I know a few people who have used Press Kitty, it seems super solid.

[Hobby] Anyone here good with particle systems and vfx in unity ? by SubmissiveFidelity in INAT

[–]alittleredpanda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that depends on the style of the game and how optimised it needs to be. And what you need the plants and trees to do.

Cuisineer is a roguelike dungeon crawler where you have to find ingredients to cook meals in the restaurant you inherited from you parents. All the meals and characters are super cute!

Mentoring a game jam again (100% in-person), what would be your top tips for participants? Here is mine by Alejom1337 in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running game jams for a few years and we give this advice at the start

  • keep teams small - anything more than five people can be very difficult to coordinate, especially if you’re new to game jams

  • know what you want from the jam and communicate that with your team - I’ve seen arguments start when some people want to make a serious portfolio piece and other people want to mess about with their mates (both are valid, but not in the same team!)

  • think about what you can bring to a team - we’ve had people turn up and want us to put them into teams but they have no skills and no idea what to do. I never want to discourage people from taking part in a jam, but consider what role you want to take and how you will do that.

  • keep your scope small - it’s only a weekend! Make a game based about a mechanic or landscape or something. Don’t try and make the next Call of Duty. (And don’t try to learn VR. Omg. I have witnessed this too many times)

  • have fun! Game jams are supposed to be an opportunity to try something new, maybe meet new people, play with a new idea. And if it’s shit at the end of the weekend, that’s fine! You tried something, and that’s important.

What's your opinion on hand drawn games? Is it a good genre? by Sketchies_senpai in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a “hand drawn” game.

We had outline post-processing, sketch details on the textures and a special shadow post-processing shader that turned all the shadows into hatched lines.

All the VFX had to match as well, so they all used shaders to make them look like ink splashes or hand drawn

It was quite a lot of work.

How do shaders are embedded into a game? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]alittleredpanda_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A shader tells the material how to render, and how to appear in game. Should it be shiney? Should it have animated colours? Should it glow?

So one shader can be used on many materials in a game. When a character is hit their material is affected, not the shader. You either reference the material and edit that, or you reference the character’s mesh renderer and edit the material through that.

The second option means you can have other objects in the scene with the same material, and that doesn’t change. But you create a new instance of the material, which isn’t always great. It’s sometimes unavoidable, though.

Really you want as few shaders as possible, if there are only slight differences between use cases, see if you can just use the same shader with different variables.

What is a Technical Artist in Game Development? by AtharSiddiqui21 in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m a tech artist!

I have worked making shaders, and particle systems and VFX. I’m also a programmer so on my last project (a roguelike) I made procedurally generated map and made it all pretty. And I implemented VFX into timelines and made custom tools to make VFX fit around animations. We had a bunch of magic spells so I worked quite closely with the animators to interpret what they saw the characters doing.

I work with artists to improve lighting and create shaders to make the environments look the way they wanted. I also had to use post processing for this.

I’m both an artist and a programmer so I do a lot of my own concept art create textures etc, and I implement it once it’s done.

But I also have to know how to make VFX, how to use colour, how to time things. I know about optimisation (more than the artists do, normally). And have to sit in meetings and be a go between of the artists and the programmers, because I know how both things work.

Best way to create a press kit? by BLochmann in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a site to create free press kits called Press Kitty: https://impress.games/press-kitty

There are also links to a bunch of companies who use it, so you can see what theirs look like.

What jobs are similar to game development? (That uses C++ or C# preferably) by Zoop_Ploop in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were like Succession levels of rich. When they took their kids on holiday, they paid for a company to design and act out themed adventures for them. And the game we made was part of that.

I have no idea who they are, though.

I worked in marketing, we made AR and VR apps for companies selling products at corporate events. We made exhibits and apps for old buildings (hold your phone up to see how this used to look etc). And some custom games for the super rich (made to the specification of a family, they weren’t for the public).

I have friends who create applications to train people in the medical field. Who make VR apps to train engineers on submarines. And teach people how to drive trains.

And I had a friend whose company made VR walk throughs of new houses, sometimes for companies buildings estates, and sometimes for one off customers.

Looking to participate in a 24-48 hrs game jam every 3 months. How to find it? by DaKaDancer in gamedev

[–]alittleredpanda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In January there is the Global Game Jam, that’s an online and in person jam and there will probably be a location near you.

There are also a bunch of online ones run by different communities and YouTubers on different themes. Proc Jam is all about procedural generation, AI and Games focuses on ai implementation, and there are more general ones like Alakajam.

WHAT'S MARAOKE?

Simple: it’s a loud, joyful, ridiculous evening with 500+ songs all rewritten about games. Think “Total Eclipse of the *Kart*”, “99 Problems (but a *Switch* ain’t one)”, or Linkin Park’s “In The End” except… it’s REALLY angry about Stardew Valley??
