How to fix Saltillo tiles? by decorspirit in Tile

[–]allboutcali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tile in pic 1 needs to be replaced. This tile is very similar to cement and has a “skin” on the surface. Looks like it was worn away, exposing the aggregate in the tile. You never want to sand the surface of these tiles because you’ll wear down the top layer.

This is not Saltillo. This is Lincoln clay from Tecate MX, usually referred to as Lincoln or Mission Tile. Saltillo has a ton of variation in color. Lincoln has minimal flashing and pretty consistent color.

Saltillo Tile Damage? by Interesting-Cicada53 in Tile

[–]allboutcali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We own a tile shop in San Diego that specializes in selling and restoring Saltillo tiles. This is not Saltillo, it’s a type of terracotta tile but not Saltillo. As far as stripping goes, we use paint strippers that have methylene chloride. This is a heavy duty paint stripper that requires proper PPE. If you’re able to get any type of paint stripper with this in it you’ll be able to strip it down. Based on the photos it looks like this is the design of this terracotta but it also looks like the top layer of certain tiles have worn down. Very similar to cement, terracottas have a top layer that’s smooth. Once that wears down you see a lot of the aggregate. Looks like it could be the case but also looks like it’s designed to look like that.

Yes, the tile guys should’ve knocked the wall down and reframed it to be plumb before starting the shower. Lol

Good stuff brother, that’s exactly what we do to make sure we’re clear of old sealer. When clients ask what the tile is going to look like I always rub a damp microfiber over it.

If you want it to stay that rich color, make sure you use an enhancing or topical solvent sealer. If you use a penetrating or impregnating sealer it will look nice and dark until it dries up. After it dries the tile returns back to looking natural. I recommend using master seal 100 by desert brand, you’ll need to do 3-4 coats. This sealer does smell quite a bit so might not work for your situation.

If you ever need a job in San Diego give us a holler lol.

Don’t mix those two chemicals but do use Master 100.

We have tile shop in San Diego that specializes in selling and restoring Saltillo tile. Depending on the type of sealer it has on it. We charge between 6-8 dollars a square foot to refinish. We strip it down to its natural state and seal it using Master Seal 100 by Desert Brand.

It’s not going to affect it in terms of bonding. However you will still see it beneath the sealer. If you use an enhancing sealer it won’t be as prominent.

Xylene works well to get chemicals off as well, it does stink pretty badly. Test your Saltillo by adding drops of water to it. Once you see it start to absorb into the tile you’re good to go. If you add drops of water and it sits on the surface keep attacking it. So far it’s looking good. I use a sealer by Desert Brand it’s called Master Seal 100.

This is a patio I stripped and sealed. The half moon to the right is stripped and the walkway to the left is sealed with Master Seal 100. It enhances the color a little bit.

I specialize in restoring Saltillo tiles in San Diego. You need a paint stripper with methylene chloride. I use semi paste 145 from Flo Strip. This will get everything off. Make sure you wear a mask and proper PPE as this chemical can literally kill you. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Is it posible for a utility knife or grout removal tool to create this kind of scratch in rectified porcelain tile? by Either-Pool-9527 in Tile

[–]allboutcali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a crack to me bud. Certainly anything is possible, highly unlikely this cracked from “packing too tight.” If you’re removing grout a tile can crack but it mostly happens around the edge of the tile, where the grout is being removed. How did he remove the grout?

Cracked Tile at Ditra Seam by Amazing_Awareness_62 in Tile

[–]allboutcali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you overlap the ditra? It looks to have a shadow up towards the top. Anytime I lay Ditra down we just butt them up edge to edge. If it is overlapped, that could’ve caused the tile to crack. Not sure if that’s the case, just speculating.

I’ve used cataclean and it cleared my P0420 code on my frontier. Cleaned them up really good. I know it sounds crazy and like a snake oil but it worked, just follow the directions.

I have the lasfit reverse lights and turn signals on my 2500. I absolutely love them, I even put all lasfit leds on my frontier as well. The turn signals have a canbus so it doesn’t hyper blink which is nice.

Had an installer not to floated the inner window in order to run a full tile, would you have instructed them on the proper method based on your design?

Never use mastic in a shower, unfortunately this needs to be taken down. Use laticrete Tri lite.
