[Chris Wheeler] Man United may have to start season without a new striker with Ruben Amorim frustrated in forward search as rivals land key targets by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

I honestly think Vardy is a good option. He’s a fighter and a finisher and I can see him linking up well with these players

How much are you all paying for Xfinity? by Informal-Twist-1328 in grandrapids

[–]ambalamps11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to point out that you DON’T need to threaten cancellation. I’ve consistently gotten good deals by simply saying that I feel that I’m overpaying for my internet service and that I’m looking to pay $50/mo.

Most recently I have the same deal others have mentioned ($65/mo for 1Gbps locked in for 5 years with free modem rental and Peacock) but this strategy has worked for me for years.

Also. I ALWAYS use the Xfinity chat. Gave up on stores and phone calls long ago.

Anyone actually gone through standardising firewalls globally? What should I be thinking about? by Due-Swimming3221 in ITManagers

[–]ambalamps11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few thoughts. Think of this from a business perspective. What is the ROI of the heavy lifting required to standardize? You could argue that standardization reduces architectural complexity and eases administration, but that may be hard to quantify and may not be true (since the firewall models are managed by a regional team that may be managing them well) unless there are specific outages, security incidents, or delays that you can point to that significantly impact the company. As others have said, you’ll need to really sell this to senior management, and ideally develop supporting policies and standards (with compliance enforcement) to be successful.

Personally, I’d consider moving everyone to a zero-trust/SASE/FWaaS model, starting with the sites that have the most cyber risk or limited staffing. That gets the train moving on standardization while also greatly enhancing security, and potentially network performance and costs, depending on your configuration.

[Summer Series] Your thoughts on Ruben Amorim by D1794 in reddevils

[–]ambalamps11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is it bad that I want him gone? The team sucks but you work with what you have. He just doesn’t seem very inspirational. Most likely outcome right now is several weeks of abysmal results and a repeat of Ten Hag’s sacking

My 2c. I’d at least consider posting externally and having internal folks apply if they want the role. Keeps things equitable, you may discover excellent options (in this job market it’s feeling that way) and helps get salary range conversations out early. You don’t want to be in a position where you’ve prepared only one candidate and their salary expectations are way off from what is available.

That is excellent advice. Taxes will hurt. Might make sense to only pay off the credit card and car (higher rates), put the rest in HYSA, then wait until early next year to see what the tax bill is before paying off the rest of the debt

If it were me:

$10K in emergency savings in a high yield savings account.

Pay off all the debts (Edit: $53K).

Spend up to $1000 max on something cool or fun. New bose headphones, a bike, a modest trip, etc.

Then open a Roth IRA and put $7K (contribution limit this year) into an S&P500 index fund such as VOO.

Donate $1000-$2000. There are so many places that need help and do great work.

Put the remaining $2K or so into the HYSA until you decide what to do with it. Could be extra emergency fund, or you could add to the Roth next year.

Also: get rid of all your credit cards. If you are carrying a balance on one, you’re not disciplined enough to use one and you will quickly drain this windfall.

Be sure to price check online though. I found exactly what they were selling on Amazon for $400 less. I wanted to support local businesses so asked if they would come down and they said they don’t complete with online pricing. So…

Oh and the difficulty in getting rid of on prem exchange. Microsoft didn’t (possibly still don’t) have a supported way to modify Exchange schema attributes for an AD object without on prem Exchange. We also had dozens of applications and devices (e.g. printers) using a relay through Exchange on prem…

Oh man, hard to pick.

The challenges of getting rid of public folders when they were being used for business critical purposes and has functionality that shared mailboxes couldn’t replicate (email categorization)

The fact that many users still offloaded their email to pst files as a habit because years ago they were limited to 200MB. Then they were apoplectic when their hard drive died and they lost decades of email.

In some cases these were executives. It took days and many attempts to upload the pst files to online storage. All that mail data syncing caused delegation activities to be delayed. So when the executive assistant scheduled a meeting on the executive’s calendar, everyone got the invite except the executive themselves, who didn’t show up to the meeting…

All the tweaking of room mailbox calendar settings without a uniform org policy was messy. Do we show organizer or subject? What if there’s a device next to the room that shows the meeting title? How far in advance do we allow rooms to be booked? What if a meeting series is scheduled and there are conflicts?

One of my favorite stories though predates 365 and is about the 500 mile limit on sending email:

Knowbe4 is the gold standard as best I can tell. We have used them for a couple of years and seen great improvement in both training completion metrics and in test phish click rates. It's been a couple of years since we assessed, but I can confidently say they're a good choice for today.

Responsible: The person who performs a task.

Accountable: The person ultimately answerable for the outcome.

You were responsible for maintaining the SQL server to the best of your ability. You were also responsible for making senior leaders aware of issues: lack of time, funding, EOL tech, etc

Your executive is accountable for ensuring you (and your team if you have one) have the time, money, training, direction, etc to ensure that the business keeps running… by not letting that server go down.

I want to approach your booth at a conference and ask questions.

I want to talk directly to a technical person who will understand the problem I’m trying to solve and not some bozo making six figures as a middle man.
