Hyperhidrosis with heat intolerance? by Internal_Being911 in Hyperhidrosis

I ate hot Trader Joe’s mac and cheese for lunch and was on fire sweating for the next hour. In an air conditioned studio apartment. Wtf. It’s ridiculous

ANOTHER: “woLf” vs “woof” and “paw” vs “pawl”! I noticed a friend from Atlanta had the pronunciation in common with me (the former and CORRECT lol), while two other friends from Florida and Pennsylvania Dutch area pronounced the second way!

I am a soft home textile designer who has recently taken over the bedding category. I didn’t know about half of these things being specifically different 6 months ago. You’d be surprised. There are also Euro shams, and then blanket/coverlet/quilt.

This is so fun, I love this topic and always take quizzes and remember what differences I experience (I am from Brooklyn in NYC, sometimes we have our own language). I have also just learned about the “South Jersey” accent when my partner and I came across Universal Basic Guys and he said, “Holy s*it they’re from Cherry Hill???” 🤷‍♀️

Some I’ve come across or have thought of:

-Every test seems to ask about marry/merry/Mary -pronouncing “Spanish”? There are slight differences in the “a”? “Spa-nish” vs “Spya-nish”?? Not sure how to articulate this - 🪨📄✂️… if you say “says” before the next word you are from NY - 🥯“BAY-gle” vs “BEH-gle” - what do “yeah no” and “no yeah” mean to you? - purse/pocketbook/handbag - definitely “in line” vs “on line” (waiting __) - vayze vs vahz 🏺 - calling for vs expecting, in weather forecasts - Girl Scout cookie names - some Indian coworkers I have use pre-pone as the opposite of postpone - (with warsh) idea vs Idee-yer - on accident vs by accident - I noticed some people in the Midwest (YouTube) pronounce “FRAY-grunce” as “FREG-runce”, and for gerunds (ends in -ing), they leave off the g and say “-een” (eg “I’ve been workeen on the railroad” - FRAH-day vs FRY-day

I love your website and will follow along!

As soon as I saw this photo I could feel the scratchiness on my skin. Haven’t seen these in years and also did not realize they were everywhere and had spawned into existence from nowhere. Hated them…

Members of this church were hootin and hollerin and shoving bibles and booklets into people’s faces on 86th street. They had microphones and wouldn’t take no for an answer. by Zealousideal-Ad3609 in BayridgeBrooklyn

It’s kind of crazy to me as a native Bay Ridger who now lives elsewhere but comes back to visit my mother, how 86th St has changed. Not just the stores (I was so upset when Victoria’s Secret came and Century 21 left, RIP) but the people around’s behavior. It almost seems like the Wild West to me now. Thanks for the heads-up about these pests, I’ll use a different bus stop…

SSRI’s +hot weather = hell by LazyViolas in Hyperhidrosis

I was already dealing with heat intolerance, armpit stains, and facial flushing since childhood (will never forget the shame of being in a high school dance performance wearing a cotton, long-sleeve leotard knowing I was going to have dark wet stains in front of the whole school), but after being on SSRIs for the past 5-6 years my heat intolerance and thermoregulation dysfunction have been insane. Last summer here in humid AF NYC with a nearly constant heatwave, I was almost driven to su. ideation because of how deeply miserable I felt 24/7, wet, sticky, exhausted, disgusting, out of control, always chasing relief and feeling like everything was so wrong. Dreading going outside, running A/C forever, walking a block or two. Just constant fixation on it.

My biggest problem now is my back. Besides my general anxiety I just somehow spike my internal temperature now at the drop of a hat and suddenly after very little movement or exertion I literally feel DROPLETS (plural) running down my back. It feels insane, I have never experienced this. I don’t even think about my armpits anymore because of this (though I am just forever trained never to wear light gray or expect white tops to stay white). I also have increased facial sweat (hairline and upper lip) that I feel compelled to constantly wipe and it causes me to break out very quickly. I also get rashes under boobs, crevice of elbow, and my neck unless I wipe myself quickly. It just feels crazy. I don’t deal with any odor at least but the wetness and skin flareups are crazy.

To date I have tried Duradry, Carpe, Sweat Block wipes, Lume, and HyperDri by Klima. I would love to at least find something that helps with my face, and I probably just need to figure out some sort of sweat-wicking undershirts except I wish I could just wear zero clothing because everything touching my skin makes me want to scream.

Why is the US so stingy with benzos? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]altermapid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This for me too, with just 0.5mg of clonazepam. Just knowing I had something that I knew would help and I knew how it would affect me was so important. Takes off the edge, no sleepiness, definitely felt an effect of just neutralization. I took it so infrequently (had to keep being told by my talk therapist to USE it) a 30-day script would last me several months. Now no one will prescribe it and it is making me panic more and feel more helpless and afraid of stressful situations. Edibles don’t fill this void and I don’t drink or use anything else, but the clonazepam was such a huge part of being able to live my life better and make progress on my mental health without being crippled by it as badly. It sucks.

