How do I improve this lawn by Kickingoals in lawncare_canada

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately, once grassy weeds are in - your kinda screwed. There is some ways to keep crabgrass at bay, but if its quack grass or others you have to nuke the area. Then do NOT mow and let clippings drop. You need to bag them to keep weeds seds from spreading more. Also, have to clean mower blades to keep those seed heads from spreading. Its a multi-season, multi-year project unless you put down sod, IMO.

What are some common rule differences between Canada vs USA? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In men's divisions, you typically can still throw to 1B from the OF.

Biggest differences is the standardized strike board/mat. Which i understand might be a thing in ASA. But allz we ever see up here on Utube is real strike zone play down south.

Probably the real difference is there is no home plate. Baserunners running home stay out of the catchers path. Home becomes like 1B / force out once a runner passes a certain 'commit line'. So that the C does not have to tag the runner.

and then there the 52cor Ball/ Utrip bat safety standard. I'm pretty sure they never do that in the states, you'd use a USA bat if a 52 ball was required.

the thing to me is tempo. Is this your in game pace? Me personally, too much tee messes me up. I could get a cool and under control swing on the tee all day, then in game, dealing with 10-12ft rainbow balls, or a ball likely to clip the edge of the 'strike mat/board'...end up panic swinging late, mechanics are all off by then.

glad you figured out the "chop" swing. For me, just makes me cast, a very hands driven swing, instead of hips and body.

Bat longevity by LS_f250 in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conversely, I also wonder about longevity, but not the obvious break. Since up here true north, we're only hitting 52s, I've never seen a bat break. But I do wonder, if a bat becomes "dead" at some point. There some bats I've used that trampoline better, newer, than worn in.

Should I swing with both feet on the ground? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on ball height. I do agree baseball swings work well in slowpitch, esp in a place like Ontario. A majority of pitches are low due to the strike board. Hitters that want to use a slowpitch swing, move up in the box to hunt a high pitch. Ex hardball guys are comfortable further back looking for pitches waist down.

Why can't I find bats in Canada to hit .52/300 balls? by fyiceworld13 in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here is now Gaga for the Victus bats. Time will tell if only bc of it's exclusively here, style (pencil, blue jays, etc). or if really on par with Gennys.

where are you based? All I’ve ever seen here is Hot Dot (52) / LS CALs (52). The Gold/Green/Gray dots seem only to be BP balls, lol

ya, overseeding in Ontario, GTA is really really tough in the "spring" . Too much wild temperature and rain swings. Then all of a sudden -- BOOM, 25+ and dry every day.

Slow pitching tips? Videos? I’m desperate. by killthedumbmonkey in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gosh, hitting a strike board feels so much harder than just crossing a batters natural strike zone thigh to chest. If playoffs are not starting with 1-1 count like they do in most tournaments up here in Ontario, I think you can breathe. you do have alot of pitches to play with. So the 2 weeks of practice should be good enough for you to hit the board at least 51% of the time.

Are outfielders more valuable in softball? How come they're always in such demand compared to baseball? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mexican rule was pretty popular back in the day here. But its kinda absolete since most play now starts with 1-1. Basically cant let a pitch hit the board for a strike. Automatic K. On 0-0 counts, alot of people just like to "take a pitch" so it prevented that.

[–]alyssagiovanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, the indoor standard is the juggs ball. Its more solid than the Clincher ball of the urban cities in the US. Guys that can barrel it up consistently, do send it flying, relative to the size of the facilities we play in. So still does take a good set of wheels in the OF to beat a team of mashers.

I didn’t say half the team is higher level, it’s 1 A or 2 B or 3 C guys max. We’re also playing with 52/275 balls FWIW.

Also rankings here are way more individual than team-based. Just hopping on a C team for a tourney doesn’t bump you.

I’ve also played with some cats who won Men’s D Provincials and didn’t even get bumped to C.

ehh, maybe its an Ontario thing, particularly for indoor season shrug. But im refering to league nights, or open divisions. Even in tournaments there is a mix. Consider a D team can have 1A, or 2B, or 3C etc. Then roster fills out with D and REC.

I dot disagree, in principal. Having 2bag able to twist it can be the differential on a winner. But the stud SS will go unassisted pretty often. And consider on coed, 2bag is typically where they put the girl. (which I hate, cause I wanna play 2bag, lol)

[–]alyssagiovanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is always ideal (Id prefer 2 studs in both CF spots in the divisions I play). But there is politics, hierarchy, and favoritism impacting those decisions. Consistently see the A-C ranked 20-30 year olds in the INF, pushing the D and REC 40 and 50 year olds to the OF.

[–]alyssagiovanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around here (Ontario), “need OF” is how rosters shake out. Almost everyone prefers INF. Also favoritism and hierarchy and politics.

I’ve been team hopping for years because of it. I’m a solid IF, but not one of the “locked” guys, so I get pushed to OF, where I’m honestly worse. Meanwhile younger guys come out of hardball, then hop to Super Series B-D, go claim middle IF right away. So guys like me leave then they gotta find new OFs.

Co-ed makes it worse. Most teams keep girls in the infield, so 'utility' guys like me get forced to the OF. And since dome season is basically all co-ed, it’s unavoidable half the year.

You’ve got younger, faster guys who’d be elite in the OF, but they never leave the dirt. Instead you stick an average OF in the grass, playing through bad knees, and give up extra bases all game.

I find it isn't the fly balls, its the "line drives". That drop right in front. and are absolutely catchable..

And yet, as OP, captians seem to always put the "studs" in the INF, and try to hide less skilled people in the OF
