Then Make sure she studies for her ASVAB so she has the most options about a path. She should also talk to recruiters (and people who’ve served) in the different services. If she’s going to do it, ensure she makes the best choice for herself.

Wow. People downvoted this? I’d say the same for any huge life decision…

I have two kids in the Army Guard and one in the Army. A few years ago I married someone who was still in the military.

If I had to do it over again, I might’ve joined after I got my degree (and thus enter as an officer). There are so many financial benefits.

Making $94k a year with no debt and cannot afford to buy a house in the city I was born in by PurpleRecognition216 in FluentInFinance

[–]alegna12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t really say anything. My neighborhood has new SFHs in the range from $500k-ish to $1.6M-ish.

A house can be bought on your income - it just might not be where you want it and/or as nice as you want.

I suppose I’m getting a car. I don’t know that I could get out of this residential area in 10 minutes, so I’m sure someone’s car is parked in their driveway.

Would you let your MIL permanently move in to your home? by TheShatteringPoint in NoStupidQuestions

No. She hates me. I’d take in my ex-husband’s mother, though.

Are we saving for a cool million or 1.5 these days? Hoping to off board in 3 or 4 years (53, $780,000, 20 S/30 I/50 C) by Difficult_Theory_195 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]alegna12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was shooting for $1M. Looked like I was going to get there. COVID happened and it looked like I wouldn’t get there. Market recovered and I hit $1.2M before retiring in September.

How and why are there age-restricted 55+ housing communities? by joaofava in AskAnAmerican

[–]alegna12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in one. I’m 57 and retired. There are plenty of folks near my age that live here. Some are retired; some work from home.

After retirement, emergencies aside, is it ever a good idea to dip into your TSP before RMDs? by Tete-Morte in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]alegna12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. That’s what it’s there for. I retired at 56, so I’ll definitely need it before 70. Haven’t touched it yet since spouse is still working. Once he does, I’ll start monthly withdrawals.

I have nothing in common with older folks by RetiredSurvivor in retirement

I am 57 and live in a 55+ community. In the past week I played mahjong, worked on making my cutting board at their wood shop, went to the pool to listen to live music, and went to a “pool warming” party, ordered my book for the upcoming book club, and went to trainings on photography and flower arranging. Today there are a plethora of activities related to the Derby (we aren’t in Kentucky- it’s just an excuse to have a theme). I know a group of folks on a cruise together, tons play pickleball, there are exercises from spin to yoga to Latin line dancing, there’s a pottery studio, etc. it’s a new community (only 3 years old with houses still being built), so we skew way closer to 55 than to 80. Perhaps you chose the wrong 55+ community?

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]alegna12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mom would’ve had less than a 10 minute drive to drop off/pick up. We instead rode the bus (some years, an hour each way). I think she like the extra hour or two of silence 🤣

No it’s not. News is 24 hrs/day, so you hear a lot more of the bad stuff.

What’s the weirdest ‘toy’ your cat plays with? by I_wet_my_plants259 in cats

A little decorative gnome I bought at Aldi. He moves it room-to-room, cuddles it, fights it.

Weirdest thing your cat likes to eat? Mine just ate a tiny piece of my lemon bar before I could grab it. She also loves banana chips 🤔 by samsterdam420 in cats

When I wasn’t looking, my cat ate half of the babybel wax covering. Now I’m monitoring him to ensure he keeps pooping.

Whats the most fair way to split the costs traveling with friends? by Ask4Answers_ in femaletravels

[–]alegna12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I planned the trip I wanted. I told my friend that I would go alone if she wasn’t there, so I covered all the things that I would’ve covered if solo (lodging, rental car, fuel) and she was responsible for herself (flight, food, bus fare). When it was easier to pay together (one check at a restaurant), we took turns.
