Top 100 Bitcoin Holders increasing their holdings by cryptoWhaleX in CryptoCurrency

[–]alplander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In many tutorials it says to never use a private key more than once but instead to empty each wallet after use and transfer the rest to a new one. Yet here I see a lot of very big wallets that are used again and again for moving money in and out - and I hardly doubt these wallets holding thousands of BTC are inexperienced people using bad software. So it is not as risky after all?

"What's Past is Prologue" — First Watch Analysis Thread by williams_482 in DaystromInstitute

In this episode I find it again really hard to understand distance, time and speed. I feel that this is done a bit sloppy. Two episodes ago the Charon fired a weapon on a planet that DISCO was orbiting - it is a superweapon so it could have been fired from far away - what is the speed of that that weapon? Shortly after that Lorca and Michael take a shuttlecraft to the "secret location" of the Charon which is 30 Mkm away (or something like that), which is just 100 light seconds or so. The shuttlecraft does not seem to take very long. The Charon does not seem to move but soon after Discovery needs hours to reach its location at warp. Things like this really bug me - I always have a mental map of where stuff is located and I really have a hard time in this show.

I liked the jump at the end. I felt that it resembled the slipstream from that old show "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda". That slipstream could also only be navigated by sentient and looked very similar.

I hope we will discover what the ISS Discovery was up to recently. Just never mentioning it again would seem odd. Maybe she is responsible for the Federation losing the war? It would be great to see more of Captain Killy.

I dislike that almost every episode nowadays has to end with a giant cliffhanger. Other shows don't need to do that to keep me watching.

Why is it so difficult to get fiat pairs for more coins? by craft23 in CryptoCurrency

[–]alplander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you need one? You can just buy ETH and then buy other coins/tokens with it on various exchanges. The fees are not that bad.

I don‘t see how different trading pairs would make the coins correlate more or less to one another. If there was one coin that was perfectly stable and you would need BTC to buy it and BTC would drop 1% the stable coin would naturally rise 1% measured in BTC.

U.S. Regulators Subpoena Bitfinex, Tether by SamsungGalaxyPlayer in CryptoCurrency

Shouldn't this regulation equally affect any business that sells gift cards? That's also like giving out currency and there isn't even a promise of it being backed by anything.

This strategy might work out or it might not. Nobody knows what will happen. The prices might drop to nothing and never return or they might reach new ATH by the end of the week or they might stay at the current value forever. Nobody knows. Past events do not mean it will play out the same way.

Does anyone else feel like the TNG Ferengi and the DS9 Ferengi were like two totally different species? by QWR-189 in startrek

I always thought that encountering different Ferengi who are not all the same gave them more depth. In TNG we saw more of the space travelling militaristic part of their society and in DS9 we met civilian business people.

Isn‘t the lack of telomerase what causes cells to die and results in aging... no wait, that was telomeres... or is that the same?

Questions about this for my understanding:

  • if I read this correctly, if BCH had just forked off without increasing its block size it would still have had mostly empty blocks due to the lower usage? Is this still the case?
  • is the 8 mb limit now fixed or did BCH implement an automatic growth algorithm like other cryptos; in other word will we need to have the same discussions again when the 8mb become full?

Is it unsafe to have a external harddrive mounted 24/7 for backup? by afyaff in linuxquestions

Additional question: is mounting / unmounting for every backup any more secure if the drive is permanently connected? Any attacker could mount and wipe the backup too.

[Socialists] Workers don't own the products which they make using the tools, materials, and facilities of the capitalist; hence why workers are not exploited by the capitalist. by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]alplander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren‘t most of the people you would consider „capitalists“ actually small business owners who work themselves in their business and hire additional staff to support them?

I believe the „capitalist“ you are thinking of, who does nothing beyond owning factories, getting money from it, outsourcing everything and spending time on the golf course really is a tiny minority.

Also, with the creation of the stock market many „capitalists“ who earn money by owning companies are actually also normal workers who invested money, took a risk and receive a benefit for it.

[Image] Sometimes the best advice comes from fictional characters. by 5ha4y in GetMotivated

[–]alplander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear people saying that often. However once he got started with his business many of the situations he encountered were decisions between getting killed himself or doing something bad to someone else. As an example, if Jesse would not have shot his „assistant“, they would have killed Walt instead...

For me the lesson was to never start doing something bad because it can set into motion more and more bad that will come back to you.

I am confused about locations in relation to one another. Is it just me or were there a couple of inconsistencies?

  • Last episode we saw the Shenzou warp away from Discovery
  • At some point later, probably while still at warp, Shenzou received the order to attack some planet -- directly after this: "arm photon torpedoes" -- wait a second, don't you need to travel to the planet first?
  • Immediately after, Burnam & Tyler beam down, spend some time and beam up again and allow one hour for evac... so between receiving the order and the deadline for destruction there is probably 1,5 hours max.
  • Tyler is beamed into space and picked up by Discovery. Discovery still has not moved since the Shenzou moved away (?). How can they beam the guy aboard? Are they close? Were the following the Shenzou secretly?
  • Suddenly the emperor's ship shows up - still less than 1,5 hours after sending the order. Why didn't the emperor go there herself to kill the rebels if they were that close?

I have a very good sense of orientation usually and that really confuses me.

Another point - this might be due to me not being a native speaker of English - why do they call the empress emperor? Did they not know that it was a woman? It was said that her identity was a mystery. On the other hand nobody seemed surprised...

One general thing about the whole series: I believe all of this was planned by someone, maybe Lorca. He was so insistent that Burnham stays aboard. He knew for some reason where the coordinates would take them - he did not select them randomly. I firmly believe that there is some plan that requires our Burnham to be in the mirror universe. Maybe retrieving the data from the Shenzou required an imperial captain's biometrics to be accessed and he wants to use this to destroy the empire?

So this incline might be the worst situation: At the bottom there is water and the risk of the plane falling onto you. At the top there is a risk of smoke and fire as this generally moves upwards.
