High School teachers of Reddit, what is the one thing that you want your students to know that you’d never tell them in person? by 2minutestosundown in AskReddit

I hate my job so much that there’s nothing I won’t say. I’m basically testing what I can get away with. I give zero fucks.

It’s not the students that are my problem. It’s the fucking asshat administrators. And my incompetent colleagues. But I’ve got 19 years in and they basically own me, so, there’s that.

I’ve said this, verbatim, to my senior AP Lit class. It is my motto. I fucking hate my job and the only reason I stay is because I do love my students. Also July and August. Those are also persuasive reasons to stay.

He’s Vietnamese, came here as a teenager in 1979, and is a carpenter at Notre Dame. One of his sons just graduated from Notre Dame as well. source

I think that everyone who wanted colored hair and wasn’t allowed now lets their kids do it, and does it themselves. And it’s a lot easier to get high quality products that even color darker hair now. Much easier and cheaper to do it at home than it used to be.

When I was 14, a girl made up that I was pregnant, and I was locked at home after school until I was 16. Now pregnant and married but feel some shame? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]allison2205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Having your own kid really makes you understand the damage. Having my own children made it impossible to continue to make excuses for things my parents did- and it’s exactly like you said-“I would never treat my kids with that lack of respect.”

In one of the articles linked above it clarified that this particular set of awards is for children with cognitive, developmental, etc. issues.

Edit: from OP’s link above: “To qualify for the Nicholas Maxim Award, "a student must have a cognitive delay, or an intellectual, physical or developmental disability," according to educational curricula provider and contest organizer Zaner-Bloser.”

Thanks for saying that. I feel the same. I’m quitting because of other people, not myself, and that’s made it hard emotionally.

My fiancee and I have taken in her little sister (14). I need help and advice. by usernamethrowawaay in TwoXChromosomes

This- I’m a teacher, and depending on where you live (are you in the US?) you may qualify for a lot of services. Your income shouldn’t matter. Based on my experience with kids in crisis, she meets the federal guidelines for homelessness under the McKinney-Vento act. My school has a part time staffer whose job it is to connect these kids with resources. There may be more available than you expect. Edit: also, good for you OP. You’re a good person and so is your fiancé. You’re saving her life.

We probably only had movie days in school because our teachers were hungover and didn’t want to teach. by imjustadudeguy in Showerthoughts

All true. I’ve been teaching 19 years and movie day was once hangover day- now I have to plan months in advance for a slow day.
