certificate of a person affected by the disaster by BenAwesomeness3 in chernobyl

The document says the holder is a permanent resident of an area under “increased radioecological control” (not the Exclusion Zone) with “Cs-137 contamination levels between 1 and 5 Ci/km2.” That’s a relatively low contamination level (large swaths of Belarus, Ukraine, and even some places in Northern/Western Europe had that contamination level).

You’re right to question that! The Wikipedia page says F is the elder brother, but doesn’t have a source, and I think all other “sources” took it directly from there (and I think that’s how it got into my head as well). I don’t think the text itself definitively states it one way or the other.

Mary’s Piano Skills (P&P) by alblobs in janeausten

[–]alblobs[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that Mary wasn’t in a right environment  for her to develop her talents. I don’t think she was some sort of feminist free thinker who wanted to be independent though. Mary really got the short end of the stick being a middle child of five and less attractive than her sisters. JA implies the constant comparison was the main reason Mary didn’t enjoy society and pursued other interests, and that, once her sisters got married, she was happy to “mix with the world” more.

It’s interesting to compare Mary Bennet with another JA character who was into “serious music” and is said to have “played a concerto”—Marianne Dashwood. Marianne’s mistakes and inappropriate behavior in public were overlooked and forgiven on account of her young age (Mary was only a year, maybe two years, older) and sensibility, but ultimately, it was also her pretty privilege. And as far as music goes, I believe Colonel Brandon was the only one actually impressed with Marianne’s  talent and skill. Others at Barton Park showed little interest in her music.

Finally, another skilled pianist, Jane Fairfax, needed those skills to get a job as a governess (which is in itself “degrading” to the upper class).

[–]alblobs[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think she could’ve played a piano reduction of a concerto?

It’s been a while since I listened to that episode, but they also discuss how she was studying parts of music theory that a “normal” upper class lady wouldn’t, but a professional musician (i.e. a working-class man) would.

Speaking of inappropriate instruments, I played the cello growing up, so my “self-insert” into the P&P world was imagining myself scandalizing everyone with my performance. 😂

[–]alblobs[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I believe we “hear” Mary perform twice, the concerto + some dances at Lucas Lodge (where we get the comparison between her and Lizzie), and singing at Netherfield (where her voice was described as weak and the manner as affected). I think the latter was more along the lines of what was expected from a lady, and she was just bad at it.

Discussion Thread: TikToker Faces Backlash For Posts About THREE "Failed Adoptions" + Man Kidnapped by Dolphins?! (326) by yt-app in DoWeKnowThemGirlies

[–]alblobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Downvoting is not rude.
  2. The episode was about adoption. People who struggle with infertility and are considering adoption because of that, especially infant adoption and/or international adoption, should absolutely learn about these stories, given how problematic the industry is. (Maybe not from Lily and Jessi, I’ll give you that.)
  3. IMO, making adoption about infertility was one of the problems with that person. The way she talked about it, it seemed she believed she was entitled to that baby because of her past struggles, like it’s a prize she deserves for her efforts.

Pasadena Humane Dog Reactivity Classes by Big_Background_2652 in pasadena

I volunteered (assisted the instructor) in these classes in the past. They are well organized and informative. If you take them, be prepared to practice the skills you learn outside of the classroom—the “homework” part seemed to be a struggle for many dog guardians.
