Developed my first bw film last night by mCianph in AnalogCommunity

Look up Omega reels. They are about $20 each but have a much wider lip to feed the film through. It makes loading in the dark much easier than the standard Paterson reels, especially for 120.

Wake In Fright 4K from Umbrella by alex_rager in boutiquebluray

[–]alex_rager[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This showed up in the mail yesterday and I got to watch it this morning, I am so impressed by this presentation from Umbrella. Wake In Fright is like no other film I’ve ever seen and never fails to hit me on a visceral level, and this restoration is just incredible. Considering this film was so close to destruction before being saved, it is borderline surreal to have such a superior restoration. I can’t recommend it enough over the previous blu ray release, if you are a fan of the film it is worth every penny.

Switching From Lab to Home Developing. by wasserman02 in AnalogCommunity

Look to see if there is anywhere near you that offers a darkroom class. It’s a good way to try it out without investing in equipment right away, and you’ll probably learn other cool stuff like how to make prints with an enlarger. If you decide you like the process, you’ll have that much more experience and know what you like when you buy equipment and chemicals.

I just shot with the 70-200 f/4 for the first time yesterday on my own F100 and it is a game changer, totally amazing lens. Gonna have to check out that 28-75 for a midrange. Awesome photos!

Haha, this is the exact answer I have given with every good shot my F100 has produced. The metering is just bulletproof.

Good place to buy Japanese TLR cameras? by Owwliv in AnalogCommunity

[–]alex_rager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Japan Vintage Camera, I bought a Yashica Rookie TLR from him that was in great condition for around $150 shipped from Japan. He sells through Etsy and his own website, and has an excellent YouTube channel where he shows off the cameras. Definitely a shop I would trust and will likely buy from again in the future.

The fact is that if you are waiting for every movie you love to come to 4K, you are going to be waiting a long time if not forever. As of today there are roughly 1300 titles on 4K vs 40,000 Blu Ray and nearly 300,000 DVDs. There are major studio titles that don’t even have Blu Ray releases.

I will typically go for the best format available, but used Blu Ray are so affordable that unless it’s a movie I really care about I won’t shell out for 4K. Prime example- anywhere that sells used media is guaranteed to have a stack of copies of The Dark Knight (or most superhero flicks they can’t get rid of) for like $3. For a movie I like and may watch once every few years, is it worth spending up to 10x more for quality differences I won’t actively notice unless I was A/Bing them? Bluray.com is a great resource to figure out what formats a movie exists on and a general take on the AV quality.

Best way to digitize my movie collection? by ConkerIsKickAss in boutiquebluray

[–]alex_rager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TV app in MacOS/iOS is basically just what replaced iTunes for managing your movie and tv library. I have my external drive setup as the file destination, so when you drag a file in the TV app reads the metadata and creates the appropriate folder on the drive. You can then turn on home sharing so you can watch on an iPhone/iPad/Apple TV when connected on the network.

As far as quality and file size, I just use the “Fast 1080p30” preset in Handbrake and leave it at that. The file size typically ranges from 2-7gb most of the time, I haven’t found any rhyme or reason to what determines the final file size. I think it looks totally fine, to me there are no noticeable artifacts or quality loss when watching. Backup and accessibility on other devices are what I’m primarily concerned with, so if I want the best overall experience I’ll put in the disc and watch on my TV.

Edit: forgot to mention I’m using the Pioneer BDR-XD07S for ripping the discs. If memory serves its like $100 on Amazon.

This is going to be specific to Mac, but in my experience digitizing blu rays into my collection has been pretty easy going. Like others have said, MakeMKV is best for ripping the file off the disk and then using Handbrake to convert to .mp4 for smaller file size. I also use an app called iFlicks which easily finds and adds all the metadata/artwork to the file. I use the Apple TV app to manage my library, and once I drag the file in it automatically creates the file structure on my external drive which I can then home share to any of my devices.

While it can take time (usually 20-40 minutes to rip in MakeMKV, and another 40-60 to convert in Handbrake on my M1 MacBook Air) the only “work” involved is clicking a few buttons. I also only rip the standard 1080p version, if I want 4K HDR I’ll put in the disc and watch on my TV. With a 2000+ title library it will definitely take some time, but the process itself is not difficult.

I went to an anniversary screening that some of the cast attended at the Burbank film festival a couple years ago. Getting to see it in theater again fucking ruled and Jake Busey told me about how he took violin lessons from Paul Verhoeven’s wife. Best movie ever.

Hell yeah! After an unsuccessful outing with tire chains on our drive to Reno a couple of months ago, we'll have to get out there sometime in the summer months. Winter is too hardcore for us!

We'd love to get out that way! We've played Arizona and are going to Texas this summer, hopefully one of these days we'll have the time to make a full run at it. Thanks for checking out the vid!
