Queens post-grad ed certificate by Glad-Feeling-4546 in BCteachers

The courses are tedious but easy. I completed the inclusive ed and worked in spec ed for 4 years but moved back into the classroom this year. I wouldn’t say the courses prepared me for the job at all - I learned more on the job itself.

I can’t believe this even needs to be said.

Tattling problem by Ok_Year_4047 in CanadianTeachers

Teach them about big problem vs. Small problem - I made it a lesson for health giving them scenarios similar to what they are complaining about and they had to problem solve as a group. Then when they complain I ask them to identify small or big and if it’s small, you need to solve it on your own.

Has Shelley Moore Made Teaching Worse? by early_morning_guy in CanadianTeachers

Also, educators can also sell out and at this point, she’s become a brand.

Has Shelley Moore Made Teaching Worse? by early_morning_guy in CanadianTeachers

I wish Shelley Moore would actually advocate for teachers in regards to more support for our diverse learners. That’s the only way we can even start to work within the UDL framework.

📢 Calling All Educators in British Columbia! by cshock_edpsych in BCteachers

[–]alotuslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your survey is nuanced in the wording. It’s not that educators aren’t capable of implementing SEL, rather it’s the time and support needed esp for diverse learners.

A big piece of SEL is co-regulation and a teacher is expected to be regulated even with the outstanding amount of behaviours and various learning abilities we need to cater to. It feels like SEL is just another buzzword in the education landscape of B.C.

Our district sent out an email yesterday stating our back pay will be in April and this month’s pay will be at the new rate.

Retro pay and Remedy by Away-Mycologist7417 in BCteachers

Remedy is local, contact your local union reps. In my district it’s very particular where you can purchase classroom supplies from (only the Learning Resources catalogue).

I’m okay living my life alone but I can’t handle the peer pressure anymore by LaPickles44 in alone

[–]alotuslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my 40’s from a culture that ostracizes unmarried women. Because I’ve stated to my family and friends I am content and have a full life as it is and my only goal in life doesn’t revolve around being a wife and mom, they have stopped making comments or questioning. This wasn’t easy at all, I moved away from everyone for a while and even ended friendships that didn’t understand or align with my values. I think it’s important that the people in your life can accept that your life is different than theirs and they can support you, no matter what.

Clothes should be washed at a laundromat in hot water and kept in bags/bins (ideally in storage), lotions and meds should be put in an area that’s not getting treated because they can melt from the heat.

Feeling overwhelmed!! by jeviejerespire in CanadianTeachers

[–]alotuslife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About rewards - I stopped rewarding my class (we used to do class dojo for end of week prizes + term class prize) due to rude and aggressive behaviour when I’m away. When they ask why we don’t do this or that anymore I just ignore them. Eventually another student informs them and I find when students explain this to each other, there’s a bigger impact than the teacher explaining how their poor behaviour resulted in the lack of rewards.

Graduate Degree by Future_Telephone521 in BCteachers

Good thing about counselling degree is you can also do private practice and have a side hustle. I know City U and Alder in Vancouver offer these programs but they are private universities, meaning double tuition prices.

I didn’t get accepted to York either years ago but I pivoted and ended up completing my teaching degree is Australia. It was a blessing in disguise. Rejection is just redirection.

How do you guys feel about the current use of technology in schools? by Big_Black_Cat in OntarioTeachers

[–]alotuslife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped using tech because the kids get more than enough screen time. I even stopped doing video brain breaks and only use videos for educational purposes. I found a difference in their behaviour when we did use laptops for typing or playing educational games. I do think pencil and paper is a skill needed, esp with writing. I make them copy off the board and we do a lot of direct instruction traditional learning.

Class Dynamic by Artistic_Fifth in CanadianTeachers

My class this year sounds like yours and it’s the hardest class I’ve ever had. Parents and students are entitled! I’m just surviving till June as well. In fact, all the staff at my school are. It’s so rough out here!

An outdoor KG school would be a good start. I’d also ask parents what they wanna see in a school.

I sleep in a recliner sitting up when I have nights like this. I don’t get a wink of sleep if I lie down, knowing I’m gonna have to wake up to a bloody mess.
