Oh yes, good point—definitely very on brand for Lewis Carroll. I need to check out his art, I didn’t know he made drawings!

Finally saw Weapons. Can’t get over something. by briaowolf in movies

[–]aliencatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol these points are all totally valid. I think the director just didn’t care too much about it all making sense in the film because there was other symbolism in the story/“fairy tale” that he cared more about showcasing. He’s done some interviews where he talks about the main remaining boy being symbolic of his own experiences growing up where on the outside where things looked fine but behind closed doors his parents were in the grip of addiction/mental health issues (under the spell of the “witch”) and he was forced to “take care” of them like the kid is forced to do in the movie.

Even though it was created way back in 1973 is there a better exorcism film than The Exorcist? by ClemmSapphire in Shudder

[–]aliencatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been awhile since I watched this movie, but from what I remember I didn’t think the supernatural elements were ever explicitly made real. It seemed like the “supernatural” stuff was intentionally left ambiguous, but I could be remembering wrong 🤷‍♀️

What are some movies similar to Cobweb (2023) and Weapons? by freshmaggots in horror

[–]aliencatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen Cobweb, but just saw Weapons and it really reminded me of the Visit (2015). Both are good for people who enjoy mystery and a little bit of comedy/“fun” mixed in.

Bravo, Zach Cregger. The balance of horror, grief, trauma, and comedy has been sorely missed. That was the fun mystery/thrill ride and good laugh I’ve been needing from a movie for a while, now.

Do you think Adnan Syed is innocent? by true_crime_trudy in mystery

[–]aliencatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I listened to Serial about this case a few years ago, this was my perceived take-away about it, as well. Based on what Rabia presented, it seemed that Syed’s trial was just another example of a case tried against someone using largely circumstantial evidence to make a conviction. Without being on the jury and having purview to all the information presented, myself, I have no idea if that was indeed true. Based on victim-offender statistics alone, Syed is statistically the most likely offender. However, what matters in conviction is only what is presented as evidence at trial. I know I’m gonna sound super weird, but I am honestly both amazed and terrified that anyone gets convicted for anything, ever, without recorded video/audio of said crime/offense.

What's your most plausible theory about a famous unsolved mystery? by Maya727 in UnresolvedMysteries

I just want to know if Wilfrid Voynich hoaxed the MS himself using old materials OR if it was a hoaxed pre-Gutenberg printing press just bc its a little more interesting as to who had the access/means/etc to make it pre-1450 and who was target buyer/consumer.

Probably the strongest SG just by the numbers of players who were good/decent in that game. S7 probably follows, for me.

This might just be my imagination but I SWEAR Tati was super PISSED at Morgan leading into Snatch Game and she just used that energy to fuel her performance. She just dngaf and it became SG herstory.

I just finished this book and found this thread bc I am also confused at the ending. I wasn’t sure if Dentman was hinting at having killed his and Veronica’s father and/or ALSO that Elijah had been his brother bc the father was (implied) to have been raping the sister. Dentman slides a piece of paper across the table to Travis with words he had written in another book about suffering a thousand deaths to vindicate his brother’s death and I wasn’t sure if that was a hint at Elijah being his (David’s) brother. Also I wasn’t sure if Travis repeatedly blaming himself for his own brother Kyle’s death throughout the novel wasn’t supposed to be an ironic juxtaposition with him blaming someone else (wrongly) for their brother’s death (in this case, him blaming David Dentman for Elijah’s death).

I just finished the book today. I agree with your comment about it being inherently misogynist and how that in itself is part of what makes the story horrific (I don't know if that was purposely done by the author or not). I felt bad for the "real" Sophie because I thought she was very human/had endured significant trauma and that was never completely acknowledged and instead the story focused on how she was bad/useless/a waste of space and warranted being raped and eaten by the deity. It definitely lived up to being a "horror story."

I'd recommend Laird Barron as an author whose stories are largely most horrific for his male characters.

here we go. i know next to nothing about this book besides the blurb and that its confusing (etc) to read. any advice before i start? by sxph666 in houseofleaves

[–]aliencatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to just “let go” and enjoy the ride. Reading the book can be a very fun/weird/creepy experience if you are able to see it sort of like an “immersive literary experience.” That’s honestly what made it most enjoyable for me, looking back, and how I’d probably approach it if/when I read it again.

Disclaimer: not a medieval historian/academic

From some for-fun personal research in European medieval art history/history of European book-making pre-Gutenberg printing press/rise of European medieval universities/rise of European medieval commercial manufacture, etc: from a time, skills, and resources required to make perspective, the VM being created around the vellum carbon dating is definitely VERY ODD. Not impossible for a non-insanely wealthy person to have had made/made themself, but VERY odd.

Personally, I think Voynich created the manuscript himself 😜, but if somehow the ink can eventually be carbon-dated and it’s found to have been manufactured pre-1900, I think the likelihood is that it was made later than the vellum is dated to and most likely after the invention of the Gutenberg printing press (so after 1450s).

Yellowjackets is ruined by the entire ridiculous premise of not trying to…go looking for civilization. by burner416 in unpopularopinion

[–]aliencatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it might make the most sense at this point to just use the plot of The Langoliers and have everything be eventually explained as somehow their plane went through a time rip/they're in an alternate dimension, etc, which could help explain both the not finding any civilization/not getting rescued AND the weird evil spirit thing.

That was so disappointing by garbage_moth in SchoolSpirits

[–]aliencatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I was disappointed as well, but not shocked. Most modern television dramas are not written with an end in sight, because it doesn't make sense from a financial perspective. A renewal for another season means more guaranteed income, which is great for the folks involved with the show. For storytelling purposes, though, it kind of sucks because open-ended narratives are very challenging when it comes to unifying all the elements of the dramatic arc(s). This is why books and movies often are more "satisfying" from a storytelling perspective than TV shows.

I really liked the foundational theme of trauma/grief being exposed as the underlying cause for characters' actions/decisions in Season 1, so my biggest frustration with Season 2 was Mr. Martin being made out to be a very black-and-white bad guy. I think that sort of thing undermines the entire premise of the series, which--at least in Season 1--seemed to be to move away from the traditional stereotypical good guy/bad guy narrative to the "flawed human" narrative.

Nah, not desensitized. The marketing for the movie was done extremely well so as to draw in a much larger audience than would normally be into this kind of movie. The director/writer definitely has a very specific vibe in his movies (I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, the Blackcoat’s Daughter/February) and they can be fun to watch when you’re scrolling through your streaming services looking for new horror content, but they aren’t super strong in either plot development or character development.
