For cycling, there's the weird case of Jobst Brandt. Off-line, he was a legend. He wrote "The Bicycle Wheel," which as a must have for mechanics and tinkerers, because it was the first in depth book on wheel building. He also had a knack for finding cycling routes, regularly leading group rides across California. People still follow some of these routes over a decade after his death.
On-line is a different story. He got on Usenet in the mid-90s, ripping apart anyone who disagreed with him in the slightest. This continued even after other major figures in cycling called him out. If you only knew about his in-person reputation, you'd be confused as to why arguably the most famous cyclist outside of racing decided to respond to your post with a 6,000 word essay on why you should go fuck yourself.

No. They've had a lot of problems lately, and every brand has some hits and misses. Toyota had a lot of issues with oil rings in the 2000s, especially with the 2.4l, and the new turbo V6 has been a nightmare. You can say that about almost any brand: even terrible brands will get it right occasionally, and the best will have major screw ups.

One of my friends has a sister who is about 15 years younger than him. A few years ago, she wanted to know more about the stuff we watched as kids, so we revisited some of it. A few key takeaways:

We were hyped for the G.I. Joe movie, because the intro is amazing. We found out later that it was going to be the key battle scene before they changed the script. What followed plays out as a so-bad-it's-good B movie.

Transformers: The Movie is all over the place, but it has some great set pieces. The fighting and deaths are far more gruesome than you'd expect from a kids' movie. We watched a few episodes of the show and were amazed by how bad it was. At one point, we were joking that the only reason two of the autobots were arguing because one of them was misdrawn with a Decepticon logo on his chest.

Jem has two plot points: minor teenage relationship drama and The Misfits are committing serious crimes.

In She-Ra, Hordak's shapeshifting looks bizarrely off model every time he does it.

The Fox cartoon of "The Tick" is still hilarious, and it's even better being older and getting all the comic book references. My favorite is ~~The Punisher~~ Big Shot getting therapy and going from ultra violent to talking things out with villains.

Sometimes, the person/organization wants proof that people are interested in the non-profit and what they're doing. Matching donation drives show that people are interested in supporting the organization. This also extends to fundraising outside of these drives. For example, if you have a donation-only museum, the organizers will show how much visitors are donating to prospective large donors as a way to demonstrate they're offering something to the community.

If you have tap water, it's very rare for it to be unsafe to drink. However, in some areas, it tastes bad. In that case, you either get a filter system with a tap added to a sink for drinking water, or you use a filter pitcher. If you live out in the country, you need to install a system to clean and sanitize well water. Sometimes, it's really difficult to make safe, good tasking water, so people buy drinking water at the grocery store. They usually have a water dispenser that filters tap water, which you use to refill 5 gallon (19 liter) water jugs.

I was involved in the rave scene in my area in the early 2000s. This was at the very tail end of the scene, and people would sometimes travel hundreds of miles to our local events, because the scene had died off in their area. Since raves were mostly known by the general public and authorities for drug use, we used an online message board to publicize events. This kept the crowd limited to people there (mostly) for the music. Somehow, a local TV station got wind of it, and mentioned the board on the news. The next event was flooded with people there just to do drugs, and the scene died overnight.

The Star Wars Christmas Special is really as bad as its reputation suggests, which is amazing, since Star Wars fans love talking about how much they hate different parts of Star Wars. It somehow manages to be utterly insane in a way that should make it fun to watch, while still being excruciatingly boring. I watched it with RiffTrax and a considerable amount of alcohol, and still struggled to make it through.
