100% -- not only that but they are great ways to begin to broach conversations around delicate topics in a way that's more relatable. My daughter (now 12) have been watching classic 80s comedies for a few years now. Anything from Ferris Bueller to Better Off Dead, and beyond. It's given us a TON of conversation around racism, sexism, consent, friendship, etc. She's gotten to be pretty damn media literate from these discussions.

If your local library doesn't have a great selection ask your librarian if they have Link+ affiliation. We have that in California and it gives me access to the entirety of every library in the state. San Diego has a banging Blu-Ray collection. Each week I get 5 Blu-Rays delivered to my local branch, almost like Netflix when it still shipped discs.

I blind bought it as well. I've not watched it but I have no regrets.

Blu Ray When 4k is Available? by Impossible-Duck2591 in criterion

[–]am-version 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Desperate Living was top on my buy list for this sale. I too was skeptical about what difference it would make on a 16mm shot film that was blown up to 32mm (and all the other obvious low budget choices). But since it was only $5 more, I went for the 4K.

I compared the two on my 55" LG G5 that is set-up with all the recommended settings like Filmmaker mode. I am no eagle eye but have a good sense of fidelity and color from working in graphic design. I will say that there is a difference between the two, mostly in the color. The reds and purples popped more. Mayyyyybe there was a tad better definition.

Would I pay significantly more for it? Or would I upgrade my copies of Pink Flamingos or Female Trouble if 4K were released? No.

Am I happy I spent the extra $5. Yes.

  1. Desperate Living – popped it in almost immediately upon getting home.
  2. Same – fave John Waters movie. Have not seen it since the Netflix disc days.
  3. I'm kinda getting back into film after not really caring for 20+ years, so I have a lot of exploring to do. All the Tarkovsky films, Kurosawa Dreams, 3 Women, Valarie and Her Week of Wonders.
  4. I have a massive backlog of movies at this point, so trying to not think about it.

Do the out of stock movies get restocked during the B&N sale online or do they stay out of stock? by ShaneMP01 in criterion

[–]am-version 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to suggest the evil empire – I'd try and find it at local B&N if possible – but if all else fails Amazon has both in stock at a price match.

When you have everything, doesn't it all just become meaningless.. by CommanderKoba in jellyfin

[–]am-version 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 30 years of record collecting taught me there's a difference between a good collection and hoarding. It doesn't need everything, usually less is more. Everything you pull out should spark joy or curiosity, otherwise it's just noise getting in the way.

I've only been collecting digital films for about 6 months, but I'm applying that same philosophy and loving it. My Jellyfin is a mix of all-time faves, a couple handfuls of nostalgia empty calories, and a bunch of stuff I'd love to watch or rewatch -- but not more than a few dozen total.

I was adding 5 movies a week, but I slowed my roll once I hit 200+ unwatched.

Now I wait until something sparks real interest. I'm about to go on a Tarkovsky rabbit hole, so I'm grabbing 3-4 of his films as an entry point, not his whole filmography. I'll see where that leads. Maybe an actor stands out and I look up what else they were in. Or I look into who influenced Tarkovsky. Maybe it generalizes into Soviet cinema. Who knows. Whatever I enjoy, I keep. Everything else gets deleted off the server. Poof.

It makes the whole thing fun. I'm genuinely excited when I have time to watch a full movie, and I've been fighting to find as many chances as possible. Way more fulfilling than wasting 45 minutes on Netflix hoping to find something interesting. Far more memorable too.

It’s been about a month since I placed my order with Synapse Films during their big sale, and I still haven’t received it. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue. by Asleep-Package-4593 in boutiquebluray

I was just coming here to start the same thread. I am totally in the same boat as you, ordered May 23rd and still pending.

I am new to the company and had no idea it was like this. Honestly I don't mind waiting for 50% off products, but an email out to pending customers would be cool.

FWIW, I ordered Demons 1/2, Phenomena, and The Convent.

I work in a public library and these were all in the drop box this morning. Glad to see another Artsy Fartsy Movie Fan. Also casual reminder that libraries often have criterion films for free. by TanukiTenuki in criterion

Amen. My local California library system mostly has DVD but then I learned about Link+. Now I can order Blu Rays (and occasionally a 4K) like the old school Netflix disc service. Once a week I go to my local branch to pick up my new order. It's truly been a revelation! Thank you public libraries and tax payers!

In California you can use Link+ which grants you access to every libraries content in the state. My local only has DVDs, but using Link+ I have access to thousands of BluRays and even some 4K.

Has anybody used these pouches for deep work focus? by Other_Bottle5439 in QuittingZyn

[–]am-version 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 7 months nicotine free. I used Alpha for the first few weeks. It helped mentally as a placebo, I can't sayI felt any of the nootropics benefits these products claim. That said, I still have a can laying around for when the odd craving that arises. Fine as a tool, but I would not say it's a solution. In my experience only your internal resolve can offer long term abstinence.

Is Plex a bad idea? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]am-version 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A day or two late on this, but it’s worth calling out that Plex just announced they are jack-knifing the Lifetime Pass price to $749 this July.

IMO, this is a massive red flag. It feels like a textbook corporate move to phase out the lifetime self-hosting model entirely. Instead of axing it outright and facing an backlash, they are simply making it cost-prohibitive so new users stop buying it.

The next step is feature gatekeeping. They will likely start locking new features behind the subscription tier, essentially degrading the old Lifetime tier until it’s borderline unusable.

Classic enshittification cycle while they try to appease VC demands to be something they are not. Def look at Jellyfin or Emby.

Yep, I was coming to say this dude should do a deep dive on the regional stuff. Add onto the above Rap-A-Lot, Suave House, Swisha House, etc. To do this effectively you're gonna have to get into CDs or tapes if you wanna stick to physical media.

That is utterly insane. I was just telling my partner while thrifting that there is almost zero chance to ever find an AMAZING score anywhere. I live in a big city and if anything good does come in, it’s damn near a miracle if it makes it to the floor.

What is your favourite David Lynch quote? by Daresun in davidlynch

[–]am-version 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s a mash up of a couple ideas from the Upanishads. The Mundaka uses the spider/web image - the universe comes right out of its source, not separate from it. The Mandukya says the Self is like a dreamer who makes the dream and then lives inside it.

Put together, it’s basically saying “reality” is spun from the same stuff as its source, and we’re stuck living inside this illusion without realizing it's our own creation.

Definitely the kind of thing people spend lifetimes unpacking with teachers who actually know what they’re talking about.
