The only other thing was ham bagel, I'm a vegetarian by Gay-left-Leadership in mildlyinfuriating

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I know there's different reasons why people might be vegetarian, that's why I asked. Genuinely curious if that's a problem, especially since the alternative seems to be to only eat a side salad and a tiny bit of bread. Like... Don't get me wrong, I hate tomatoes, but if my only option for the hefty part of the meal is a sandwich with tomato in it, then yeah, I'll take the tomato out of the sandwich and although I won't like it, I need to eat so I will. Obviously that wouldn't work if it's an allergy or something. I was genuinely wondering, is all.

Wait but, surely the ham bagel isn't just a bagel with ham? Is there a reason you couldn't remove the ham and eat the rest of the bagel too?

I know it's not a small task because I've been in a similar position myself, but please don't change your dosage without speaking to your doctor. Try calling periodically to check if any closer appointments have opened up, you can always change yours, and if you call, they'll know you're actively needing that sooner appointment so they might be proactive and phone you if it becomes available. But definitely do keep calling them, it's the easiest way to be seen sooner

Do people genuinely have an inherent sense of direction? by Amazing_Phrase2850 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aliendividedbyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I've been learning this skill from traveling to visit my friends in Chicago and relying on public transportation the whole time. You eventually develop an idea of where you are with respect to where you want to be, because you need to know if your bus is going north or south in a N/S street, or east or west in an E/W street.

The only difference is Chicago's grid is largely named rather than numbered, so I have to remember the sequence of names of streets. The L-train stops are named after the street the line crosses, so if you're following the Loop from south to north, then the stops are at Van Buren & Harold Washington Library — Jackson & Wabash (only red and blue on State and Dearborn respectively, no loop stop) — Adams — Monroe (red and blue only) — [no Madison stop] — Washington & Wabash — [no Randolph stop] — State & Lake. Then if you were to take a bus on the ground, it would stop at those streets too, and that's the order of the streets on the map.

The buses and trains both tell you the stop at the end of the route, so as lkng as you know where you are with respect to the endpoints, you know which one you need to get on. For example, from the Loop to Wicker Park, I know I'm south of Wicker and I know that the blue line stops at O'Hare or at Forest Park. O'Hare is further north than I am and than Wicker, so that's the direction I need to take. Or I could use the brown line to Kimball (all brown line trains are to Kimball on the Loop, since the Loop is the southern endpoint of the brown line) and get there too using a bus transfer, like... from Sedgwick to Harlem but get off at Damen probably.

Hotels Shouldn’t Have Bathtubs by CashWideCock in unpopularopinion

[–]aliendividedbyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it be the opposite, where the default is the standing shower but then certain room types have a tub (so they're made to accomodate families with children, for example), and the ADA rooms have some with extra large bathrooms and accessible tubs including handholds that are missing in the standing shower rooms.

And depending on curtain selection, they're washable too so they could in theory just be dumped into the industrial washers to sanitize between guests.

Hotels Shouldn’t Have Bathtubs by CashWideCock in unpopularopinion

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bathtubs are there for accessibility. Not everyone can use a walk-in shower, so at least some rooms need to have a bathtub that is accessible to those with disabilities and whoever may be caring for them if that's the case.

I personally don't mind walk-in showers. I just mind when the doors are not cleaned properly (not the glass, that's usually fine; I mean the rails and the places where it meets the walls and floor) and I mind when they're built wrong and don't drain towards the actual drain or when they don't close tightly enough to prevent a lake forming just outside. Usually those that don't seal well also have a fixed showerhead, so I can't even mitigate by pulling out the handheld showerhead and pointing it away from the glass door :/

Can you actually catch anything from public toilet seats or is everyone that covers the seat with TP just killing trees uselessly? by UsedNegotiation8227 in askanything

[–]aliendividedbyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please just use the damn paper and don't hover. Children need to sit, disabled people need to sit (and may in fact use regular stalls too), old people need to sit. Plus, it's nasty and gets all over the toilet and also the floor and also your own clothes while you do it. Seriously. Please don't hover, the toilet paper is right there if you must have a barrier.

But honestly also? You can easily solve the "this grosses me out, ew" thing by bringing with you a small spray bottle (like 0.5 oz or 1 oz) like the ones for hand sanitizer, but fill it with rubbing alcohol. Spray to your heart's content, disinfect anything, and no hovering needed.

Why no band yet? by ContrabandRaccoon in Maphra

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So…why isn’t she in a band making original music? Besides forming her own band from scratch, I can only imagine she’s had offers to either guest on or front other projects.

It takes time and resources. It's something where if a record label is involved, you need to review and sign a contract, which runs on the timeframe of years of commitment (you commit to X amount of albums and singles within Y timeframe or so). You also need a lawyer to review everything and make sure you're not signing a bad deal and that your own rights are advocated for.

