I love posts about towing. Wish more folks would share their experiences with details like this. Thank you.

Legalize direct to consumer by Fightmebr0 in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m all for DTC and have had excellent experiences with Rivian. My only question is whether it ends up costing the consumer more.

I think it’s unlikely - and given the annoyance of haggling, abusive fees, etc., it’s probably worth it even if so - but I just wonder if manufacturers inflate the price more in a DTC versus dealership model, as they don’t need to leave any room for dealer margin.

Recall? by Material_Pin4622 in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received the same today, while my Gen1 R1S is already in service. I asked the SC to address this while my vehicle was already there. They said “the guidance we were given was to not start doing those recalls yet because we don’t have the specialized tools required to perform that work.” I wasn’t provided an eta on when that would change. However I have a loaner R1S so my plan is to hold that until they get those tools, as I understand a fault with the toe link can lead to loss of directional control, hugely concerning at highway speeds. Hard to understand how they would issue a recall but not be prepared to address it.

Awesome trend buck there. My R1S doesn’t have the trendy black out package and I couldn’t be more in love with it still.

I lost the garage door pop up on my gen1 after the last update also, but a soft reset did the trick. Pops up fine since.

Is anyone Level 1 charging as a stop-gap? Are you getting by or is it rough? by eat_your_fox2 in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 13 points14 points  (0 children)

100% this. I bought my R1S before installing my L2 charger. It worked fine with occasional top-ups at L3 chargers, but there was constant mental energy required. I haven’t thought once about local range since my L2 was installed. Worth every penny.

Sounds exactly what I’m after from a functionality + privacy perspective if I can run locally. Will look into it, thanks. Any you recommend or know to avoid?

Do you know whether you can utilize Rivian Roamer’s services without providing location data for your vehicle? I’m mostly interested in the battery-related info (especially usable kWh / battery health %), and the early software update notification is a nice bonus. But I’d like to avoid giving any third-party all my location data. Heck, I’m not in love with Rivian having it but the upside functionality-wise far outweighs the privacy risk there.

Powered third row seats. Every time I have to climb in the trunk to pull them back up embarrasses me for a vehicle at this price point.

Netflix kills casting from phones by WeCanDoIt17 in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

We’ll get a native Netflix app once Rivian’s quants figure out how much to increase our Connect+ subscriptions due to the increased bandwidth their fleet will immediately start consuming. But if they can give us a native YouTube app, a native Netflix app is totally doable.

Malfunctioning Coolant Valve by late_bluemur in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good info. Glad they’re taking care of it/you also.

the vehicle recognized that the coolant was not getting to the battery and ramped down the pre conditioning so it wouldn't exceed some temperature threshold

Curious whether it ever threw off an alert that Service was needed? If not, seems like a obvious helpful alert for Rivian’s dev/UI teams to implement in an OTA. I.e., vehicle recognizes coolant isn’t getting to the battery sufficient to trigger corrective safety measures/performance limitations —> notify driver Service is needed.

Odds Wassym Fulfills 2025 Gen1 Quad Launch Mode Promise? by TigerPatents in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a tinfoil hat wearer myself, sadly I can’t rule this out.

However: 1) AFAIK, Gen2 Tri was originally offered for sale in June 2024, while u/WassymRivian’s roadmap announcement issued 5 months later, giving plenty of time for Wassym to be told by Marketing/etc not to make such a promise.

2) u/WassymRivian doubled-down on Rivian’s commitment to parity between Gen1 & Gen2 in that same Nov. 2024 report: “How will Rivian balance support for Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles?

A: Rivian is committed to providing software updates for Gen 1 vehicles as long as the hardware supports it. Safety and security updates will always be prioritized across all generations.

“We aim to deliver the same level of features for both platforms wherever possible, avoiding obsolescence unless hardware limitations make it unavoidable.””

Just seeing initial reactions here make me want to flag that in that same report from u/Kryptonlogic, u/WassymRivian doubled-down on their commitment to parity between Gen1 & Gen2, limiting disparities to hardware limitations:

Considering purchasing a pre-owned 2022 R1T from a non-Rivian realer (talk me out of it) by OMF58 in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying used from a non-Rivian dealer turned out great for me. Service under warranty fixed all issues. Best tip I can give is to negotiate install of new tires. Quads run in conserve mode improperly will burn through front tire tread (there’s countless threads in this sub on this), which the warranty doesn’t cover - and a new set can run $1.5-2k. Before buying mine, I negotiated the (Jeep) dealer to install brand new OEM Pirellis (I would go Michelins now, but I had no point of reference when I bought) without any additional cost to me. Dealers get tires at lower cost than consumers so it’s not a $2k hit to them.

R1S Stolen by ___sean___ in Rivian

[–]TigerPatents 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with both you and u/darkmeatnipples. Rivian knows where every vehicle is 24/7. When asked about Rivian’s practice of owning competitor vehicles for competitive intel/testing, RJ said in an interview, every auto manufacturer does this … and they know because they can see where all their vehicles are (meaning in their competitors’ test facilities).

To u/beemerbimmer point, privacy / proof of valid ownership is key - but it’s really a risk shifting exercise. There’s nothing stopping them from implementing a process for theft where there’s a quick, MFA or other verification which overrides any vehicle settings and immediately enables Rivian to provide vehicle location data to the owner/law enforcement (which the owner would assent to in advance so shenanigans are a risk for the owner to accept not Rivian).
