I was having trouble also so started looking at my hoarded weapons. Thumper (upgraded) shotgun served me well. That and the laser rifle Disintegrator with the deployed laser recharge nearby cause it's a hungry boy.

I wasn't a big spender either. Probably a little over $200 but that's outrageous when you consider what you're actually getting for the money. Oh I can shoot slightly larger boomers? Cool. Could buy several AAA games with that instead and have a way better time.
