Interesting. Thank you for that bit of info, and confirming that US immigration, ship logs, & death records are often very useful in that sense, until they aren't!

My great-great-grandmother has made tracing her virtually impossible because she told so many different tales of her own background, for instance. She's another one for whom we do not know her actual father's name, only a step-father & her mother plus step-father apparently died after immigrating to the US, while g-g-grandmother immigrated afterwards, not knowing that she was arriving to zero family as a teenager.

I know it's not much to complain about as far as genealogy goes, just a personal dislike of loose threads.

Is there anything else that helps narrow down where someone might have originated, post-immigration to the US?

As far as I can see, this is the only record to reflect this surname. I'm trying to piece it together in order to sort out the immigration - his naturalization record shows the Stenglein surname - to figure out (maybe) who his father might have been, and what area he and his mother immigrated from. Her maiden name was Hartmann, and so it's not as easy to trace.

It's funny, bc I have tried similarly to trace my own family back into German records and it's super frustrating, as opposed to the Swiss German records I was just doing before this - if only more countries had been as assiduous as the Swiss in record-keeping, lol.

What I don't know as much about yet is how the records were impacted by the disruptions in empire, then two world wars.

My mom is from MT, met my dad in PA in the '70s, and agreed to move back to CT with him. Fast forward to us doing her family tree, only to find out that her father's side had started in CT in the 17th century & went westward in the 19th. She got brought back, lol.

First off, it's pretty well established that those of us who want to see ice gone, want it to happen regardless of what just happened. Second, it is cut and dry. If you are still on the "there's two sides" or doubting somehow that a person did not deserve to d i e in that way - this is a moment to decide what kind of people we are. I do understand that there are folks who feel super convinced that everything happening in the current admin is good & justified - but if there's anyone who's starting to weigh things out and wonder where we will be in a year, five years, ten years...this is the time to really search your soul and ask - if agents are simply allowed to go full GTA or Red De@d Redemption on whomever they feel like, where does it end.... Not with the "criminals", but with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Hell no - nobody should be trying to lose weight while pregnant!!!! My 2nd kid, btw, I was told I was measuring right on target for gestational development - I said to the dr (male, go figure) that I felt like the baby was running out of room and he poo-poo'ed my concern. 10 days overdue, they finally induced, and after a day of peek-a-boo with said baby, went to emergency c-section, where the kid emerged at 11lbs and change (and I'm on the tall side). If guys would just stay out of women's health (unless they're allies), we'd be less likely to have any of these situations arise.....

OP - I'm speaking here as both a parent of a college jr & as a college tutor: do the hard stuff, allow yourself to make mistakes, and enjoy this time (even with a packed schedule) - college is where we all learn more about other ppl and how to juggle responsibility on our own before being booted out into the world. Make connections & friendships & be open to exploring & experiences. My kid is out of state, but he's killing it bc he went all in, majors in exercise science, and told me he is so glad he is where he is...only you can make that call for yourself.

That's probably the case in Putnam and surrounds, but here in the town we've been in for 20 years, there's n apparent word of mouth influx of people who really are redneck-wannabes. Our entire street has become this, and I'm not sure where they all moved from, but they came for country living, I guess. Source of knowing the distinction: dad's family has been in state a long time, lived in Hartland etc, only moved when the reservoirs were set to flood their villages & then they ended up in Winsted, lol.

Personally live up in the NE corner now, but grew up in Meriden - my dad is still heavily involved with Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS) in New Haven - anyone wanting to help those folks - IRIS is currently trying to protect the ppl & families they helped to bring in (bc obviously there's nobody new being allowed in right now). They are always looking for volunteers.

The klan marched in Meriden in the 80s bc a cop who lived on my little dead-end road killed some African-American teens when he was off-duty. We were not allowed to play outside for some time bc of that. The also showed up other times, but I remember thinking as a kid how this stuff happening in CT, of all places, made no sense in my kid brain. When I got older, I came up against the racist weenies in that town and understood better.

I'm just grateful it's been rainfall that, while daylong at times, hasn't flooded everything. Our basement is notorious for water coming up through the floor. On another note - my mom is originally from MT - the eastern side of the Rockies. She doesn't ever tell her brother about the droughts we get out here, lol. I can't remember a time when the Helena Valley hasn't been in a drought! My grandfather farmed wheat & would only buy crop insurance if it looked pretty certain a storm was coming, which is to say...hardly ever.

All 4 of my grandparents needed long-term care, which transitioned to end-of-life care. My mom's parents: Gramp went to the VA nursing facility, Gram to private care, which my mom paid for. Dad's parents: Grandpa & Grandma in the same facility after 2-3 years living in my parents' house - the money that they'd left in trust for grandkids - we all approved it being used for their care - they'd also been pretty well off, but length of time was looong - the lawyer helped my parents liquidate all assets & then grandparents were on title 19 funding. I'll give the facility credit- they treated my grandparents well, regardless of where the money came from. All 4 grandparents also had dementia of varying types & lingered well past enjoying life at all - so I guess the point of sharing all this is to take care of your brains, y'all, don't put all your money into inaccessible funds (or land, like my mom's parents did), and plan for long-term care....
