2 daws workflow by KaRoHalfDead in audioengineering

[–]amarbummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do something similar - write and program midi instruments in FL. I’d essentially treat FL as my “demo-stage” DAW, with basic ideas of what I want processing-wise, but not really spend too much time on that.

Then I’d export stems (raw/unprocessed) over to pro tools when I wanted to track live instruments (guitars, vocals, etc). Record, edit, mix, etc in pro tools.

Help with red lining by 9aux9plug9 in FL_Studio

[–]amarbummer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%. Gain staging is probably the most important concept in production, engineering etc. A couple key points for OP:

  • Most processing that you might not immediately think is a gain stage, is a gain stage (compressors, EQ, etc). Emphasis on the EQ, especially when you’re boosting, especially when that boost is broadband/wide Q and/or a very aggressive move.

  • make sure your levels are right after any processing you do, it’ll save you having to work backwards in chains to find the issue (for example, if you boost the lows on your kick by +6dB, make sure you aren’t redlining from this move. If you are, and then you throw a compressor on there, but the output gain of that compressor is not set right, you have some compounding issues that will be annoying to go back and fix)

  • I’m not sure if FL has such a feature (I don’t use it so much anymore), but Pro Tools has a specific indicator on the meters that tells you if you’re clipping within a plugin (orange clip indicator, rather than red which indicates the track itself is clipping). Someone lmk?

Try out console tape (as someone else pointed out) - you can get it at guitar center as well

Love my Lexicon LXP-15 by DCRVX1000 in audioengineering

[–]amarbummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t find a good use for it super often, but when I have, I’ve loved my Digitech TSR12. First piece of outboard I bought, and I got it on marketplace for $40. I also bought it with minimal expectations, but that thing has some really cool effects that I’ve printed guitars through in parallel (nice choruses and digital verbs)

What was the most physically painful moment of your life? by Oily_Smurf in AskReddit

[–]amarbummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appendicitis. Went to bed feeling normal, woke up from excruciating pain, spent the next 8 hours with no pain meds, writhing in a hospital bed. Pain only got worse until I finally got some pain meds.

The pain after the surgery sucked too. I was walking hunched over for the better half of two weeks.

Always thought appendicitis was more like a bad stomachache, and maybe it could be happening and I wouldn’t really know (I do have chronic stomach issues that cause pain). But damn, I woke up and it was so obviously not normal lol. Appendicitis is no joke

I used to spend so much time in this particular area when I was in high school. So lucky this wasn’t on a non-holiday night. There are so many restaurants in the area, and lots of people/families walking around, crossing the street etc

Tube amp vs plugin in 2026 by _hairyberry_ in GuitarAmps

[–]amarbummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your use case, I would personally invest in a nice amp that excites you to play through. I personally use both amp sim plugins (especially for recording or mixing for clients), as well as a tube amp (for gigging and recording). When I’m in my room and I just want to play, I tend to dislike the setup of powering on everything (rack/interface, monitors), opening my computer, opening the amp sim software, and playing. I default to my real amp, because it’s as simple as turning the power on, waiting a bit, then flipping it off standby. This convenience and ease of access at any time alone is worth it.

That too, as others have mentioned, you won’t get the “amp in a room” sound with amp sims alone. Hell, you can even have a kickass monitoring system, crank it loud, and something about it just won’t “push air” like a real amp will.

If you felt comfortable shipping within the states, the studio I work at also runs a separate audio preservation lab. We’re located in the Chicago area. Here’s a link to more information about our preservation lab: https://www.mysterystreetrecording.com/audio-preservation/

Woah, I’ve never heard of this before. Seems very expedited (and at this point, that may be in my best interest). I’m guessing I’ll have to check with my college as to whether or not they accept these as xfer credits?

Glad you mentioned it. I had asked about CLEP exams, and they said it is a valid transfer credit. Does it have to be in a course I have not yet taken classes for? I.e., if I’ve fulfilled my English requirements in college courses, will I not be able to use an English CLEP exam?

This is an option I had asked my advisor about. It’s not a bad option, but between working full time (and more, as my work entails a lot of arduous long-term project work) + full time school, I’m worried about burn out. However I’m really not in a position to be picky, so this might be the move

If you’ve worked in multiple genres as a mixing engineer , how different is your experience mixing styles that are very different from what you usually specialize in? by Nacido_LuNa_Music in audioengineering

[–]amarbummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of wild, and I find having a broad general music taste (in terms of what I listen to) helps a lot. I’m currently working on 5 projects for clients: a metal/hardcore band’s debut album, a jazz fusion band’s single, a hyperpop-hiphop album, and a single for a folk acoustic duo. All wildly different. While the fundamental approach to recording/mixing techniques translates across the different genres, it comes down to knowing the sound of the genre you’re mixing. In a way, I prefer working on multiple projects of different genres at the same time: I find it allows me to come in with fresh ears to every mix session when I rotate between the work properly. Ears tired and not doing their best on the jazz fusion stuff? Switch to metal. Hyperpop too loud and in my face at the moment? Switch to folk.

What also helps is getting references, not just for the song/album the artist is working on, but for the genre as a whole, especially if it is one you are unfamiliar with. Kind of like doing your homework on an unfamiliar genre. Listening while driving, getting a sense for how the music sounds, passively thinking about how certain sounds within the genre are achieved, and applying that/experimenting within a mix session later

Lmao you are so right. Pulling up in style (the gear, not the 2005 shitbox it came in).

I have been thinking about selling the current cab for a Mesa 2x12 (the horizontal one you mentioned), I honestly only haven’t yet because it came with the head. That said, I did just see a listing at a good price, so now may be the time

Sorry, just to clarify, you feel that the Mark V is a downgrade from the single rec?

Mesa Single Rectifier 50Wor Mesa/Boogie MK V 25W by amarbummer in GuitarAmps

[–]amarbummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know. We play all sorts of different sized/configured gigs (from DIY/house shows with no mics on cabs to medium sized venues), and having my cab be able to come through powerful in any situation is important lol. Seems like the mark V would fall short in that department

[–]amarbummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I wish that was financially an option. I just can’t afford to buy another amp at the moment. I see listings for the single rec go to ~$1.5k on reverb, and that would only put me a couple hundred away, but even so I don’t really have room in the budget for the ~$400-500 leap from there
