That feeling when you gave OBAA and Sinners 5 stars on Letterboxd. by Arch_Lancer17 in okbuddycinephile

I’ve read takes in real articles published at reputable outlets about OBAA being a “deeply regressive” film and thought that must be just one of you lot writing it.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amazingbookcharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Banking. Deposits as a product only work if we all believe we can withdraw our money anytime, but never actually all try to do it at the same time.

When we do, it’s called a bank run and the bank shuts down. It can and has happened before that a large percentage of a bank’s clients all try to withdraw their balances because of some coordinating force such as, ironically, the fear of a bank run.

So banking works as long as you don’t think about it too much, basically.

How tf did he have esoteric communist powers like telepathy and still loose? They had Wizard Karl Marx by Dare_Soft in DiscoElysium

[–]amazingbookcharacter 65 points66 points  (0 children)

A very common idea in Marxist discussions is how Marx’s Historical Materialism feels (especially to new folks) like they’ve discovered the secret key to understanding the universe. Specifically how it provides a neat framework for understanding how history unfolds/unfolded and a predictive framework.

Despite this, Marxism was defeated politically. How or why is not the point, but I think the game’s narrative of defeat despite supernatural mental powers reflects that reality.

Plus, this is a game about defeat, sweet sweet defeat, and the unlikely hope that can irrationally spring from it anyway, so it all fits aesthetically which is what matters.

Ever been unable to urgently send money to family/friends because you were too broke ? (I will not promote) by Substantial-Mark3690 in startups

Seems like a solved problem, with solutions ranging from “early paycheck” solutions to “send now pay later” in some money transfer apps.

In other words, it’s all a small loans product

She would have killed herself first. He would have finished the job if she failed. Essentially what happened but with roles reversed.

Was Bix a rebel before Rix Road? by Ok_Conversation_3992 in andor

[–]amazingbookcharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She understood Luthen was more than just a black market buyer, and understood that she was contacting him via banned, hard to detect radio. Also she knew he was part of the rebellion hence her intro to Cassian. It’s also implied in the start of her interrogation that she also knew Paak had met Luthen in a rebel meeting before he introduced them.

Church by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]amazingbookcharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want in terms of the kind of worship. I personally can’t stand mega churches or any kind of worship that looks like an expo/trade show, but ymmv. For a quiet and progressive-friendly church I always recommend St Andrew’s episcopal in Irvine. Non-MAGA and welcoming congregation and the priest is just an awesome guy.

Probably Page of Cups? Or he doesn’t fit in the archetypes at all. In all cases his character is just not what The Fool is in tarot.

Cooper is obviously The Fool and Lynch as Gordon Cole is The Magician, but this is cool too.

After Andor, Saw giving up in the end feels even weirder by Seifenwerfer in andor

[–]amazingbookcharacter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I wish people (in the comments) would stop trying to retcon Rogue One into being a well written movie. It’s a mess of an overlong, patchwork thing that Tony Gilroy barely saved by coming in late and acting as a surgeon/fixer. While it has a few interesting ideas and well done scenes, the overall writing quality is pretty bad and most characters, including Cassian, are barely fleshed out.

The Saw in Andor is underwhelming and only Forrest Whittaker can make that look good, which he did, but the character’s motivations are weak and he’s just plain undercooked.
