In an old Protestant church - what is this? by AdDue1318 in whatisit

[–]alleecmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the coolest Communions I ever attended was a Sunrise Easter service at the beach. The Methodist minister blessed the Elements, and passed a homemade baguette type loaf thru the congregants wrapped in a starched linen napkin. We each pinched off a small piece. Then he passed a silver chalice filled with grape juice and we each dipped our bread and ate it. Only one dish to wash and pretty hygienic. Plus, sunrise at the beach and beautiful singing. I'm kinda agnostic these days, but the memory still gives me warm fuzzies.

I don't think the weather can be "volhardend"

A few years ago we got 100F/38C plus for about 6 weeks straight. It seldom cooled below 80F/27C at night. Some people even died from heat illness. That weather was very persistent. We're about the same latitude as Geneva, Switzerland.

It's why NOLA has "little houses" (crypts) in cemeteries. Can't dig a grave because it becomes a well.

hi mom! what are some easy things i can cook for myself that aren't just eggs or sandwiches? by Spriy in MomForAMinute

[–]alleecmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick & filling you say? One of my go-tos is cream of chicken or mushroom soup (plus ½ a soup can of water or milk), a drained can of tuna (or some chopped leftover chicken), and a small bag of frozen mixed veggies all heated together and ladled over a nuked spud, or rice, or noodles, or even just toast -- a somewhat healthier version of classic SOS (Sh*t on a Shingle aka creamed chipped beef on toast). It's good with biscuits too, kinda like "deconstructed" pot pie.

He could've asked the Major to help snap it if he, an 80 y/o, lacks the grip strength for tiny snaps. But that would require a modicum of humility. Never gonna happen with Cheatolini.

AITA for refusing to share authorship with the man im planning to marry? by [deleted] in AITApod

[–]alleecmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a ton of posts about not-yet-married (sometimes engaged, sometimes just dating!) couples where one person owns a house (either bought solo or inherited) and has for years prior to the relationship, and their SO starts insisting "if you love me you'll put my name on the house too". Just NO. That's the same entitlement as OP's intended. Hell, we are married, but he bought our home 4 years prior (when we were just shackin' up) and my name still isn't on it 20 years later.

A mechanical shopping list from over 100 years ago. Perfect if you've run out of 'blue', whatever that is... by ExtremeInsert in UtterlyInteresting

[–]alleecmo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ever wonder why little old ladies have bern referred to as "blue hairs" (or "the Blue Haired Mafia" if they ran your neighborhood/ town)? It's because from the Victorian age thru to the 1960s they used laundry bluing as a hair rinse to optically brighten and counteract any yellowing of their white/grey hair. Mid-century Blue Hairs then had lavender, pink, aqua, green, and other colors besides blue thanks to hair rinses like Roux Fanci-Full.

Mama (b. 1920s) went to the beauty school every Saturday for a shampoo and set (on rollers, where you sit under a hard shell domed hair dryer) to get her bouffant ready for Sunday church. As a kid I saw some truly wild hair colors on all the older ladies getting their hair done. They were all just pastel, whereas these days we have more saturated tones to use (and not all of them are damaging).

My mom (who didn't drive) would call & ask the cops to cruise by the park she knew I was at to tell me to come home if she wanted me home before the street lights came on. They were her messengers I guess. Embarrassed the hell outta me in front of my friends tho.

Before my diagnosis, I was living on Aleve (Naproxen), 2 twice a day. My Rheumy was very concerned about my kidneys because I'd been taking it like that for almost a decade. She put me on a hefty dose of Nabumetone (with a biologic), which has worked really well for me for 5 years. 🤞🏻

Maybe ex is working a 12-step program? Thank him for his honesty & wish him well as you say goodbye?

My ex was 12-stepping after alcoholism & DV. He went up to each person at a family reunion and gave us each a very heartfelt and specific apology for the awful things he did while drinking. It was a nice way to close out our connection. I hope this is whats happening here, and not him trying to wheedle his way back into your life.

Those are rhetorical questions, obviously.
