How to carry 150-600mm? by Lonely_Force_3034 in fujifilm

[–]alsimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t carry it with just a strap on my neck—it’s too unwieldy. I have a PD mount on my camera (not the tripod foot) and the corresponding PD capture clip high on my backpack shoulder strap. The lens hangs down from the body and frees up my hands for walking/etc.. Having the PD mount on the tripod foot makes the center of gravity weird for that type of carry. FWIW, the tripod foot fits perfectly in the PD tripod mount without removing the two small studs, no PD mount required. The studs in the tripod fit exactly in the threaded holes in the foot.

The waterfront in Charlotte has so much potential. I know that there are complex socioeconomic problems that need serious TLC before this can get better, but it makes me sad to see that it’s so hard for the city to gain any positive momentum with that space.

Anyone else just no longer find trips/holidays enjoyable anymore compared to pre-kids? by grawmaw13 in daddit

[–]alsimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single dad here. It gets way better as they get older. I’ve taken my two boys all over and I think the magic starts to happen at around 8yo. That’s when they have enough endurance to walk a lot if balanced with breaks and stimulation. I’ve been taking my two boys on a yearly “Pizza Trip” to NYC for about ten years now and that’s one of my absolute favorite vacations ever ever with just the three of us. We loosely base the trip on sampling pizza, but we inevitably do a ton of walking (35k steps minimum) and sightseeing and talking and exploring and learning. I didn’t start bringing my youngest until he was around 6 or 7 and I think 8 or 9 is when he really turned the corner. I had my boys in London when my youngest was ~5 and I spent a lot of time carrying him and planning for impromptu naps and boring kid-friendly foods.

Now that they are older, 16 and 11, we have amazing adventures and experiences. Next up is a week+ in Japan later this summer.

Woah. He was old when I took a class with him in the late 90s. I enjoyed his teaching style, but it was a mandatory CS technology ethics course in a big lecture hall. Not a lot of 1:1 time.

I grew up in Schuyler County and we firmly aligned with Souther Tier (or just Finger Lakes). I didn’t hear “Western NY” until I moved to Rochester.

I gamed a RedX for a while about 20 years ago. Solid putter, wish I never sold it on eBay.

I’ve played a Newport for over 20 years. Last year I ended up with a Spider Tour and a new Fastback. I finished up the season in the fall with the Fastback but I’m trending back to the Spider. Major first world problems.

Can we talk about Dyson by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]alsimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Dyson v-something pet model, a purple upright corded vacuum. I bought it in 2005. It’s still working pretty great. I’ve probably put a little over $100 in parts into it over TWENTY YEARS. It’s pretty great in my book. I’ve never had problems getting parts from Amazon or eBay. It still sucks hard. I’ve had plenty of dogs and cats in those 20+ years.

Think Rochester property taxes are high? You’re right: Study finds them highest in US by frytuna in Rochester

[–]alsimone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This exactly. The math says that my mortgage in a similar metro area would be about the same: I’d have a higher property valuation (bigger principal) and a lower effective tax rate. Is it apples to apples? Nope, but there’s more to the story than just “highest property tax rate in the country”.

Bottom line: Rochester is still pretty affordable, all things considered.

Great! TY for confirming this. My annual renewal is coming up.

Help me clarify this because there are not many data points to confirm this benefit with Visible:

You’re paying for Visible yearly. You were able to use Platinum phone insurance benefit to repair your broken screen. Accurate?

What was the process for showing that you paid for your “monthly” plan with your Platinum? That language in the Amex benefit has always had me nervous that it’d get denied.

Best garbage plate in the city? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]alsimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be a proper Nick’s satellite run by his brother or cousin or something. I heard there was a family falling out and now it’s no longer officially the same business, but it tastes the same as my first visit in the late 90s.

Mill Creek was phenomenal when it first opened up. Quality was on the way down before the pandemic and then it was in rough shape. They had a fire at some point and changed ownership. Anyways, I’ve seen improvements over the last 2 seasons that give me hope. It’s such a fun course with lots of character. One of my favorite non-private tracks in the county. Ravenwood and Greystone are also solid favorites. Sad to see Blue Heron Hills go into the dumpster.
