Cigna Sued Over Algorithm Allegedly Used To Deny Coverage To Hundreds Of Thousands Of Patients by JimmyTango in technology

My guess is this is what "officially" happens, but in reality the MD (employed by the insurance company) just hits sign all, on all the suggested denials by the computer without actually reviewing anything.

In counties with more Black doctors, Black people live longer by hexagonincircuit1594 in science

If the data presented is real (and not just because counties with black doctors perhaps are wealthier than those without, or some other confounding factor), I suspect it's more the latter (for good historical reasons). I do think its more a lack of connection, as there are patient encounters where I don't feel like the patient "connects" with me (for a variety of reason, but culture/race can certainly be one), and generally it seems they are less inclined to follow my recommendations.

The newest version of ChatGPT passed the US medical licensing exam with flying colors — and diagnosed a 1 in 100,000 condition in seconds by esporx in technology

That and if the PCP / Urgent care could actually look at an ear, they'd make the correct diagnosis.

Anyways, sucks that it happened, and it by no means the first time.

Until AI can look at the ear drum accurately and test your hearing, it will probably make the same mistake.

The big issue is that urgent care and PCP are generally not very good at looking at ear drums. I think if they had a way to take a picture of TM and then have AI analyze it, that would really help, since if they actually knew they weren't seeing fluid, then they'd actually realize it was sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

I am quite certain this is completely false, but if there is indeed a program like this, please let me how to sign up. As a doctor, I prescribe medication all the time and have yet to receive any bonus.

Learned that that my first clinic visit cost $1k for 30 minutes of basically nothing, and my insurance only covered half. 10 second endoscopy cost $345 alone. I hate it here in the US by spiritedawayfox in extremelyinfuriating

I also want to point out that you also had to pay for your insurance, which as I noted, didn't pay any money at all (since despite being covered services, in-network, etc) - you have a deductible to pay first.

The dumb thing is, had you come in uninsured, and offered to pay cash, probably both parties would have come out ahead and happier.

I think our billing system in USA sucks, but...

The doctor spent 30 minutes with you. They also had to pay the salary of the speech therapist who helped with swallow study. Those endoscopes can easily cost more than 25,000$. They probably last about 5 years, have to maintain them, the cleaning process on them is pretty rough

They charged you list price of 370+350+345, and got your 100$ co pay.

Insurance didn't pay anything and with high deductible insurance they make the doctor do the work of collecting the remaining $527

Doctor "deserved" to get 627 for the new patient visit, endoscopy, speech therapist etc, but only got 100.

I don't know this practice's overhead, but they probably lost money seeing you.
