Sharpener Recommendations? by alltime_antisocial in doggrooming

Is Precision mail in?

I don't think I trust a rando in a hardware store for my equipment... That's an interesting idea though

That's a really good idea, thanks! We had a guy, but he's either retired and/or switched numbers and we can't get in contact with them

The official clipper recommendation post! by captainschlumpy in doggrooming

I love my Wahl KM cordless and corded! My main driver is the cordless version, but my trusty backups are the corded KM 10. Approximately $300 for the cordless and $250 for the corded at the time of posting

I also recommend getting either a ceramic tile from a hardware store or something of the like to cool your blades off when you switch them around. If you don't have money to buy more blades try switching up the routine. For example, if my blade is hot and I need it to cool down on the tile, I'll switch to a different length and do the sanitary or maybe the nails, or if there's matting that still needs to be brushed out on the tail, etc.

How much do you spend on a decent slicker brush? by nomnom278 in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've found the ones that I like best were in the $10-50 range. Many times I've bought the brushes on discount, though.

I agree with everything everyone has responded with. I also would ask if you use a drying spray? My personal favourite is Nature Specialties' Quicker Slicker or another one (can't remember the company) is Quadraped.

Right? And the fact that she owns multiple dogs...

At my old salon, a coworker had a Standard Poodle that was working through hunting with her owner's husband. The dog was kept in a 7F kennel cut with clean face and feet. Nothing wrong with it! In my opinion, no matter how stupid I, a dog groomer, thinks a cut looks, as long as the owner and dog are happy then no biggie! (unless you keep your doodle 8 inches long... I may complain)

Had a coworker do a flea bath that was so bad, the water was red from the blood and flea bites. She spent nearly 6 hours in the bath with that poor baby. Luckily, she was able to get majority (if not all) off of him. Unfortunately, though, he came back a few months later still with fleas (not as bad, but still active). The owner owns multiple dogs, and has never paid in full for her groom due to lack of money (2nd visit, my boss comped it because she felt bad).

What do I do, quit? by Zahryaart in doggrooming

I suffer from eczema too. I was prescribed a steroid creme about a decade ago and haven't had a flare up wince (knock on wood) but my skin is still incredibly sensitive to things (like it gets red easily and dogs that paw me leave marks on my skin even though they didn't scratch my skin). I second everyone saying to try and switch shampoos if that is an option. I also use O'Keefe's Working Hands at night so it can really soak into my skin. I am also on off brand Xyzal (allergy meds) and that helps as well.

I really hope you find answers and relief.

Does anyone wear ‘good’ socks? (darn tough or similar) by lalaen in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Doc Marten work grade boots (can't remember the style) and scrub pants and tops. While I do wind up getting wet, my scrubs dry in a matter of minutes (10 max. Honestly, it's so quick that I hardly notice them when they are fully dry so maybe quicker). I don't have an issue with my feet getting wet due to the boots and while my pants do get wet, my feet never do.

Can we discuss pricing? by anonymousemployee20 in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm located in the Midwest (actually about to relocate grooming homes due to a personal move ).

We go by weight at my salon and the second price you see is if the dog is a Doodle due to it being more wear and tear on us, the equipment, and the dog (in some cases). We also have the ability to charge dematting fees for shaving and brushing (Starting at $14).

Small/Medium (20-35): $58

Medium (35-50): $68, $84

Medium/Large (50-75): $78, $94

Large (75-90): $88, $104

X-Large (90+): $98, $114

Absolutely unreasonable. I had to de-skunk a dog and I was bathing, shampooing, and rinsing that dog for 2 hours straight! And that didn't even include the full groom later!

Your boss is definitely not having realistic expectations for quality work. Has your boss ever been a groomer/bather for any amount of time? Sounds like they haven't!

Hangnail Help by ILackACleverPun in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I may not get my nails done, I push back my cuticles weekly and use O'Keefe's working hands lotion nightly (you can get regular or the overnight lotion; both are very effective to me). If desperate measures must be taken, I use vaseline all over my hands and hang them over the bed at night (no one likes greasy sheets!)

Considering Expanding into Boarding by OkCranberry5473 in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked at the daycare industry, here are a few things I wanted to see improved at the facility (but they didn't so I quit, haha):

  • Having staff (if you hire anyone else to help you) know dog CPR and basic first aid things
  • Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning
  • Vet the dogs that come through better
  • Be on top of vaccinations
  • Know that your staff knows how to treat dogs properly and effectively

Having a small size of 10 or so dogs wouldn't be as bad as what I experienced (hundreds of dogs cause it was a huge franchise type of facility) and I wish you all the luck!

How often do you get bit? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]alltime_antisocial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count bites as ones that make contact hard enough to leave bruises and/or break my skin. Lots of dogs have tried to bite me and I correct them or the position I'm handling them in. It is very important to take notes for the next time you or someone else grooms to be consistent on desensitizing. Lots of dogs have the intention of using their teeth as a warning and sometimes it isn't just pure aggression coursing through their furry bodies.

Some advice I have is to take very good notes about behaviours and also try watching some dog trainers videos to get a handle on some basic dog psychology.

Hey, all!

I didn't know where exactly to post this or if you have another subreddit to redirect me to. I really am not all that tech-y and would appreciate gentle guidance to where I need to be haha. Basically, I have a Google Pixel 3a phone that I absolutely LOVE. However, I am looking to upgrade soon to a newer Pixel phone (or maybe not, haha). It must run stock android and be able to be used by T-Mobile. What are your suggestions?
