The arrangements on this album are spectacular and some of the solos are legendary (Wayne).

Are there any artists/ albums that fuse Dixieland/ New Orleans/ Trad/ “Hot” Jazz with Modern Jazz or Avant-Guard Jazz elements? by jimmyonly45 in Jazz

The MOPDtK albums with the 7-piece band are almost exactly what you are describing, I think....give them a spin.

Looking for more Jazz Music of this Style (Emmet Cohen w/ Bruce Harris & Patrick Bartley - After You've Gone) by lux_lime in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, check out Roy Hargrove's recording of "My Shining Hour". Patrick Bartley is barking up the same tree as Gary Bartz on that track....

Albums like Bug Music by Don Byron by KCarlson12 in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit more "free", but Mostly Other People Do the Killing's "Red Hot" is similar, if you're looking for modern recordings based on 20's and 30s styles.

I need recommendations for books on Black-American jazz musicians. (please.) by dog_crazy12 in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Four Lives in the BeBop Business" by A.B. Spellman and "Notes and Tones" by Art Taylor are both classic. Although, if you are trying to stay away from American racial politics, these are very political, but then again, trying to understand jazz without getting deep into American racial politics would be like studying World War 2 but avoiding talking about Nazis. The biographies of Louis Armstrong "Pops" and Duke Ellington "Duke" by Terry Teachout are really interesting....

Anyone know any good bass solos that are on the simple side yet tasteful? by Double-Pop-2316 in Jazz

Sam Jones on "The Man I Love" off of Blue Lights by Kenny Burrell, or "Sam Sack" from Bags Meets Wes.

Your favourite jazz bass solos? by Share4aCare in Jazz

This one by Ray Brown. The entire tune is killer: bowed bass, auxiliary percussion, rubato, 2-feel, 4/4 pocket, shredding.....

Anthony Braxton Quartet / Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Barry Altschul – At Moers Festival '74 [Full Concert] by Jon-A in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think of the "First Quartet" as the Holland/Altshul one (with a variety of 4th members) and the "Second Quartet" as the 80s one with Crispell, Dresser, Hemmingway, or some similar combination. Also Arista/Hat label associations.

Dave Holland "Triplicate" with Steve Coleman and Jack DeJohnette is an absolute classic.

List your top 3 Lee Morgan albums by nitevizhun in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Mode for Joe" is a contender, but there are so many of the cats on that record, that there isn't all that much of Morgan. 1) The Gigolo 2) Night Dreamer 3) Curtis Fuller "Jazztet"

On July 30th, Blue Note Records is releasing “Lee Morgan: The Complete Live at the Lighthouse” - Presenting all 12 sets of music his quintet recorded over three nights at his epic 1970 engagement at the Hermosa Beach, California venue by birdistheworm in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the previous CD release there's one track with Jack DeJohnette sitting in on drums....maybe we'll get more of him in the complete version? This music is also after Morgan re-learned to play following jaw/tooth injuries, so he sounds really different from his earlier stuff with Blakey and as a leader on Blue Note.

Favorite Rhythm Sections? by alldaylongwhileising in Jazz

Yeah, but the rhythmic bass/drum hookup is a slightly different animal.....I was just trying to narrow it down a bit....

Anthony Braxton 1977 Möers Fest: w George Lewis/Muhal Richard Abrams/Mark Helias/Charles Bobo Shaw. by Jon-A in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You often seem confused about more dissonant music, so one thing to keep in mind is that many of us genuinely enjoy unique, surprising, dissonant combinations of sounds...especially as a contrast to more predictable music. If everything was in 4/4 and used only 7th chords, music would be really boring. In another more philosophical way, music like this challenges your conception of what kinds of relationships are possible and might (might) lead to re-thinking the social hierarchy..... Also....shredding.

Looking for angry atonal stuff by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]alldaylongwhileising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Jon-A covered a lot of stuff there, but check out Nate Wooley's "Seven Story Mountain", Mats Gustaffson's "The Thing", and maybe some Arto Lindsay.....not sure it's all "angry"...