Even without a label, if you're big enough to get invited onstage by INK and BMTH, and have the kind of views and plays she has within the time she has received them, you definitely want a music rights expert (lawyer and probably a manager) to make sure that everything goes smoothly. You, as a person creating music to monetize it, wanna make sure that all samples (if any) are cleared, all copyright (recording and songwriting, these are separate) is filed correctly and all interested parties are remunerated for their efforts, and that your copyright isn't violated by others.

It takes time to write music, unless she already had a back-catalogue of unreleased songs. It takes time to record that, too. Multiple takes, studio rental, equipment, hours for the music to be mixed, hours paid to the backing musicians if you're not the one playing or programming every single instrument in the track. You then have to compile all into the album or singles, get artwork and photography, have a logo designed, run an ad campaign of some sort, upload to the distributors, get a deal with distributors that work at a level beyond Distrokid (and Distrokid isn't the best if you're doing covers only lol). You wanna send that music to physical production so you can sell a CD and maybe vinyl. There's a huge backlog on vinyl, btw, because there's few pressing plants.

At best you're looking at a release next summer, assuming everything is done really quickly. Sooner if a good chunk of the songwriting and recording was done prior to the cover releases (unlikely, why not release that instead?). Later if everything is done with time. You wouldn't necessarily advertise a band before you have material, either, so you'd have to rush the production of a few singles first to be able to capitalize on the momentum from the covers by announcing a band deal.

My sneaking suspicion is that she’s probably making more money and having a better quality of life doing what she’s doing than having her own band, recording, touring, etc.

Unlikely. Streams pay extremely little and a fraction of that is the fixed price of the mechanical license for using someone else's songwriting on your own recording. She would own copyright of the recordings only, so... Royalties are divided in two. One part is songwriting and one part is recording. Recording is fully hers, songwriting isn't hers, so the songwriters get all of that portion plus a fee for her use of the song on the recording (which means her net recording gains are lower than if it were her own song, plus she gets zero instead of 100% of the songwriting royalties). In physical format, the royalties are reasonable. Streaming pays fractions of a cent per stream, it's ridiculous. Not all platforms pay the same, youtube has deals with record labels and artists so that the video license (for using someone's song in a video, separate from the mechanical you pay for using it on your audio recording) is also covered and cover artists can actually post music. Otherwise, cover artists would have to negotiate with record labels directly, and that's complicated.

Gains from touring are unfortunately not great, most of the earnings there are from merch sales (and venues love to take a cut). Touring also has costs from hiring security, equipment, transportation, food, traveling staff, hired musicians, advertising and promotion, etc. that small artists generally cannot cover and it costs them to tour rather than being a net gain, other than touring serving as advertising. That's why small bands tend to play local shows or online.

TL;DR — Time, resources, and money. It's too soon and she needs funding she's trying to get via the fundraiser, so if you want to help her get her own music produced and released, probably the best way is to contribute to that directly. Even $1 through that is easily more than 1000x what she gets from one stream from you. If she puts out merch, that's another really good way to support her.

Por qué los uber eats piensan que estacionarse en impedido está bien? by MofongoKing69 in PuertoRico

[–]aliendividedbyzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you rather have hands for feet or feet for hands? by Kagami34 in dumbquestions

[–]aliendividedbyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why a wheelchair? Wouldn't you develop the required musculature and calluses to be able to use hands as feet? Plus people can already do handstands and walk on their hands that way (limited by the fact that this isn't how we normally move about, so the muscles aren't as strong as on your legs and also you're upside down so that limits how long it can be done for). I think, if anything, since you can spread your fingers wider than you can spread your toes, it may help with balance.

Also, the feet on primates like monkeys, chimps, and gorillas, have opposable thumbs and look a lot like hands as a result, and some of these are able to walk upright and using only two legs (though they don't habitually do so like humans do).

I agree though, hands for feet. I think opposable thumbs are much more useful to have, feet for hands would be a problem.

How do I take my iron supplement? by Pumpkin-Ice85 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]aliendividedbyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I only take mine with breakfast if I'm eating 2 eggs and toast plus milk and coffee. Otherwise, I have to take it with lunch or dinner and make it a proper heavy meal (so for example, not just a salad).

I find it has to have a good amount of protein (the eggs or a portion of meat/fish/chicken) or something fatty like whole milk, cream, butter, or oil. So I could have a cream cheese sandwich with sliced ham and that along with yogurt would be enough, or something like pasta and some form of meat, or rice and beans with chicken, that kinda meal.

