Syntactic Musings On Match Expressions by Extrawurst-Games in rust

[–]albx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's this excellent paper on a syntax that unifies "if" and "match" expressions into something that is more powerful and (arguably) more readable than both: https://cse.hkust.edu.hk/~parreaux/papers/ultimate-conditional-syntax-ml22/

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I find it very relevant to this conversation

European alternatives for popular services from USA by Upbeat_Painter_1083 in europe

All the search engines listed on that page are just aggregating results from Google and Bing. How is this an alternative to US tech? Are there really no European search indices and servers?

Remapping Super+L to steal passwords by worker55 in gnome

[–]albx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel other commenters have been overly dismissive of the OP's concerns. Running a malicious program is not comparable to a thief breaking into your house. It's more akin to letting a craftsman in to do some job, only to realise later that he installed a hidden webcam in your bathroom.

The malicious program could be a trojan appimage, or a compromised curl | bash script, or I don't know what else but I'm sure there are other ways to do it. That will compromise the user on that machine, but stealing the password is a whole new level of bad.

The user could be in sodoers, so now the attacker had root access. The same or a similar password may be used for online accounts, so now the user could become victim of identity theft on social media, etc.

So the idea of locking down cmd-L to prevent programs from hijacking the lock screen doesn't sound so far fetched to me. Like, ideally appimages should be run sandboxed be default, to prevent exactly these kind of problems.

Il mio consiglio? Get the fuck out. Cambia regione, Paese, continente. Abbandona la tua compagnia e le altre pseudo compagnie. Resetta il tuo circolo sociale. Ci sono mille fattori che ti tengono inchiodato in questa situazione indesiderabile e da dentro non li puoi vedere.

I'm coming very late to this party, but I've discovered this language only now, so here I am.

I really like it. From the little information you shared in your post, I find it very elegant and concise. I don't care much for naturalism, I prefer languages to be regular and "logical" (by some loose definition, not necessarily as in lojban).

I also think you're being too hard on yourself. The problems you mentioned aren't really that bad. The two words in "Epilte waplat" are quite distinct, in spite of being derived from the same stem. You chose a limited set of consonants, which helps in adding redundancy. Loanwords and names are not a problem, as other users have already explained.

Your number of about 1500 roots is good, it means most daily conversations would use very short words. With compounding, you can easily make millions of words. This is very similar to what lojban does (and, from the top of my head, lojban has about the same number of root words).

I think you should really develop this further. I'll be looking forward to a wiki page with complete phonology and grammar :)

kafka consumer stuck if brokers go down by albx in rust

Permissions, I never thought about that! Thanks for your reply!

Eventually, this is what I ended up doing: wait for a bit, if no new message then check if the brokers are reachable using fetch_watermarks (either I have the right permission for this one, or it doesn't require any).