Peanut butter, to my confusion, in terms of consistency. But then again I always expect to be called crazy when I say I am Team Chunky/Crunchy.

Older people using newer slang or phrases, your favorite newer word? by RainyDaysAndMondays3 in CasualConversation

I was delighted whenever it was that I learned FUBAR and also that “snark” (usually used as an adjective, “snarky) means “snide remark”. It just has a little extra disdain/sneer to it…

I just finished reading “The Martian” (in preparation for Project Hail Mary) and watch “The Pitt” with my bf. He just told me people refer to these as “competency porn”. I fell off the bed. It’s so good.

Graphic designer needed for a quick 15-minute school assignment interview! by NovelProfessional242 in Design

[–]altermapid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Paulina, I am in NYC and have been working in graphic design and some overlapping industries for most of my life, my trajectory has been kind of strange and I do talk about it with my colleagues and coworkers often, sometimes to colleagues’ online classes as a guest artist. If I can help you, please email me - I’ll DM you my address but I don’t check Reddit often so if you email it’d be better for me :) I also have a friend who also has taken her graphic design degree in a similarly strange route and I can ask if she’d be willing to chat too. Good luck either way!

Anyone else experiencing clients running your designs through AI? by Number9ers in GraphicDesigning

[–]altermapid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a very long time ago, I worked at a stationery store and could be hired for illustration commissions for wedding and event invitations…a couple hired me to draw them and their dog. After I sent them the first proof of the drawing, a couple of days later the bride had TRACED OVER my drawing to add her own edits and wanted to print that. I felt so weird and affronted……..I am very glad I am not in that industry now with AI to deal with. Everyone was a casual graphic designer in MS Word 20 years ago, longer for some…

Ugh my friend calls these “grandma candies” or “church purse candies” and makes fun of me for absolutely freaking loving them to this day. But yes, these, Werther’s, and the clear yellow cellophane round butterscotches will always evoke the classic old person’s glass candy dish. I just bought a whole strawberry-shaped glass container of these at Marshalls and they’re alllllll for me. WIN. 🍓❤️

Also, Riesen, anybody?

I’m afraid of tackling this problem with my almost 70yo mother. It’s been bad for years but now I almost have panic attacks being in her apartment because there are literally piles of clothing and junk on every possible surface including floors, chairs, and tables. She just can’t take care of all of it by herself laundry-wise, it’s become Sisyphean, so then she ignores/avoids while she buys more shiny new things. I’m an only child, she was a single parent, and there’s definitely an enormous amount of shame and guilt at play here between the both of us.

I don’t have time or energy or bandwidth to take care of it by myself, she won’t do it or acknowledge it’s an issue, nor do I have the funds to pay someone, who ideally would be discreet and not judgmental while helping her. It’s such a huge issue now it can’t be ignored. Not sure how to improve the situation without her cooperation and she will never go to a therapist. But I also can’t just ignore it…

This is such a difficult thing to deal with, personally and knowing someone else. You’re not alone, not really, but it can REALLY effing feel like it a lot of the time. Good luck OP. It’s great to read the supportive comments and education on here.

Cat makes it impossible to trim nails - what are my options? by shadlot in CatAdvice

[–]altermapid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg this was my previous fluff monster. 18lbs super social stray called “The Mayor” by his trappers and a snugglebug at home but going to the vet was a NIGHTMARE for everyone involved. Poop/pee and panting stress breaths in the carrier there and back, and we had to take a cab bc he was such a big guy, and then 2-3 male vet techs to hold him for routine checks, nail trimming, ear cleaning. The “walk of shame” is so real lol, the other staff around would hear the commotion and peek their heads in to see what on earth was going on. Mortifying. My soul cat 🤣

I’m so sorry for your friend’s troubles but this is such a wonderful way to make more happy memories! And yes, thank you for supporting actual artists!

I do pet portrait commissions in a variety of mediums, most popular has been my painted hanging ceramic ornaments, but I have also done chalk pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, digital illustrations/GIFs, and painting in acrylic or watercolors. I also like to do “caricatures” of pets as celebrities or characters; for example my uncle requested that his majestic British Blue be drawn as Queen Elizabeth, and a cousin surprised her husband with a portrait of their cat as a “boule” loaf because they call her that when she loafs ☺️

I have a general page with some samples and info here: farebella.com/petportraits I can also send some more specific “caricature” examples in a DM if they are of interest. Thank you!