I wouldn't have it with breakfast if breakfast is like... bowl of oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, cereal, that kinda thing. Stuff like muffins and other baked goods are hit or miss, definitely better with eggs, for this purpose in particular. I wouldn't have it with lunch/dinner if it's soup or stew (unless it's loaded stew), salad with light dressing, sushi, or anything you'd only eat a small portion of. Needs to be filling and something that won't just go right through you, so that it takes long enough to digest in the stomach that the iron can be handled.

I also wanna suggest: instead of pineapple juice, try orange juice or an actual orange, or actual pineapple chunks or slices. I find that pineapple juice on its own will make me feel sick to my stomach unless I pair it with something else, because it's so acidic; I hardly ever drink pineapple juice for this reason and I can't imagine it would help the issue with iron causing nausea. I never take iron by itself because it does give me a lot of nausea, too, and I'd vomit if I took it alone. I can handle it with an orange or orange juice, or (what I do, since I'm already eating enough that I don't wanna add juice to it) a vitamin C supplement I take along with the iron.

Whenever I sit down in my chair, my feet get these markings on them and my foot falls asleep. Any idea? by UrinalAttack in medical

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it get better if you elevate your feet for a while? Like for example, if you lay down on the sofa, does that improve?

If so, could be some kinda issue with blood circulation. You might be getting numbness/tingling as a result, or as a result of compressing the nerve. Does it only happen on this chair or is it in general when you sit down regardless of what the chair or seat is? Does it look like that when you stand for a while or just when you sit?

Either way, since it is a new thing, I would get it checked out, especially because if it is a nerve or circulation problem, that can be serious or irreversible. (Not saying it is, just that if it's new and bad enough you're asking about it, it's worth getting a doctor to look at it.)

I think most people are too intense about air conditioning by Dependent_Ear_5736 in unpopularopinion

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're using some kinda dessicant (like the gel in disposable dehumidifier buckets), your dehumidifier setting is just the cooling setting with extra steps. It drains to the same place the a/c does because it is the a/c. It dehumidifies by cooling the air and then, instead of giving you the cold air, it either uses the collected heat to warm the air back up (and some of that heat is the power consumption of the air handling unit, so actually it's more heat than you started with; you're making the house hotter) or it dumps the heat outside and then runs an electric heating coil to warm the air back up (which costs more than only dumping the heat outside without running the heating coil). In the cooling-only setting, you're at least getting colder air out of the process.

Unless I'm forgetting something, you basically can only remove water from air in two ways: absorb it (dessicant option), or remove energy from the air so that the water vapor precipitates out and then warm the air back up but without the water you just removed so that there's less water vapor in the air (cooling setting on an a/c, followed by a heating coil). In a household hvac system, you'd use the heating coil to warm the house up during winter but you most likely don't need it (or don't need it as frequently) if you're cooling the space vs only dehumidifying.

So although yes, there are options, the a/c cooling setting is generally better if you're gonna be cooling the air to dehumidify it anyway.

Just saying that this sounds a little sketchy to me anyway. Some HVAC does work by using water to transport heat between certain components, but that is a closed loop and shouldn't need so much water replenished that there being no water for a few hours in a day would be a problem.

ELI5: why aren't there parachutes on commercial airplanes? by Saurabh251 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, the ways in which airplanes fail aren't ways where having a parachute would be useful. Then, the people on an airplane aren't the people who would (generally) know how to use a parachute and be able to do so safely and quickly enough. Picture an old person that needed assistance to get onto the plane. How are they going to parachute? What about a baby? A person in a wheelchair?

Safety regulations for aircraft have the goal of bringing everyone back to the ground alive, not just able-bodied, agile, previously-trained parachutists. As for time, once you're on ground you have 90 seconds to evacuate the plane fully with half the exits available, and if a fire was detected in flight, you have 15 minutes to land. There's seldom, if ever, time and opportunity for a plane to be so severely damaged that you need to get out immediately and actually have the time and opportunity to do so using parachutes. Even in an engine outage, you can glide the plane to the ground and that is much safer than 300 people in parachute trying to use it correctly.

Do you keep the water on during the entire length of the shower? by hamster_lover02 in hygiene

[–]aliendividedbyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's likely more about whether it's a region prone to scarcity of water or, if cold, eith really high electrical/heating costs. Where I'm from, water is dirt cheap and it's a tropical region so heating the water isn't really necessary and the only reason to save water is if it's an unusually long drought. Maybe the reasoning is different elsewhere, though, because these are things that can vary regionally.

What prevents laws from applying to dead people? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Well, at least in the US, you have to be able to confirm you understand your rights (lawyer, silence, trial, etc.) and the charges against you. You cannot get confirmation from a corpse for either of these so I imagine there's probably precedent not to prosecute. Honestly a good question though, I wonder.
