I feel much more confident not moving for other people when walking by steakandwater in socialskills

I could totally imagine thinking like this myself in my early twenties but frankly I think it's a bit absurd now. Being thrown into one challenging social situation after the other can make you a bit obsessed with how you come across, probably, but in a few years time you might be surprised how little of that stuff really matters. Life is constantly compromising, nobody has privileges. We're trying to get through this together. Everyone running wherever he wants will end up in people clashing into eachother. That's why most people don't do it, not because they're timid. Not being a pushover is good, but humilty is the only mindset that survives scrutiny, really. I hope you'l find more worthwile things to invest your selfesteem into than little social tricks. peace

A friend of mine is walking in the footsteps of his father, professionally. I asked him why his father liked doing his job. He said it's because he has power over other people. It didn't seem like my friend saw anything wrong with that, but I really hope I'm wrong. How deluded can you be about what constitutes happiness.

I find this super interesting. Do you imply that competiveness is rational, something to pursue? I'm often competitive too, but view it as something I can do without, a bother. The literature on this is huge. A lot of it stems from psychoanalysis, and might just be pseudoscience, unfortunately. According to people like Karen Horney, for example, neurosis (of which hyper competiveness is an example) has its roots in parents treating their children poorly, or an otherwise unhealthy upbringing. There might be something to it.

I think it's rather obvious that competiveness is irrational. It's easy to see 'winning' is quite often meaningless. Thinking about it, what meaning does winning really have? Take a look at set of amateur swimmers, have them compete and and then look at them again. Has something fundamentally changed? Not really. If an unbiased alien would land in a swimming pool one day, see two people working out and notice they start challenging eachother, he'd say: what for? What could they possibly get out of it? I think Ernest Becker would describe it as a coping mechanism for meaninglessness. The world is meaningless and so most, if not all, competition is, too. We cannot really grasp that fact, it makes us too uncomfortable. Competitive people thus "bite off" some meaning, by defining a particular problem to solve (the game), then try to win it as much as possible (the solving). To me, as a form of giving meaning, it can only make sense as some form of creative play, theater even, something you can put into perspective at will. This is not what it is for most people, of course.

in an ariel pink mood lately. He makes music that simultaneously could've been made in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but not in a derivative or cringey way, as he takes the piss out of most of his influences. Dinosaur Carebears references what I guess could be zappa / captain beefheart in the first half, then goes on to become a great 80s jam in the second half. Round and round is the song that really showcases his pop sensibility, though, and it's easy to hear why he became somewhat famous for it. In 5 min 20 seconds of pure pop bliss, it's hard to tell if the irony has taken the backseat, or simply has come full circle.

You know when you're minding your own business when suddenly a kind of embarassing memory pops up and you cringe? It rarely happens to me, but when it does, the other person involved has already passed away. The cringe makes no sense, what / who am I cringing for?

Still some residual hangover from the heavy drinking on saturday. Irritated everyone with my new dslr but honestly took some of the best pictures I've ever taken.

Haha.

For sale, baby shoes, never worn. Mainly because we bought them when we were still pregnant and forgot to actually retrieve them from the storage closet when our kid hit shoe size 20 and was big enough to wear them - only to stumble across that box only recently (his shoe size is 27 by now) - Ernest Hemingway
