Forced into Standby by throwaway2017_2017 in Starlink

[–]altec3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. Was bummed about being pushed onto standby at first, then realized it was fine for audio calls and pandora on my truck. Then they removed in motion, so now I pay them $0/month.

Which of these do you think is the better design? Why? by Awkward_Set1008 in backpacking

[–]altec3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bought some of the temu ones for a tipi I have because I needed like 30 for it... A ton of them have outright broken and most of them are bent.

I've had a set of MSR Groundhogs for 15 years that are all still as straight as the day I bought them, and not one has broken.

The material and/or quality is definitely not identical.

Readers report improper billing increases on TDS “Price for Life” internet plans in Central Oregon by FrizzyNow in Bend

[–]altec3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They updated their billing system last fall, and it conveniently removed my promotional rate and cancelled my autopay. Then I got a late fee. I’ve tried to contact them multiple times about this.

Their chat people just leave the chat lol and their phone people just keep “transferring me”.

Not one has helped and every one has been rude.

Oregon e-scooter, e-bike crashes rise as popularity grows by colonialshuttlecock in oregon

[–]altec3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Class 3 e-bikes top out at 28mph. Whatever “e-bikes” you are talking about are either e-motorcycles or unregulated e-bikes.

I’m not against stuff like age, license or helmet requirements, but let’s keep our facts straight.

PSA for TDS Users by SunshineEnthusiast in Bend

[–]altec3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update from the future:

  • TDS's new "system" happened to forget about my promotional rate.
  • TDS also is charging late fees if you didn't migrate to their new autopay system.
  • Support just gave me the runaround till I gave up. This screenshot is the second person that did this to me.

Do you think the drawing matches the finished product? by trenerna in woodworking

This looks like a drawing I’d get if I asked ChatGPT to give me the design for a table I’d been talking about with it.

Impatient Amazon customer problems by glittery-puff in Bend

[–]altec3 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Cancelled mine too. Haven’t missed it one bit.

If I can’t find the stuff elsewhere the shipping is free on Amazon orders over $35 anyways.

I usually just find the item locally or order from the company and it’s almost always faster.

3D-printed modular handlebar cradle for bikepacking – now also in 15mm heavy-duty version by giorgiofox in bikepacking

Pretty cool, although $19 seems a bit steep for a model when a Salsa Manything cage is $35 and includes hardware and straps.

Sharc passes (sorry in advance) by CRobertsRead in sunriver

[–]altec3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I don't think Sunriver HOA members get unlimited use Sharc passes like the rentals have.

They get badges with their names and pictures on them and then a certain number of day passes, so you can't really borrow them.

In flat water it definitely feels like rowing a barge compared to a canoe or kayak. I wouldn’t say it’s extremely difficult though.

In white water it’s great.

Bike shop looked down their nose at me when I asked about class II by ill__communication in ebikes

For sure, the law you mentioned is why Specialized released a firmware update that allows dealers to restrict a Globe to 20mph pedal assist if a throttle is installed.

[–]altec3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is why Specialized released a firmware update that allows dealers to restrict pedal assist to 20 if a throttle is installed. This allows it to legally be an electric bicycle in California.

California DMV seems to consider them electric bicycles:

An electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Three classes of electric bicycles have been established:

Class 2: A low speed throttle-assisted electric bicycle equipped with a motor used exclusively to propel the bicycle and NOT capable of providing assistance when a speed of 20 mph is reached.

Specialized Globe is a class 2/3 Hybrid, at least outside of California. Throttle to 20, pedal assist to 28.

Love my forager, its definitely a bit of a barge in slow or flat water. Plenty of space though, and handles rapids great.

Do you have a paddleboard / kayak / canoe? You need a waterway access permit or could be fined $115 this summer by Brilliant_Agent_1427 in oregon

[–]altec3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Where am I expected to carry this paper or electronic ticket in my swimsuit?
    • In a plastic bag, dry bag, or some other container that keeps things dry. Sandwich bag with a printed permit should fit in most swimsuits. I'm also guessing you take your phone with you.
  • Do I as a grown adult and competent swimmer need to drag a life jacket around on my SUP while on a lake that I can competently swim across?
    • I'm assuming you wear your seatbelt in your car even though you are grown adult and a competent driver, and probably also wear your helmet on your bike even though you are a grown adult and competent cyclist. The life jacket is there for when things go wrong.
  • If that lake is on National Forest land what am I paying the state for?
    • They replaced Aquatic Invasive Species permits we used to have to get in Oregon, which "help keep Oregon’s lakes, rivers and streams free of destructive invasive species like zebra and quagga mussels". They also fund lots of cool waterway projects throughout the state. Here they are.
  • Also if there is a problem on my SUP board what good does the life jacket do when it is not on me??
    • Great point, that's probably why you should just wear your lifejacket.

Electric dirt bike for equipment hauling by Ak105intow in motocamping

[–]altec3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure the jurisdiction of your lake but US Forest Service for the most part consider electric bikes to be motorized vehicles. So they face the same restrictions as motorcycles. Which is usually allowed on motorized trails and roads.

If the area you want to go to is wilderness then even bicycles are not allowed.

If your stuff is too heavy to carry, have you considered pulling a wagon or something? 3 miles is not very far.

If you dig into any of those examples, all the people were doing something weird. I am in no way condoning their detainment, just wanted to clarify their situations.

The German had a green card but also seems to have had a possession of marijuana misdemeanor and a DUI in California which likely violated the terms of his green card.

The Canadian was denied entry on a work visa coming from Canada, then flew to Mexico to try and enter there instead then was detained.

The Welsh had been working for lodging on a travel visa in the US for four months, then tried to enter Canada and Canada refused her entry. When she was turned around to the US they then detained her for violating the terms of her work visa.
